Anyone here into single board computers? For me this is where the fun is ever since Linux essentially "conquered" the desktop and became easy to use. :p
. Anywhere I am quite bullish about the potentials of single board computers especially for specific applications and use cases. They low power consumption is a huge plus for someone like me who runs offgrid.

My goal is to build a home lab made up of sbc and I ha e the following in mind.

For NAS I got the Helios4 Open source nas project. It runs the Armada soc which is optimized for io and applications that requires high through put. Some models of synology runs same soc. The Helios4 nas kit can take 4 sata3 drives using dedicated native sata lanes. I intend to use it as my home nas with 4 x 8gb Western digital Reds. Not sure yet which OS to run but arch Linux debian and armbian are all strong contenders

For home theater system I got the odroid n2 which would be used as a media center to run Kodi. This sbc is currently the most powerful General purpose sbc out there and well equipped to run media.

Of cause tbe raspberry pi 4 would also cameo in the setup. It would be used mostly as compute nodes running various services and servers like kubernetes docker we services etc.
The only x86 chip in the setup is the pc engine apuc4 to run pfsense.

Never tried them. Where did you buy from?

Mostly from amazon. The Helios4 Nas was preordered via kickstarter the 3rd batch. I would be buying the raspberry Pi4 very soon mostly from amazon or aliexpress.

Yeah, so in my case I used a proxy. Some from my office would be visiting the country from the US so I shipped the items to him. For anyone trying to dabble into SBC aliexpress is a great resource especially for the raspberrypi. I think the RPi4 is a great uppgrades. The increased ram options, true native ethernet and 5GB capable usb3 x 2 usbA makes it just perfect. You just have to wait for community support and you are good to go. The pi4 offers great options for running a home NAS

Lost its way, just a lot of garbage talk.
As much as Google+ wasn't really relevant, I sort of miss the place now. There are some tech communities I used to follow.
About the forum, do you have any suggestion(s)?

I mean the whole platform itself, two most useful things are missing: Proper comment tracking (like Reddit) and Direct Messages.

(New to NL)
Really Wonderful idea.

I haven't heard of "Helios4" until reading this post.

I'm actually running Open Media Vault on a RPi 3B+ with 125Gb SSD storage, yeah i know is small size, but that is the only SSD that i have and it was a good start for a proof of concept. I set it up to connect to my Glo MIFI which i then access either through FTP or SFTP with ES File Explorer (Android), FTP Manager (iOS) and my Laptop... and yes it is a slow connection tongue i get a max of 1mbps when uploading to it and cuts off when the file is large, but it streams the same video file simultaneously on 2 devices seamlessly grin.

I'm not using a larger HDD because of power cutouts. Sectors on the drive can become corrupted over time or the needle could weld itself to the disk, An SSD on the other hand uses less power consumption, faster read write speeds compared to my HDD and no noise; ill be going for a larger SSD(s) on RAID 0 or 1 later on. I am also finalizing a rechargeable 18650 battery backup system that kicks in ones power goes out.
All to be housed inside a salvaged Desktop PSU case. I was able to recover the fan for the case, so i have very good airflow over the RPi (the whole case gets really cold actually lipsrsealed)

Also looking forward to getting my hands on a RPi4, the true Gigabit, upgraded RAM and USB 3.0 ports sealed the deal for me grin.

My interest for Linux started in 2011 when I started compiling custom roms and learning Perl programming.I get most infos about Ubuntu Linux from xda developers.

One obvious advantage is its faster than python and shell langs. You can do almost any task with it.I find myself using it because of web programming,GUI,games, database/system admin and so many others....just google it.

See some used in the link.

https://perl-begin.org/uses/

There are two Perl languages which are
Perl 5 and Perl 6 now called Raku.Petl is for lazy guys who don't wanna write code...almost every thing you wanna do has been done by people which is in a repository called CPAN....just go there and copy any code module and it's free But iusr warn u,Perl has so many syntax that may make yours eyes bleed.

What's the specs of your system?

Anyway you can install lubuntu or ubuntu mate. Lubuntu is lighter, but you will have a little more functionality with Ubuntu mate

I think its adequate, I want to use a minimal os like xfce or smaller just to

But i5 16gb ram, 256 GB it's my work laptop and it's on windows but dont worry it requires me to switch off a policy, so decided to use my Linux personal system , I rarely use my personal laptop because I'm used to using only 1 laptop at a time
