So I just started my self-taught tutorials on python and I'm loving it already! I feel like a fish taking to water. Awesome stuff. cool

I feel like i made the wrong career choice a decade ago. I should've majored in computer science in the university.

All the same, I think I'm gonna go on a big ride into this world of software and tech. I'm excited!
Anybody else starting out on programming? smiley

lol yes coding is cool, but note that you just started and you are in for a long ride, but if you have the zeal, patience and time, l believe it would be worth it.
lt could get frustrating at times, but it's super cool and no matter how frustrating, l personally find it more fulfilling and enjoyable than many things out there in my opinion, because coding is both art and science in one, especially the aspect of coding that involves creating new stuff.
But note, that coding and/or programming is only an aspect of computer science, not all of it.

Thanks for the heads up my man. cool

I particularly like the hands-on demand that comes with coding. I mean you have to actually do it to learn it and by repeatedly doing it you gain confidence and skills.

The creativity aspect is rewarding I suppose. I'm a deep thinker so I love the puzzles. I can't wait to master the basics so I could try building all these ideas I have, bringing them to life!

Yeah I know CS is a lot more but at the end you have to specialize in one or two areas as you can't possibly be an expert in CS as a whole right? smiley

We started about same time but I took the traditional HTML-CSS-JavaScript route. Currently building a website for my sisters oil perfume business.
What made you start with python?

Well, I learnt python was easier to start with. smiley

I'm learning JavaScript right now and it's just about everything I learnt in python but different syntaxes and names. It's so boring. I'm just zooming through it. I like the DOM part though, and also the Events part.

Did you learn any framework? Bootstrap, react, angular, vue ?

Lol bro for you to be asking me DID you learn any framework, most probably you're caught up in tutorial haven. Also for you to be saying you started python in September and now u are ZOOMING past JavaScript. Its not about learning my man, its about implementation.
To answer your question, no. I am currently with a self taught programmer who started in 2017 and is currently earning almost 400k monthly and he is the one who advised me against the whole speed learning pit most beginners tend to fall in, so I back-tracked and took it slow. I am very happy with the results.
You seem like a serious chap though. We could hook up and work on a project together in a month or so.. What do you say?

Bro the part you said you were building a website got me. Most web developers mostly use frameworks for their projects and that makes sense. That's why I asked you what frameworks you've learnt . Except maybe you're using a CMS.

Tutorial haven lol. I'm very impatient and when I'm not seeing practical application of things I learn, I get disinterested pretty fast. I had to get so strict with myself to sit down and learn python basics because many devs on reddit advised to learn the basics thoroughly . I wanted to jump to projects and applications. grin

Now I'm done with python basics and I'm working on a web app with Django framework and also a data project for a chartered accountant relative, using pandas and tabula-py libraries.

So I had looked at HTML and CSS and they were pretty straightforward and easy. I didn't want to build a static website though because I needed to add some functionalities and also make it interactive.

So I moved to JS basics and found out it is the same pattern as python (arrays are lists, objects are dictionaries, functions are the same, etc), I got bored, that's why I'm moving faster so I can get to the actual application and functionality of the language because all that matters is the ability to utilize these technologies to solve real life problems and boost your portfolio, so no tutorial haven my guy grin.

Sure why not? I've got a couple of ideas I can't wait to start working on. cool

OK man I got you loud and clear. I guess this makes sense because you already have a career -i guess?- and just learning web dev for its functionality so you can afford to skimp on the basics and get right down to the practical functionality with frameworks and such. But since my intention is to make a career of it, my friend i mentioned earlier warned me explicitly thats a mistake that might prove costly. No one interviews you on your ability to use a framework rather they test your problem solving skills, algorithm knowledge and the such. There's cases of programmers who are adept at so many frameworks but failed the popular fizzbuzz challenge, costing them the job.
The day my friend saw me pull up a bootstrap tutorial video on YouTube he simply asked me what if I get an interview with a oldfashioned company that doesn't use frameworks? What do I do in that case? Fail? Lol I quickly exited the channel and went to traversy's video for responsive websites with only CSS. Frames are relatively easy to learn. The challenge is mastering the language it relies on.
As to bolded, I think when you find out a flaw in yourself you work on it not work around it. Impatience is a flaw not a strength and from what I've know about programming so far, it's one that will affect you seriously.
Quick question, did you do the FizzBuzz challenge or any other?

I intend to make a career out of it too. I'm not actually avoiding the basics. If anything, I don't really fancy some frameworks because you don't have the flexibility to customize your projects. I've always utilized the top to bottom learning pattern.

Example, I'd like to see how a car works first(overall picture), then I'd be curious to know which components make it work that way (basics). Otherwise, learning about brakes and tyres first, wouldn't make sense to me if i can't see how they add up to the final picture. Same with programming. I wanna see what it does first, then I get down to finding out how or why it works that way. That way I'm more motivated and interested. That's the way I learn new things though.

As for my impatience; A shot of whiskey actually calms me down and gets me focused on the tasks.grin Also if I start to find something interesting, I get hooked for hours experimenting on it.

Oh yeah. I solved the fizzbuzz test at first attempt. I was surprised when I read that most seasoned programmers get it wrong. I even played around with a number guessing game using loops and conditionals. smiley

One word: BIG
For real thats dope. Most important is that you understand the hands on approach is best. So can we discuss one of your ideas you will like to commence on right now? To have a general idea the direction its gonna take and the tools necessary

I'm a humble greenhorn, ever ready to learn.

Ideas? Let's not get ahead of ourselves bro, but rather, while working hard to understand this field we are getting into, stay focused and composed, reflecting solemnly on the workings of zeros and ones, bits and bytes, and on the power and intelligence of humans, who created this behemoth that is software.

In due time, when we are past the greenhorn stage, all things being equal or better, we would get to put heads together, and share ideas which hopefully would birth a global tech heavyweight, impacting human life and humbling us the more. smiley

Hi everyone,

I've spent a long time today going through this programming section looking for help.

I want to switch careers and get started in tech. I'm unashamedly making this change because I need a good level of financial stability.

I'm a freelance writer and a mom. I started learning python because all the articles I read recommended python for beginners. I lost motivation because I don't have anyone to talk to or coach me on this journey.

I have started again from scratch. I'm using a python book to learn. I prefer the read-a-book approach. What I want is people to talk to, so I don't feel lost and stop again. I want to gain this skill and actually earn from it.

So please, can someone mentor me? Thank you guys.

Thank you for the advice. I will check out freetutorials.us. I have some videos I downloaded from YouTube. The thing is that some video tutorials throw concepts at you without starting from the basics. Books are structured, so I started using one, though I'll still check out more videos. Thank you smiley

Sure. Books start from scratch and explain the basic concepts properly. I'd say read the books, make notes, and practice on your machine. Videos are helpful too, but mostly when it comes to installations and file paths.

I learn better with books though, so I use them most of the time.

you see i faced the same problem too with youtube because most of the tutorials their are not structured that is why learning from udemy, lynda or any other mooc is better because the courses their are structured and being taught by one person or at most two instructors and with that you will get to learn the major and important concepts you need to learn and again books covers several things in which many u might not need when writing real programs i remember when i started learning javascript then i saw a hasproperty() method and several methods like that but now that i have been working on projects using react and nodejs i havent even come to any situation when i need any of those methods, learning from a good instructor will shorting the time of learning quickly because he knows what and what u will be using mostly and use teach them to you and as for books they are mainly used for reference but as for me i always make sure when am coding my laptop is connected to the internet so i google my proplems or make reference quickly to either stackoverflow or mozilla developers network no time to the read books again that one end for university

Python no hard sha. I see why most people recommend it for beginners. I learnt all the basics in 4 weeks. I'm learning JavaScript now and with my knowledge of python, it's seems really easy too.

But my guy, no be by learning these basics o. All these basics na like tools. It is what you do with the tools that matter. So right now I'm working on many python projects to hone my skills on using these tools (basics). cool
