Okorocha is advocating a move that will make him the emperor of imo state, judging from the fact that the national assembly have no tenure restriction. I will support this idea if he is also advocating for two term tenures for senators....

North no go ever agree. I heard some northern states gave up to 4senators.

The north would never allow anything that will change the status quo, instead to them let Nigeria remain stagnant than for it to change
you heardhuh...which kind of gullibility is this...every state has just 3 senatorial zones..

Each state has 3 Senators, no state has more than that. To have more than 3 the constituition must be amended. I like what Senator Rochas suggested, but this will make the Senators kind up equivalent to Governors and a bigger fight will start.

Hmm... Okorocha has spoken again...

Seriously, if this man wasn't slightly mentally unstable and a thief, he would have made an exceptional leader.

I love his statement up there... I couldn't agree more.

Even if we scrap senate and house of reps, money will not still be enough.
Re: Okorocha Advocates One Senator Per State To Cut Cost Of Governance by chrisxxx(m): 4:56pm On Oct 03, 2019
This never makes sense in any way. The right thing to do is to use the salary and allowances due a senator presently to pay the three each state presents. In other words I am saying a reduction in their allowances to 1/3.
If this is achieved only those interested in the welfare of their people will contest.

Good idea but it will create big WAHALA during election as every person or godfather will make it a do or die affair to be the choosen SENATOR

Never going to work.

We will end up in a situation where a particular ethnic group perpetually dominates others within the state, in a similar fashion they do governorship. This would simply birth another round of political upheavals to add to all that we are already contending with.

These legislators know the truth but they keep skirting around it: Simply cut back on your salaries and allowances if you are sincerely looking for a way to cut back on your expenditure. This is alot more practical and pragmatic than what is being proposed here which would even require a constitutional ammendment!
Well said.

Sensible though ,but true federalism where each region develops at its own pace is the only way actually. Let there be heathy competition among the regions. It may surprise many that the old south western region had television station before some European countries like France,Spain etc.

Where are we today with this unitary system that the military imposed on us ? We can never develop as a nation if we continue this way. Each region should be allowed to use their god given resources and talents to develop their region while they remit certain percentage of their income to the central government which will be responsible for defense and other miscellaneous duties

Absolutely in agreement wt u sir, which must as well be back up by a single camera legislature.lower house and upper chamber is eating and heating nigeria up.Docility, red tapeism and effort duplication will continue 2 thrive as long as a job meant for one person is given 4 people. i pray & hope this scale through as d beneficiaries are d judge in dia own case.

This is not good at all. Assuming we have 4 senatorial seats in a state and it then boil down to one, that means that one person will be given 800 million for each of the constituencies....I think this will create more looting avenue for them as most of them can barely boast of tangible projects.

Kenneth Udeh, Abuja

Senator representing Imo West, Senator Rochas Okorocha has advocated the reduction in the number of senators representing various states at the National Assembly, especially at the Senate.

Okorocha a former governor of Imo State elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) , made this known during Thursday’s plenary session.

He made the comments during his contribution to the Medium Term Expenditure Framework And Fiscal Strategy Paper submitted by the joint committee on finance and national planning.

He stressed that if the plan was implemented, it would help to reduce the cost of governance in the country, stating that it would further help the country maintain fiscal discipline.

He said: “This country must begin to make sacrifices; our country provides that we have three Senators, but what are the three Senators per state doing that one single senator from that state cannot do? With over 300 representatives from the states, each of them creates increased demands from the economic system.

“What we need to have under the present ugly economic situation is have a statutory representative one per state to reduce the cost of governance.

“Secondly, we need to fund the productive sector of our economy. Government is business. Our Senate must not operate our budget from an accountant’s perspective but an economic perspective

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, in his reaction, advised Sen. Okorocha to formulate a constitution-amendment bill to back up his contribution.

He said: “Your contribution can be translated into a bill; if you want a state to have only one senator, your contribution requires a constitutional amendment.

“You have the opportunity to present a bill to seek for the amendment of the relevant sections of the constitution that provides for three senators per state.

Nigerian legislator at the federal and state level should also sit part time.

That will also cut the cost of governance.

This is a very wrong suggestion!!!

If it us being done, the expenses on the few senators will definitely increase.
The one only thing to cut expenses is to remove EVERY incentives or allowances given to them and then reduce their bulky salaries.
