babaolofin:No one mentioned South Africa here and the South African economy is not exactly as sophisticated as you paint it. A huge junk of the economy still relies on sales of primary goods(Agriculture and mineral resources) to the international market Do you know what is called dumping in economics. For instance When I was a child most of the Matches being used in my neighbourhood was manufactured in Ibadan, today the matches being use are all gotten from Malaysia and it's all as a result of dumping. What rice manufacturers in Tailand have managed to do for years is called dumping. They make it impossible for local manufacturers in Nigeria to compete effectively in the market because their government offer unbeatable subsidies which enables them sell their products at an unbelievable low price. And in return, Nigeria lose huge revenue and job opportunities that should have been created in the Agricultural sector. Rice is not air, Nigerians can live without it, let us cut it off until we can produce enough to bring the price down. It will only encourage demand for substitutes like yam and cassava. 10 Likes 1 Share |

jibbish:forget about corrupt mindset.. go to the north and see how they are importing rice using bikes. I went to buy rice yday and the aboki told me that it's expensive because it's a bit hard to now transport it across the border that means they have to increase d bribe they give customs officers hence making the rice expensive..all those closing of borders is meant for the westerners but not for the north |

ORIENTATION101:i already said you are stupidly and mistakenly made. Again ( A quarter of a year is enough in economics to correct abnormalities). well, west africa gas pipeline is an agreement between Nigeria and Ghana. Nigeria must supply ahead before cash is made. even in the agreement., Ghana owns about 16 percent stake of the project and now Ghana has settle up the usual debt and develop her own gas company. she will be exporting gas to ivory coast soon. now read 2019 news. https://www.thefinderonline.com/news/item/16334-ghana-propose-deal-to-export-gas-to-ivory-coast 2 Likes 1 Share

To discourage smuggling we are going to close our borders. This country is a joke that write itself. So you are leaving no option but smuggling in an anti-smuggling effort. The importation of rice from another country is not smuggling. You can label and outlaw it, if you want to. But it is not. Food is not and will never be contraband. Wicked people. |

Iamgrey5:We are also feeling the pinch here ... Turkey now N1,700. The trials and tribulations we have to go through as a country in order to become great is unbelievable and overwhelming. I keep telling people not to blame only buhari but to blame themselves(the citiZen) and past leaders. As a nation we’ve really been unwise these past 59 years... The people of Niger Republic do not eat parboil rice (they eat white rice), but importers based in Benin and Nigeria import parboiled rice to Benin Republic in very large quantities and then re-export same to Niger, Chad and Cameroon (all Nigeria’s next door neighbours) for smuggling into Nigeria where parboiled rice is eaten. This is the whole shenanigan in a nutshell. In addition to the steps being taken by the Federal Government, may the good Lord drive decent sense into those involved in this backdoor importation practice. That way, they will realize the enormity of the damage they're criminally inflicting on the economy of Nigeria. ........ P34c3 ..... ... 2 Likes |
