He should replace smoking with exercise, and some kind of community outreach activity that he does regularly. That will help fight cravings, re-train his body/mind, and reestablish good habits.

Many people smoke to relieve stress, fight cravings for food, or out of sheer boredom. More people could easily quit (or seriously reduce it) by replacing it with exercise, sports, and new hobbies/art/whatever.
