That's what I don't understand. Hausa and Fulani are two distinct languages, nothing connects them at all other than region.

shocked

Hausa is not worth learning in the 21st century. It has no benefits abroad.

As a matter offact, the Hausa language is the most popular nigerian language outside the country.
Infact, you can get more NGO jobs and international organization like UNICEF, UNESCO et al jobs with a required degree and fluency in the language.

Not surprising. Only very few Hausa kids speak excellent hausa, except in Kano

Why is this so?

actually you get it wrong. They are distinct but years of living together have made them indivisible, thats why the phrase Hausa-fulani. You will see someone with a fulani dad and hausa mom or vice-versa, hundred of years of living together has made it so that it is hard to differentiate at times. Though there are pure fulanis that haven't cross bred with hausa. Buhari dad is a fulani man but was the leader in a hausa community, Daura. Also Hausa to many fulanis is a first language( normally to the urban fulanis) and second language to the nomad fulanis that are made up of pure fulanis. I know of many fulanis that hardly speak fulfulde but Hausa is generally understood not just among fulanis but the general North

.

You have a point. However, intermarriage and geographical consanguinity do not fuse two distinct ethnic groups. All that aside, they are vastly different. Even physically, it is very easy to tell an Hausa man from a Fulbe.

The 'Hausa-Fulani' contraption is political. The relationship between them is, in truth, akin to that of aristocrats and plebs.
