It's a lil bit easier in the state schools. Avoid the big federal schools (UNN, UNIBEN and the likes). I would have recommended Delsu but recently they have been conducting funny post UTME exams

Their post UTME is an aptitude test, current affairs and shit! But their cutoff is usually moderate.

no current affairs for this year's own it was just difficult aptitude test and English .note 50 questions for 30 minutes and no system calculate or handheld calculator

In federal universities if you get your cutoff,you have no problem getting admitted,tho generally the cutoff in federal schools is higher than state schools

yh it happened a lot in AAU but what I observe is that people who scored 75 and above got medicine by merit

lol u know AAU extended their sales of form deadline so it looks like 70 cut off could not accommodate everyone that crossed it so they had to increase it to 75 cause medicine has specific numbers that must not b exceeded

Let's say about N140,000 each for second year and third year(I have factored in Misc. such as faculty dues, bank charges etc under school fees)

For 400L to 600L let's say about N165,000{Misc. such as Faculty dues, bank charges etc is factored in under school fees) for each of those years.

*Mind you textbooks, Scrubs, Stethoscope, Dental tools, Pocket money, food stuff hasn't been factored in.

*My analysis might not be spot on correct. Nevertheless, I'm sure it hovers around the actual figures.

Unimaid catchment are the northeastern states, all within the circumference of where Borno is.

You're almost 20! That's cool B'cuz you still have enough time to pursue MBBS.
Easy to get MBBS? Well to me, there is nothing easy about getting MBBS. If it's that easy then 95% of those wanting MBBS should get it.
But if you're ready to sacrifice what it takes then the following schools will do;
UI, OAU, Unimaid - Federals
Lasu, Ebsu, Absu - State.

Also try DE with utme too next years if you can do both... It increases your chances if you choose different schools

Getting Admitted into Medicine... Where am I missing it here?
PS: This is a long post riddled with opinions of the writer alone, you're free to agree to it or not and it's not meant to denigrate any medical school.
Getting admitted into Medicine is a herculean task, to be candid Medicine is not easy to get at all, less than 10% of all medical aspirants get in at first attempt - others have to try twice, thrice... And some it was at the sixth attempt. I'm not here to hype medicine or paint the gory tales of admission seekers, rather channel your minds to few factors that might have been the cause of delay as a medical enthusiast.

One, Do you want to really study medicine or you want to study the university? Don't get me wrong, it is okay to crave for admission into Nigeria's ivy league, it is very okay to want admission in schools like UI, UNN, OAU, ABU, UniBen etc but when you can't get in at 1st and 2nd attempt - switch university don't trade dreams. It took me longer than expected that 'medical education at the undergraduate level is the same', That it's not by the university name but what you acquire overtime there. We are all addressed as 'doctors' in the clinical setting not 'Unilag Doctor', 'Absu Doctor', 'Unimaid Doctor'. Have a proper mindset as medical aspirants. 'Accreditation Status', 'Facilities available', 'Standard Teaching Hospital', 'Available Personnels' are what you should be considering when selecting schools not name of school, category of students going there, location or friends choice. Stop wasting money and time chasing Unilag when you know your grades would have fetched you that same MBBS in LASU.

Two, Admission Process. Medical education is not always that smooth. Most schools compromise when it comes to MBBS - I don't blame them, all medical schools in Nigeria do get more than needed aspirants. The golden rule here is 'Try to beat the process'. Some schools write post utme, others don't, some schools consider O'levels, some don't use Olevel at all - some schools bank only on utme, Some published cut off marks, Some hide their cut off marks from the public, some consider indigene..... You need to know the one you can 'beat their process'. Find out all the information you need, don't just bank on what you see online, make findings from people there, because you read it online from a wacky blog that a school cut off mark is 270 does not mean 270 on dot will 100% get you MBBS there. You need to ask those inside the system. You need to score more.

Three, Be ready to bend. I learnt this phrase too very late. 'Be dogmatic to your goals but flexible with your approach'. Not all medical students gain admission via Utme. Try other means like jupeb, pre degree, remedial.... Even DE and Change of Course at the end of 100lvl for schools that do such. Ade wrote utme for six consecutive times before getting MBBS whilst his friend Bayo wrote once got Microbiology, finished and applied via DE. Ade wasted six years at home with nothing propelling him towards his goal while Bayo bagged a separate degree during that period.

Four, Consider God Factor and be happy for others in the system. Delay is not denial. You not getting it last year doesn't mean you can't get it forever. Oh ye medical aspirants know thine self - know your strongholds, know where you can excel, work on your flaws. Beat competition at where it favours you the most, consider catchment where it favours you the most, head slam merit where you can get it, build your connections too - no one is too small or less important to help, connect with helpers and stay updated, don't bank on online hearsays when choosing schools.
Always remember "The goal is to be a Doctor not to study Medicine".

I want to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone here especially Dr lagusta and other pioneer Bosses who kick-started this thread.

I had given up on studying medicine after staying back home for almost 5 yrs due to financial issues.

I visited Nairaland once in a while but never discovered this thread until last year, accidentally even.

I had just finished 100l in a biological course after getting admission in 2017 when things turned a corner for us financially.

I was generally unhappy with my life and was bordering on acute depression back then,until I saw myself here unintentionally.


The posts I came across here and the diaries that I read( and still following) lit a fire under my belly and I started believing that i could really pull this off inspite of me being a shadow of my Secondary school self academically.

I decided to give it my last shot and by the grace of God and with the help of most people here(bulk of them unknowingly) I am now a fresh medical student in Enugu State University (Esut) by Merit.


I will forever remain grateful to God and my Messiahs here.

A friend of mine just gained admission to study medicine in a state university,she told me it was mainly through connection as she didn't beat the cutoff.she had 255 in jamb but I dunno about her postutme score,just that she didn't beat cutoff.
Problem is that she told me she's scared because of the fact that she didn't make it on merit,because we all know how hard med school is,she feels she's not intelligent enough to study medicine,but she has passion for it and that's what she really wants to study.she feels that people who get 280+ in jamb are the ones smart enough to study medicine

Please any advice for her?
