Most people do not fall into that category. Majority of the poeple are afraid of armed robbers, kidnappers, the lawless and fantastically corrupt police force, and finally, the shame of nothing to show relatives for many years of living and working abroad. Majority of Nigerians do menial jobs like cleaning, healthcare assistants, office assistant etc. Their salaries are not enough to pay bills and save for home coming.

Rubicon67:

Are you speaking for yourself or people you know or think you know?

I think you are missing the point. The kind of 'lifestyle' you mentioned doesnt take a millionaire to live in developed countries.

Lifestyles such as good amenities, health care system that works, good educational and transportation system, adequate security, decent accommodation, banking system that doesn't extort, rule of law that works etc...are largely considered BASIC in the developed countries.

However, that doesn't mean things are perfect but if you want to compare struggles, you have lost the debate before it even starts.

After 30 years plus of living, trying to move back home, establishing business in Nigeria, having friends and family living and wishing they could move back home even with all the ills of Nigeria. I am eminently qualified to speak on this subject without fear of contradiction.
I currently have friends and even family members who will love to move back but financial hindrance is part of the reason why some can't.
No one is saying Nigeria is perfect, but the US or any other country is not perfect either. It's only those that have just recently left Nigeria or are still dreaming of leaving that will think that everything is honky dorrie the moment you leave Nigeria.

You can add security guard and making hair (not owning the salon) ... All those jobs are enough to be somebody in Nigeria, it depends on personal expenditure. Except now that ad-hoc contracting is affecting employment, it may be more difficult but not impossible

Nigeria is not as bad as you portray.. I have been away for over 8years now, and the reason is lack of electricity, thats our major problem.. Believe me many country won't survive if they don't have constant electricity... So our government need to fix that first and believe me 80percent of Nigerians abroad will go back home.. No place like home
This people are not listening to you, their brains are fried to the believe that abroad is the only heaven on earth . With this set of people Nigeria can't improve I wish theres a way they can all be selected and pushed out of the country so those who believe in the country can stay and build a nation devoid of myopic unpatriotic people.

The only reason why nobody wants to return is because of the sh*tty state of the nation with no hope in sight....

When those living here wants to japa, who in his right senses would want to come here to be

* Kidnapped by herds men or ritualist

* Robbed at gunpoint

* Killed by Sars accidental discharge

* Harrassed by Efcc because he's a well to do citizen

An average Nigerian returnee won't keep low profile they always want to show they are better than the next guy . Then kidnapping is their case.

I know how it feels to move from your beloved country, for whatever the reason, and settle in another country.
I myself have moved to another country, and have spent so long here, I have got citizenship.
Awesome I thought.

But then you start thinking about friends and family you have left behind. You become disconnected, not really knowing your true citizenship.
It is a strange feeling.

The irony is those who call Nigeria a shit-hole but are still living in it. What does that make you?

What lives in a s***hole? Answer that question before next you call your place of origin one. An outsider insulted your country and you too are joining mouth to insult it too. Smh.
Actually those that call Nigeria by that name are the major bad eggs in our society, they have nothing to offer any society and when they finally get into western countries they turn to crime and before you know it they are in jail.

Your number two is so on point.
When you begin to analyse the way average Nigerian reasons, you might be forgiven for thinking you are in a mad house.

To overcome this, don't go and live in the city when you are in Nigeria. Make sure you find yourself a place in your village, a bit away from most people.
This was exactly what I did, and I enjoy Nigeria now. I moved about 400 metres away from everyone and built myself a house with a very tall fence around it. Many people only know I am around when they see my car pass.

If you have been overseas for over 19 years like me including the academic accomplishment, it is very difficult for you to find people that think like you who live in Nigeria.
Bro. How do you manage security wise? I mean I have an idea but more would be fine.

What about lack of papers?

What about lack of money after years that has subjected you to think that ppl will look down on you?

Oga that one is another big wahala, most of them spend 30 years paying mortgage taxes and working 9-5 that when they finally return to Nigeria they would realize that the proceeds from the house they sold abroad can't even buy them a good house in lekki them, frustration sets in.

Money

I can’t imagine a well paid American resident going from making millions a month to making small change (by comparison) . Yes even the high paid Nigerians who aren’t stealing are making change money.

Making millions of what monthly, naira or dollars?

Are you people sane at all? Kai, you are all in for a RUDE shock if you manage to get here!

Number 1 and 2 reasons: hiding from immigration and finding out in retrospect Nigeria offered better opportunity evident in not making it abroad relative to expectations, especially the expectations of family back in Nigeria. The post bellow is very true.

Shame of seeing their mates they left in Nigeria surpassed them is the real reason not those other bogus reasons.

These are some general reasons why a lot of Nigerians abroad are unlikely to return home:

▪︎Being Estranged from Family

The longer you stay abroad, the easier it is to lose ties with family over time. This is could be for a number of reasons, mainly being that people naturally just grow apart ... however, many of us unfortunately have a lot of relatives back home who see us as nothing but a means to an end ... there are many betrayal stories of people being scammed by called family members and even cases of witchcraft.. lol.

▪︎Inability to Adapt to the Climate Back Home

Living abroad for a lengthy period of time can make you forget how things are back home. So when you eventually go visiting, the first 2 weeks can be fun and exciting... however, by the third week, the Nigerian climate begins to become exhausting. You start to get agitated by the mediocrity and myopic mindsets of the average person around you... the culture (or lack therein) begins to bother you, the heat, the mosquitos, the extortionate fees for internet use, the lack of electricity, the fake forming of almost every young person... it just gets too much.

▪︎Health Reasons

Those with medical conditions are aware that the health sector in Nigeria is in shambles. As thus, they would rather stay in an environment where their medical needs are met.

▪︎ Introvertedness

Life abroad favours the introvert. In Nigeria, people can be loud, there's not much privacy, people don't mind their business. This is something that a lot of people abroad cannot adapt to ... therefore, they choose to remain abroad.

▪︎ Papers

Some are stuck abroad because of the notoriously known complications of obtaining papers. I don't need to explain this one further.

▪︎ Children

If you've had kids abroad, the thought of moving them back home can be scary as they've already been acclimatised to the lifestyle and upbringing here.

▪︎ Commitments

Those who have gotten married, built a career and bought houses might find it difficult to up and leave what they have laboured for just to return home to an uncertain terrain.

Feel free to add yours.
