you know the answer already.. even though Nigeria consumes more rice than Benin rep, but where those rice comes from is Benin due to Nigeria banning rice imports on rice.. so this is why Benin is the 6th largest importer of rice..

There is a similar scenario which happened in 2010.. Cote d'ivoire is the world largest importerexporter of cocoa but when their war or civil violence came up in 2010, Ghana became the largest producerexporter of cocoa. It is not that Ghana planted or harvested or produced more cocoa but ivorians smuggled their cocoa out into Ghana just to importexport it..
Nigeria never banned the importation of rice through our ports, the FG only stopped banks from giving importers of rice cheap dollars and increased the tariffs and duties paid at our ports, this was to encourage local production and employment and discourage imports.

That example of Ghana and the ivory coast doesn't hold here, look for another analogy

benefiting of protectionist theory is only temporal, if those nation decide to fight back, it will not be of interest to Nigeria. or you are not aware this countries too can fight back? Nigeria export to those countries too.

The benefit simply ends once benin and Niger republic begin to retaliate by erecting their own protectionis, in the long term, trade protectionism weakens the industry. Without competition, companies within the industry have no need to innovate. in the long run, nigeria domestic product will decline in quality. It will be lower quality and still be expensive than what foreign competitors will have produce.

If the rice was cultivated and produced in Benin and Niger, that would be a different issue but a situation where they import the rice just for it to be smuggled and dumped into Nigeria is a no no.
They make their money from tariffs and duties and we end up with nothing

Most of you don't understand things.

The FG didn't ban importation of rice, it only placed it among goods that importers won't be given subsidized dollars to import. So they must source for their dollars in the open market.

The FG increased the tariffs and duties on imported rice through our ports, this was to discourage imports and encourage local production by farmers thereby creating wealth and jobs for those into rice production.

Importers seeing that importing through neighbouring countries and smuggling into Nigeria was cheaper decided to go for that option.

Who loses or gains?
Loss

Loss of tariffs and duties to our neighbours,
Low price of imported rice discourages local farmers from expanding production,
Unemployment.

Gains

Asian rice farmers smile to the bank, they make more money and pay taxes to their home governments, more employment too,
Our neighbours make money as well because of the tariffs and duties Nigerian importers pay,

Developed countries like Switzerland and even Japan still have some form of restrictions on imports of agricultural produce because they want to boost production and help their farmers, why can't Nigeria do same?

Any serious rice importer should import through our ports, pay normal tariffs and duties and sell. I personally would wish that foreign rice to go as high as 50k, if you can't afford it then go for local, if you don't like it, other sources of carbohydrate are available an
d if you are not satisfied, DRINK WATER.
But has Nigeria arrived to that level of self sufficiency?

its not the mindset.. Is what am seeing..
Rice is still been imported only that to tip and get transportation has become more difficult hence the increase in price. No matter how it goes, daily hia in the north, Rice is been imported.. The closure of the border is meant for the west but not for the north. Think ahead. You guys are always on social network and listen to news and educated. Down hia they know nothing hence attention isn't on them so they can do it on a low and no one will have a clue except them. Think of words to use to satisfy yourself but hia in the north, things are happening

You must not arrive to a level of self sufficiency before acting to protecting yourself, most developed countries in the world today applied it at one time or the other to protect their farmers, keep jobs and protect their economies.
Japan for example still places high tariffs on rice imports till date and the price is one of the most expensive in the world, this was even after the US tried to squeeze it into accepting uncontrolled imports from the US.

the telecom industry is just the only example you have to offer. What about oil and gas, agriculture, textile, manufacturing etc? All in all, what goes up doesn't always come down as long as the Nigerian factor is involve.

the telecom industry is just the only example you have to offer. What about oil and gas, agriculture, textile, manufacturing etc? All in all, what goes up doesn't always come down as long as the Nigerian factor is involve.

The global oil and gas market is another example, when saudi and usa began to flood the market with excess oil the market crashed from $140 - $28. The Nigerian oil market is immune to these fluctuations due to govt subsidy.

Agric local market hasn't been given a run for its money due to the massive competition from smuggled foreign imports hence the meagre local farmers can't dictate the price, they simply flow with the imported ones.

The textile industry can't be rated because we don't grow cotton here in Nigeria in commercial scale because dirt cheap fabrics from as low as #1k for 5yards have flooded the market from the neighbouring countries. Aba is still struggling with linen production against imported linen, yeah your zippers, linen, buttons are imported angry

Manufacturing hmmmmmm, I'm into manufacturing and I can say categorically that 70% of all raw materials I use in my field is imported from China and the rest, we mainly do assembly here in Nigeria. Sometimes we make sales with lower than projected profits cus when we get to the market, the prices have gone up a notch or two, do we disappoint scarce clients ? No, What about the times the goods are scarce cus fresh container hasn't landed So are we manufacturing ? No, we buy parts from about 2 - 4 countries and assemble them in nigeria and claim they are made in Nigeria.

When the border closes, 180million people will be forced to solve the lacking things, naturally prices will be high but as more people enter the industry, newer cost effective techniques are implemented and competition strives, prices will crash.

Nigeria's market isn't responsive because of the foreign influence in the market, when Nigerian demand speaks, a foreign supply answers, the foreigners are not affected by Nigerian competition because if Nigeria won't buy from them, they simply look elsewhere, only demand in their country can make them adjust prices.
But if foreign supply is cut off or reduced to the barest minimum, when Nigerian demand speaks, the Nigerian supply will have to answer and it will keep getting louder until it matches and even over shadows the Nigerian demand and then, we begin to export . But first, we have to remove the foreign influence and let the Nigerian supply flex its muscles

How can Benin Republic with a population of 16millon become the sixth largest importer of rice in the world and the largest importer of rice in Africa.

Sometimes I doubt anything like Pan-africanism ever existed.

Yet, the president of Benin wants Nigeria to open its borders for further exploitation.

The government should be encouraged to even tighten the importation noose more.

Even if it will be more expensive in short term, Nigerians will gain more in the long run.

When Nigerians wear foreign clothes, drink foreign wines, eat imported food, it baffles me when they complain about unemployment.

For every grain of imported rice Nigerians actually provide employment for input sellers, agric engineers, extension works, marketers, supply chain experts, warehouse owners, transportation companies of the exporting countries.

China closed their border for more than 10 years and within that period they learn to produce whatever they needed, it was tough for them but then they are reaping the fruits of their sacrifices today.

Japan did the same. They mandated every family to cultivate cotton and invested the proceed on infrastructural and human capital development.

All these measures would have been perfect if there were no or very few saboteurs in the system. Let them buy the most advanced gadgets in the world and place them everywhere, it will still not stop the personnel that gain from smuggling activities in turning the blind eye or simply engaging actively for financial rewards.
E.g, are there no cameras at our airports, yet we are are travelling, it is right under this cameras that airport personnel take bribes or force you to give them even when you have nothing to hide in the fear of being delayed and missing your flight.
I don't know how, where or when we will make things right in our dear nation

Are they still forcing people to bribe them at the airports? I have not experienced that lately.

bro, this is not theory. It's practical. Locally produced rice for now will be very expensive because we don't have enough to go round and Nigeria being a country filled with corrupt and opportunistic people will experience a hike in the price of the available little.

Now imagine the Federal Government leaving the borders closed for another 3years,...lemme remind you that any business that brings in good money in Nigeria will be 'flooded' till the business crashes or becomes less profitable. What I am trying to say here is that, with the kind of money farmers will make during this period of border closure will encourage many more people go into farming...and before you know it, there will be more than enough to go round...and before you know it, farmers will be struggling to get people to buy their own...

Bro, this is beyond corrupt Nigerians. It's a natural thing. The price will crash.

This move by FG is long overdue. It's clear we have the capacity to grow enough rice to feed this nation. It may be uncomfortable at beginning but it will get better in the long run

Balance of Payment (BoP) from Nigeria to neighbouring countries is much higher than theirs to Nigeria. We won't lose much to them if they fight back. Government is only saying they should stop using their countries as transit locations for smuggling.

True. Our local rice is sweeter, fresher and more nutritious. It's healthier than the over processed, chemically preserved ten year old rice that we prefer to import because it's cheaper.

Very Good Nigeria is not doing Big Brother again. You neighboring countries have been milking us since.

The importers in your countries pays billions of dollars annually to ur respective government on rice duties. then smuggle the rice freely to Nigeria to sell and still make money without paying tax. What nonsense.

Buhari please cut of Benin, ghana,Togo, niger lights their debts is too much. Nigeria cannot be giving light freely when we citizens re paying high fees to enjoy power.

No more economic Big Brother again period

Don’t be silly, you don’t export electricity to neither Ghana or Togo
