Would there be a need to "tame" people if you don't subjugate them, or deny them of what rightfully and constitutionally belongs to them??!... Where is your objectivity sir??! Where is your integrity??!...

If you are a man or woman of conscience but chose to ignore the lines below, when injustice will come your way, may you be engaged just as the military engaged those defenseless civilians - women and children - especially. Asaba massacre on my mind. Who calls out an entire community of most able men and women and children for a meeting but chose to shoot them instead. This happened in this nation, not Hitler's Germany.
henrynwafor:

The waging of war is different from the mass murder of civilians. The former is lawful, the latter is not. The war between two armies is legitimate but the targeting and slaughtering of innocent and defenseless men, women and children is a violation of international law and a crime against humanity.

I am not supporting war in any way. But when there's war, you can't use civilians for emotional blackmail to coax your enemies. Civilians died too during American Civil War now. Why didn't Abraham Lincoln allow the South to separate since civilians were dying? Surrender, you don't want to surrender, you're using your civilians to blackmail the federal government. Why did they go to war in the first place when they knew they were not capable? Both sides were at fault.

Committing genocide against a group you intend to integrate back into your fold and form a great One Nigerian nation is wisdom according to you.

Do war crimes, crime against humanity and genocide even mean anything to you?

oh ok, please name one significant infrastructure that Gowon put in place during his rule that’s still of use in Nigeria of today. There has never been any good leader is this country’s history

go and do some reading and stop talking out of ignorance. Ask those who were around both Nigerians and foreigners.

Ignore the fellow. The war occurred over 50 years ago so we have the benefit of time to judge who was on the side of truth and vice-versa. If any one chooses to ignore the fundamental issues of the Biafra and rather display their ignorance and ethnic bias on social media because of the ubiquity of social media and affordable data access, the best you can do is to allow them to wallow in their vomit.

gidgiddy:

Cant you see how laughable what you are saying is? That Northerners had a different reason for killing Igbos in 1945, 1953 and 1966. What if Igbos had retaliated and killed Northerners in in the East in 1945 and 1953? Or you think that retaliation is only for Northerners? They have been killings Igbos for a long time, even to.this day. Even if the January 1966 coup had not happened, they would still found a reason to kill Igbos.

All these killings only hoes to show that "one Nigeria" is a sham

The cause of the civil war was Gowon. It was Gowon that signed and agreement in Aburi to preserve the 4 Regional structure of Nigeria and it was Gowon who announced decree 14 of 1967 where he abolished the 4 Regional structure and created 12 states. This was the beginning of "divide and rule" which the North still uses to dominate Nigeria. Today, the 12 states Gowon created has been further divided to 36 states.

What many people dont realise is that the Regional structure prevented the North from dominating Nigeria, that's why Gowon scrapped it. The only problem for the North was that Igbos were not about to take it lying down.

Gowon caused the war by reneging on the Aburi agreement he signed

Slavery is more metaphorical than literal...

It's a universally accepted fact that taking control, utilization, and transfer of the resources of a region without full recompense to the citizens of that region is nothing short of the term...

Centering political power and key political positions around specific individuals from particular zones instead of total inclusiveness of all regions is well indicted in the term... This is universally known fact!!!

These were issues that were addressed in the Aburi accord. Had they been adhered to and fully implemented, we won't be here today... The war would never have occurred in the first place.

This is what true federalism is all about.

but come on, why always ibos? Everywhere they go, they never get along with others? if you go abroad and there is conflict or problem, most of those foreigner will either tell you they have problem with Nigerians or Ibos. i am not saying yorubas dont commit crimes abroad but why is it Ibos are known abroad when it comes to problems as distinct from Nigerians?

on local conflicts, It has not escaped my mind that Ibos are in a worse situation now that they were before, each time they try something politically, they fail and end up in a worse situation

1. Ibos are worse of now in terms of resources than they were before the Nzeogwu coup. If Ibos hadnt staged the coup, 50% of all the revenue from Oil today would be going to the eastern region and they will still get a share out of the rest. there would be no states, so would control the region and its oil.

2. ibos are worse off now than they were politically before the civil war, so what was acheived?

3. Ibos are worse of now than they were before the Biafra/ipod/ hate propaganda that followed the 2015 elections.

Ibos are good in business because they have a winner takes all mentality, that mindset does not work when dealing with people, that IMHO is why anywhere they go they are always in conflict with their hosts and also why they always fail politically. politics is about people and about compromise!!

if the ibo man has just been patient, they would control 50% of the revenue from Nigerias oil today, if the ibo man had been patient in 1967, they would long have attained presidency of Nigeria, if the ibo man ahd been patient in 2015, they would have a case for 2023 presidency,as it stands there will be no ibo president anytime soon.

I will get abused but think about it!!! The ibo man with his greed and misadventures with coups and civil wars and inability to resolve conflicts harmoniously is IMHO responsible for Nigeria's problems today. Without coup or civil war, every region would be keeping 50% of it's derived income, and the North would not have become accustomed to free money from oil that has become a difficult for them to give up and a noose around everyone else's neck!!!.

Derivation and Revenue Allocation, 1946-99

you had federalism and waged a war now what do you have? penny wise pound foolish. Ojukwu was driven by greed, he wanted all the oil, that's why despite his training as a soldier, despite advice from his generals, he went to war he was ill equiped to win.

You cant declare seccession will newly discovered Oil and expect the federal govt to say "ok we wish you well".

Now with reduced derivation, the SE states get nothing because more states were created excluding most of the SE from direct Oil receipts. Whereas the Ibos controlled the entire SE (including) before the war, now the SS has more power and all the money from Oil.

The history of Nigeria post independence says to me that the ibo man will rather spoil everything for everybody if he doesnt get his way, find himself in a worse situation and still continue complaining instead of learning from past unstrategic or ill-timed misteps.

The whole thing was about Oil, Gowon checkmated Ojukwu by creating 3 states out of the SE region, when Ojukwu realised he would have no oil he declared secession 3 days after the pronoucement while he was still in control of the 3 regions. Thats the long and short of the war.

Okay but why were women and children or the vulnerable included in the war. He deprived them from feeding and most of them died from kwashiokor after the Nigerian forces sided by threatening the border states of the Biafra region.
Even when Biafra was conquering lands to reach the capital, Lagos. They didn't touch women and children but only the able bodied men, who came to stop them.
Although I neither support anyone, but let's see with pure judgement. There's no victory and no vanquished, all are wrong and should be corrected.

Your perspective is what is laughable.

You don't know the difference between a genocide and a riot.

Genocides are systematic or intentional mob actions targeted at a specific ethnic or religious group. Riots are not that deeply planned.

Riot can happen quickly, but genocides take planning and even strategies.

The Kano riot, for instance, was targeted at Yorubas. The mob was chanting Yoruba as they burst into Sabon Gari, but Igbos ended up with the major casualties.

As for retaliation, how many Hausa-Fulanis were in Igboland prior to Independence, and the Civil War? Aside the nomadic Fulanis, the other major Northern extractions were not known travelers, at least not as much as the Igbos.

Moreover, Ojukwu had ambitions, and uncontrolled reprisal attacks were not one of them. His ambitions were greater than that. It all began when Gowon became his senior in the military, and his boss as well.

Remember that Gowon and Ojukwu were same rank in the military before Gowon became Head of State.

Like I told someone up there, I know the history of Nigeria and I don't need you to teach me nonsense.

What provoked the northerners rage at first? Isn't it because the barrack boys of mostly Igbo origin slaughtered their leaders? Have you ever read the Aburi accord in it entirety and listened to Ojukwu press briefing before the war?

He was boasting that the Biafran side will win the war in few months because he said he had the expertise to win the war quickly. Ojukwu in saner climes should have been taken to the ICC for purposely slaughtering his kinsmen for his ego when he knew he can't face the federal side alone without the needed alliance.

There are numerous way to go about the disagreement of the Aburi accord than opting for the useless war that had made Nigeria this polarized and directionless.

Note: This is the basic core summary of the Aburi accord
Re-organisation of the Armed forces
Constitutional Arrangement
Issue of displaced persons within Nigeria

Most igbo will still defend their mad general for drawing them into a needless war. The chest beating syndrome didnt work out for him, it was just unfortunate.

For those of you who think ffk is on ur side, watch as he betray you easily. The man is just singing a political song he knows the igbos will like to hear. He cant be trusted. If them offer am one juicy seat now, the man go switch off.
