Besides the Yorubas or Hausas who were born or raised in Igbo land, there are not up to 100 Of them who can speak fluent Igbo.

Most Yorubas and Hausas dont know more than three words in the Igbo language, if any at all.

A typical Yoruba man or Hausa man cannot tell you anything about Igbo culture.

But if you are where the typical Yoruba/Hausa is arguing about why we should all remain as "one Nigeria", you will think the Igbo man is his immediate junior brother.

In stark contrast, many Igbos are fluent in Yoruba and Hausa. I have seen some Igbos who speak fluent Hausa but have never even been to the North. They learnt it from a neigbour who is a Northerner

There are thousands of Igbos who speak Yoruba. Late Biafran Warlord, General Ojukwu, spoke Yoruba as if he was a Yoruba man, just by living in Lagos.

worldwide, there are not up to 100 Yorubas or Hausas who can speak fluent Igbo

Asusu Igbo bu egwu eji!

The average Abo-ki is a poor linguist. The average Igbo has a knack for learning languages.

I can verify your statement 100%. The Igbos I went to school with could speak fluent Yoruba without a trace of an accent. They could recite Yoruba proverbs.

So speaking Igbo is now a criteria for unity?

Correction. There are probably the same number of Igbos that speak Yoruba as well as the number of Igbos that speak Igbo. Yoruba culture is just that influential and no. It has nothing to do with Lagos grin

Actually it does. Or do you honestly want us to believe that Igbos can speak Yoruba because of places like Osogbo and Ijebu Ode?

You learn a new language mostly out of necessity. Curiosity is only a small factor in learning a new language

part of the point may just be the hypocrisy of the one Nigeria defenders that do so only on paper and lip. The one nigrrianists that will never invest outside of their ancestral land. The one naijerianists that will never donn the attire of another,..that will never visit or live in other parts of their one naijeriya. Igbos ( and perhaps a few other minority ' tribes )are the only true Nigerians,.. But the conspiracy against them has made lots of them to want out of Nigeria

There's no conspiracy against Igbos. Most of the real and imagined issues with Igbos are mostly self inflicted and it's chiefly due to an outsized ego and inferiority complex. Having both is a paradox, if you ask me

lol....u are right to an extent and wrong to another
How are u right? The igbos get normal allocations from fg like every other people. The issue of igbo president could be because no strong igbo candidate has emerged since Azikiwe

How are u wrong? U are wrong because the creation of states were made primarily to cut the igbos to size. Gowon carefully carved major igbo territories into rivers state controlled by the ijaws to spite and curtail the igbos. Obj registered ikwere as an independent tribe to cutail the igbo but meanwhile he carved ijaw areas into ondo to gv the sw their 1st oil assets.
Unn was left to rot for yrs by the military while ABU and UI were getting major fundings. The 1999 constitution was a militart constitution with minimal igbo input as major stake holder in the nigeria project.
Ports in the east were abandoned by the military and obj for yrs while western ports were getting all the traffic.
The APC has refused to gv igbos any meaningful position for not voting them while pdp gave the north and west major positions even when they did not vote pdp.
There is conspiracy bro

An igbo intellectual wrote the unitary decree. He is still alive. An igbo president implemented the unitary degree. That's why i said most of the real and perceived issues are self inflicted. Doesn't matter if successors expanded on it, the Pandora's box was opened and engineered by Igbos

the unitary decree was not meant for civil rule. That is why it is a decree.
The thing u need to knw while gloating on igbos 'misfortunes' is that all SW states and indeed nigeria states (minus abuja) are in the same shithole status. Apart from braging rights of president...no region taken holistically is doing much better than other regions

There are more Igbo's in Yoruba land than Yoruba's in Igbo land....will any Igbo man who has never left anambra know how to speak Yoruba/Hausa? Of course not ....my grandmother can speak Igbo and Hausa cose she has lived in that region b4......Basic logic....and that figure of 100 is too small...

A language that nobody (other than the owner) wants to communicate with?

a tribe that has willingly deserted their own fatherland and killing themselves to build Yorubaland - And all they got was a gutter cleaning political adviser. Yoruba people with their silent killer instinct!

Hmm....great writeup, don't know much about what u wrote but let me defend obj small grin, the ijaw area of ondo state boundaries with Edo state, and we have the apomu apoi in Edo state and ijaw- apoi in ondo....both are ijaw tribe and they are too small to form a state ,so it not like it was carved from the rest of the ijaws to form a state....by the way oil was first discovered in araromi-obi (a Yoruba area) in ondo state then discovered in commercial quantity in Rivers. ......even if you were to carve all ijaw land out of ondo stage and make it a state ondo state will still have oil because of the ilaje/ikale area (Yoruba's), by the way this oil we are discussing is just 60,000 barrels...finally, ondo state was created on the 3rd of February 1976, obj became head of state on the 13th of February same yr.....thus muritala Muhammed and not OBJ created ondo state

Carve, carve, carve. Ilaje Ese Odo in Ondo State has always been the oil producing part and it has always been a subset of the Yoruba even before Ondo State was first created. I know that because my relatives were active with the creation and administration of the state after creation.
Go and tell the olugbo of Ugbo, (Obat Oil-Forbes rated $300m king) that his domain Igbokoda is Ijaw now and let him “pray” for you. grin
Always saying what they don’t know to fit into a victim narrative.
Obasanjo registered what?

So what is the OP insinuating? Why should an average Yoruba learn to speak Igbo? Why do I need to speak Igbo when I can learn English, French, or other international languages.

Some Igbos learnt Yoruba due to the fact that they travel to other regions en masse. I have an Igbo friend when I was young in Ibadan then, his whole family speaks Yoruba fluently then that I don't even know whether he is Igbo or not.

If the Yorubas always migrate en masse to other regions, then there is a higher chance they will speak the region language.

It's just common sense.

Don’t pay him any mind.
He stylishly revealed his bias. So Rivers/Ijaw oil was taken away from Igbo and Ijaw oil was given to Yoruba, right?
Victim mentality.
So the oil in Lagos, who was it taken from?
Nonsense

Well it might interest to know that the so called unitary decree you are talking about maintained:

The 4 existing Regions of the time.
Gave them resource control and fiscal discipline.
Gave the Regions 50% of anything accrued to them

Anyone who thinks Ironsi introduced unitary rule in Nigeria is someone who doesnt know Nigerian history
