The closure of land borders by the Federal Government was done in good faith, Chairman Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir has said. The senator, representing Sokoto East, who commented on the closure, said it was done to prevent the movement of arms and other dangerous weapons into nation.

The lawmaker, who said the measure was also necessary to add greater value to local foods, stated that the attendant hardship was temporary. Gobir said President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan was to ensure adequate protection of lives and properties in the country. According to him, the President has a good programme and plan to ensure that every Nigerian lives in peace. He said a lot of measures were being taken to safeguard the people and their properties. This, he said, was particularly in the northern region where cases of kidnapping, cattle rustling, banditry had become prevalent. The senator tasked the youths on education as well as skills acquisition

Yes, we all know it is in good faith, but not putting the car before the horse.

Local production should have been stregtened first, by policies like decrease in tax and provision of adequate social security, amenities and friendlier business environment, not increase in tax and VAT.

We need to be self-sufficient first, local production should be able to meet local demand and consumption.

Oh really!

There's no way government can permanently eradicate the smuggling of harmful items but they can only manage to reduce the limit of which its been smuggled into the country, even the advance countries with high standards equipped securities forces still have people smuggling illegal items into their countries.

I don't really support the fact that closure of boader is the best way to make people purchase our local items, it should be a matter of choice/option for people between local and foreign items, if our government can assist our local farmers in branding their products and making it looks more good then people will willingly choice the local items.

I learnt that even the price of local rice as an example is even a little bit cheaper to the foreign rice so what's the main point.

Banning foreign rice is like locking ur child at home and force him to listen to radio because he watches TV in your neighbors house hoping he would chose radio over TV instead to buy TV

One hectares of Nigerian rice farm yeilds 1 ton of rice paddy or 800kg to 900kg of rice averagly ...in Thailand its 10 tons ..or 9 tons of rice

Tackling the symptoms is nothing ...Jonathan government focused more on developing seeds that can increase our yield for rice and what ....they developed 6 tons variety ...where are they now

We have crop sciences in many university give them grants to develop seeds that can match what Thailand has

Can we close our border for 10 years ? Can we

Border closure to me is a good initiative but what are the palliative measure in place
to curb the untold hardship this is bringing on the masses?
Take rice for instance, the local one is not easy t come by; prices has skyrocketed due to the border closure. embarassed

Buhari we support you on this.

Neighboring countries have been surviving at our own expense. Close the border for 3 more years.

Lets get things clear... Only land borders were closed, if you really want to access Nigerian market, then use our seaports and pay the right custom duty on you goods

Should Fulani Aliens continue flooding our territotries and killing us because we want to eat rice,

Local rice is an alternative available in the market, there are beans in the market and yam, and should you want to import rice so badly then use Apapa or Warri seaport and pay the right custom duties

Good faith alone does not build great economies. Whatever happened to proper assessment of local capacity for equivalent supply? This same good faith in the implementation of the TSA sank the country into economic recession.

This decision in my opinion was premature.

You say wetin?

At 59, with about 200 million people, with our vast-fertile land, "we aren't ripe for closure of borders now" . abeg let's go hungry joor.

Then we would be forced to look inward and harness what God has blessed us with.

I support bother closure in it's entirety.
