Guys serious trouble is looming as from Nov 29. If you have opportunity to lock your fund now for longer terms above 10% please do so asap. Treasury bills might go lower to single digits rate if care is not taken with all these CBN monetary policies. I never expected Emefiele to go this "low".

He's trying to encourage you and I, and other insitutional investors to invest in the real economy. Following this move, I expect the rates to go lower.
Our TBills rates are among the highest.

Boss, not everyone of us can invest in real sector as some people lives abroad and judging from past experiences with family and friends handling businesses without owners presence was bad for me. In life, people can be sincere and be sincerely wrong which sometimes lead to business failures. Some of us maintain our sanity by investing in money market instruments like Tbills, bonds, CP and co.

Emefiele finally buried treasury bills sales to individuals. It is ok.
My question now is can investment house bid for individuals?

I quite agree with you.

Individuals should be allowed to invest in tbills. Low rates is better than nothing.
Like you mentioned as well, there are other money market instruments to divest into.

Wow. Attractive rates. I wish Nigeria banks with branches in Ghana can help with buying their tbills. No wonder why they are only banning for individuals

Hello House,

It's time to think of a way forward.

Short/mid term bonds (5 yr) may be an option.
Agrotech investments are also a possibility.

Please lets share ideas.

Thanks.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has given a directive to banks and other financial institutions to stop the sale of treasury bills to individuals and small firms with effect from November 29.

Some bank officials who disclosed this to The PUNCH said only big corporate organisations would be allowed to do treasury bills investments.

Our correspondents learnt that banks were already notifying their customers of the new directive.

The sources, however, said the existing treasury bills investments would be allowed to continue till the end of their maturity dates.

A bank official said, “Operators are trying to see if the November 29 deadline given for the implementation by the CBN could be extended, so as to create enough awareness. But there is no move for the reversal of the directive.”

An operator said the inaccessibility of treasury bills might lead to an increase in savings deposits of the banks, attracting interest rates below what the treasury bills offered.

A source from the CBN said the move was to stop the mop-up of funds from the system through the treasury bills.

He said, “Many people with huge cash prefer to keep their funds idle in treasury bills instead of investing the funds. Some people collect huge severance package, have huge funds but they have refused to invest the money.

“We want these funds to be useful in the economy so that they will be available in the banks and can be invested to create more jobs in the country.”

He noted that the CBN had increased the Loan to Deposit Ratio of the banks from 60 per cent to 65 per cent.

Carbonated beverages, whoever goes into it should get prepared as govt mulls excise duty, likely suffer dip in sales like beer makers.

You welcome.
If you use GTB, this might help both whatsapp and contact details is there. Afterall, our own CBN still allows foreign investors in OMO and treasury bills so Ghana should allow us too as foreign investors.

Still vague, can someone else help. Parameters will be appreciated. Examples will speak volumes. What is a "big firm" as used in the directive by CBN.

While the Emefiele-CBN's directive is to limit funds in the system for alternative purposes I.e investing in the real economy/sector, its the 21st century and Nigerians being smart will exploit the loopholes.

Since the CBN limits dealing in T-bills to big organizations, its only a matter of time before these " big organizations " create their own banking system to collect funds from individuals and invest them on their behalf.

The obvious alternative is investing in other economies, but then its an excellent move to me by Emefiele. Real Sector Investors helps to create more jobs and promotes circulation of wealth/money better.

Its only a matter of time to address the dichotomy between the digital economy and the real economy. Good move CBN. For once, I'm proud of Emefiele.
