MobilityExpress:Your emphasis on blocks as major cause of collapse is indeed interesting, laughable, suspicious but overall.. not true. Be informed that blocks dont usually serve as structural members especially in multi storey buildings. They, most times serve as partition members. Which explains why there are different sizes of blocks. It also explains why we have buildings whose fabric are made of glass and other materials. Blocks pay very minute role in structural stability. Issues such as substandard materials especially reinforcement rods, poor concrete mix ratios, poor supervision, wrong structural calculations, overloading are culprits in building collapses. It is therefore important to state that our monitoring agencies need to do more in terms of ensuring quality rather than their usual attitude of collecting bribes and turning blind eyes to poor construction processes. |

MobilityExpress:Lol. How can BLOCKS be responsible for the collapse of a building like this? Reinforced concrete columns bear the weight of the building and not block walls. If the structural frame of the building is done well, you can do the walls with glass or even carton, it will stand. |

Heaven knows that I will bring those local block molders to mold the whole blocks that will be used to build my house manually. I must be personally around to make sure that the aggregates for the concrete works is correctly counted and added. An aggregate of 10 bags of cement and 25 head pans of gravel can be reduced to 6 bags of cement and 15headpans of gravel. I don't trust Nigerian Engineers and foremen. They are mostly shady. All those vibrated block molding machines are often times substandard. A country that people adulterate palm oil with dangerous chemicals for fraudulent gains, what will they not do with cement, iron rods and blocks? A country where drugs are produced in people's homes. A nation where people manufacture Stout and other beers in their living room. A norm less society where life is short, brutish and nasty. |

I am of the opinion that there should be a total overhaul in the building industry,Government at all levels should come up with stringent measures to make sure that building structures are erected according to the building plan and monitoring team should always visit the site in real time. Also,on any building project the Architect and other service engineers names should be boldly placed on site in case anything goes wrong, they will be called for questioning. |

MobilityExpress:it's not even block... Block isn't the problem.... If d building was properly reinforced with the right rods... Whether d block na sand sef it won't fall... They used substandard rods... That's why it collapsed as if. No rod whatsoever was introduced into d concrete |

| Re: Building Collapses In Ikoyi, Many Trapped by sirlop(m): 4:14am On Nov 02, 2019 |
MobilityExpress:Blocks aren’t the reason for building collapse in Lagos. Blocks are mere partition walls that bear very little loads. The main load bearing members are the footing (foundation), columns, beams and slabs. From the picture of the collapse, I wouldn’t blame the foundation, cos it collapsed as a result of wrong beam arrangement/reinforcement. One side collapsed and the other sides are still standing. I advice the use of qualified structural engineers in such projects. It’s a pity, these stingy clients overlook us and rather prefer to use unqualified people. They will continue losing on the long run. I just pity the artisans that lost their lives. May their souls RIP |

From look of things this building looks more like a government edifice these didn't happen as a result of inferior materials rather the engnr, moreover the engnr handling the work is to be blame see cantilever shutout with no proper reinforcement since your cantilever will stretch close to 2m you should have reinforce it through the foundation out of the blue voom cantilever even if u like use 20mm rod it will just be a matter of time...... NB. The building doesn't look cheap so it not a material fault for me rather construction. They should arrest the man asap.
