It was built on the location of the former zoo. However, i personally feel they could have turned that land into a huge park! Enugu (just like all other SE states) are fond of building in any available land they see within the city...all they’re thinking of is profit! See what they did to the former polo park!

A city needs at least one large park that can help it breathe and mop up the carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as serve as a place where families can go to chill, excercise or bond!

Oga m,

You are right about creating parks. My take on this is that it's not a bad thing if we re-conceptualize Enugu as new emerging mega city with new borders stretching from 9th mile to Esut junction on PH expressway. If you imagine a bigger city, then you can insert huge public parks within this land space and it will very well serve the city.

Although we fail to see that the city is developing from all it's fringes and not planning, it does not stop the ongoing expansion of the city anyways. Not too long ago, we didn't consider Abakpa, Emene or Independence Layout Phase II as part of Enugu. Today, it is clear that those areas are well within the larger Enugu metropolis. So, we can continue thinking of Enugu an starting from New Haven to Asata and killing ourselves with the headache of how to fit everything within there, it doesn't stop the reality that today's Enugu now stretches from Emene to Ituku ozalla.

I don't agree completely that it was trolls that drove people like Spyder away from this thread .
If there was any meaningful development going on in Enugu state, the updates from it would have kept people like him and the thread alive.
The Anambra thread is still thriving despite trolls derailing it every now and then.

Spyder is in the real estate sector and he is at the forefront of development. He also travels around to various places and witness the developments going on mostly by private individuals. There is always something to upload whether it’s private or government investment.

The problem is still on those who are hell bent on destroying the thread. I don’t care how strong minded that you think you are but it can be very discouraging and disappointing to see people trolling your threads when you spend so much time and resources taking pictures.

I don’t blame him for choosing to move on.

Assuming the Akanu Ibiam airport is opened in April 2020, it would be a dream to see the likes of Emirates and KLM flying to Enugu. The reason I suspect, why they declined the Aviation ministry's invitation to add Enugu to their route network is due to the frankly below average facilities at the airport. Those airlines have certain standards which can't be compromised.

Moreover, it should be economically viable for Air Peace to serve Dubai, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Kuala Lumpur, Atlanta, and London; from Enugu. The aircraft of choice could be the A350-900 and/or B787-9. The Atlanta and London services may be three weekly flights during the European summer and Christmas periods; with reduced services during off peak periods.

I admire you optimism even against the odds, but this increased activity you envision for AIIA when it reopens is still up in the air (pardon the pun lipsrsealed)!

These works they're doing, will it see to the eventual completion of the abandoned terminal; will it install night-landing facilities (like Kano, Lagos and Abuja have) so planes can land at night? I imagine these are some of the major issues keeping the airlines you mentioned away from AIIA till date. But above all, if the aviation authorities -and by extension, the fed' gov't- isn't interested in getting more int'l airlines to serve AIIA, then it ain't gonna happen no matter the amount and quality of upgraded facilities available!

The minister promised to install airfield lighting. So, when the airport is reopened it will be able to accommodate night flights

My brother,

THANK God for Igbos who still reason without sentiment like you.

I often wonder if the quality of the Igbo intelligentsia reasoning have collectively depreciated over the years.

We know the Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika campaigned for most of Buhari's first term to shut Enugu Intl. airport down.

We were told that:
1. There were obstacles around the airport jeopardizing safety.
2. The runway was not good and was not up to the minimum 3.5 km.
3. The airport did not have night landing facilities and did not have a completed taxiway as a standard International airport
4. The international terminal building was still uncompleted. Thus the over crowding of the current domestic terminal.

Now that the airport has been closed down and Buhari graciously approved the whopping N10 billion naira requested to fix everything, we expect that the issues will be fixed once and for all. Not the promises of Mr A or Mr B.

The Minister might mean well, but all remain to be seen due to the type of toxic politics played with public facilities if they are located in Eastern Nigeria. Time shall tell if they were sincere or not.

A potential setback...
[b]Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, may not open soon as expected despite resolving safety concerns that led to its shut down by the Federal Government.

This is so because a fresh crisis over ownership of adjoining land at the airport is threatening its reopening.

There is a land contest between a private estate developer, Arch. J.J Emejulu and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), which, according to the airport authorities, may jeopardise moves to reactivate the airport.

The land dispute is based on series of unconnected court cases in which Arch. J.J Emejulu is seeking to exercise ownership right over spaces of land in the vicinity of the airport.

A source at the airport also stated that conflict between the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Air Force attached to FAAN over land ownership is also there.

The source stated that the airport might be permanently closed down if there is encroachment into the reserved space.

According to an FAAN official at Enugu, the contested land is located at the takeoff end of the airport, and would breach safety headroom for planned extension of the runway.

In response to enquiries on the encroachment, the Chairman of House Committee on Aviation, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, declared that nobody would stand in the way to reopening the airport as scheduled, warning those fighting for land to stop sabotaging the interest of the Southeast zone.

A construction firm, PW Limited, has been deployed to reconfigure and reconstruct the runway to accommodate wide body aircraft including the Boeing 787 and dreamliner series.

National Aviation Management Agency (NAMA) has also announced commencement of work on airfield lighting and safety systems as well as on modernization of the terminal building and new reopening deadline was fixed for April 2020.

The slowpoke called Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has ruined Enugu State. Years ago I predicted that the Buffoon will be a failure. Today he is not just a failure but a monumental one.

Enugu will not recover in the next 20 years from the curse of Ugwuanyi's leadership.

One question no one is asking is what he is doing with Enugu State money.

Look around you, no road, no school, no health care, no agricultural investment, zero innovation, no job creation. Look at Ebonyi and the progress they are making. Enugu keeps going from bad to worse.

Ugwuanyi has not built one standard kilometer road apart from Opi-Nsukka Road after 6 years in office. I am talking about a standard road that can last for 10 years.

Ugwuanyi has proved that governorship rotation does not always work. Power should have been taken away from the slowpoke after the first 4 years but we sacrificed our common good at the alter being fair to a people who don't deserve it.

Just few years Sullivan transformed Enugu so much that every Nigerian wanted to visit Enugu. Today, no one knows that Enugu exits.

F**k Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He deserves not to live.

I hope Enugu people will learn.

Nwanne, all this n'isi ututu a? grin

You see the man for your dream? grin

Anyways, while I share your sentiment, I think your choice of words is anything but cool.

Keep in mind: He's not reading these comments, so calm down and make your point.

Equity and fairness are critical in a democratic setting as they engender peace and inclusion.

It's a good thing that Nsukka people have had their share of Enugu governance. Hopefully, it will significantly reduce rancour and the agitation for Adada State.

If Enugu people didn't die under Ugwuanyi of first four years in office, they'd definitely survive the twilight of his administration. Before you say Jack Robinson, the man will be so out of office.

My fear is that his successor may use his lacklustre outing as a yardstick for performance measurement in the state.

The worst governor Enugu had was chimaroke as the man was so clannish that he moved everything to his hometown and forgot other places in Enugu.. Don't drag his people into your madness..

Ugwuanyi presents Enugu’s N169.56 billion 2020 budget proposal

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, on Tuesday, presented a budget proposal of N169.6 billion (N169,557,658,300) for the 2020 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly for consideration and passage.

Presenting the budget proposal tagged: “Budget of Responsive and Accountable Governance”, Mr Ugwuanyi disclosed that his administration through the budget intends to strategically consolidate and expand on the solid foundation already laid in creating an environment that encourages full development of human and natural resources.

The governor stated that the essence is to rekindle social services as well as build vital infrastructure in all sectors of the economy across the state, revealing that the implementation of the recommendations of the 12 sectoral ad-hoc committees, constituted at the inception of his second term administration, on review of different sectors of governance for advancement of good governance and optimized service delivery, were aptly captured in the 2020 budget proposal.

He disclosed that the revenue and expenditure performance in the 2019 budget was a huge success as his administration recorded unique achievements in infrastructure, education, health, electrification, security, urban beautification, transport, water, women and youth empowerment, commerce and industry, housing among others.

Governor Ugwuanyi pointed out that National Inflation Rate of 10.8%, National Real GDP Growth of 2.93%, Oil Production Benchmark of 2.18 million barrels per day, Oil Price Benchmark of $55 per barrel and an Exchange Rate of N305 per US Dollar, were the macro and micro-economic indicators that informed his administration’s projections for the 2020 budget proposal.

He stated that the state has in the past four years maintained steady economic growth, which was largely because of political stability in the state, stronger and more efficient institutions of governance, improved security of lives and property, provision of critical infrastructure, consistent economic policy and commitment to fiscal discipline.

The governor further disclosed that these remarkable achievements have created opportunities for private sector participation in the economic development process of the state.

Governor Ugwuanyi noted that the outcome of the reform initiatives coupled with robust fiscal administration and the reorganisation of Enugu State Internal Revenue Service have ensured substantial increase in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which he said has maintained an annual average growth rate of 11 per cent since 2015 and current figure of N27 billion – the highest in the history of the state.

READ ALSO: 2020 BUDGET: ANAMBRA LAWMAKERS, COMMISSIONER, LAMENT LOW BUDGETARY ALLOCATION TO ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE
He explained that the proposed N169.56 billion budget size was 55.27 per cent higher than the 2019 budget of N109.199 billion because of “our continuing commitment to meeting the development expectations of our people through the provision of critical infrastructure in virtually all the sectors, including but not limited to roads, housing, education, health, agriculture, rural electrification, water, transport, women and youth empowerment”.

The governor further revealed that out of the N169.56 billion budget proposal, recurrent expenditure is N68.79 billion, representing 40.57 per cent of the total budget, noting that “this is slightly higher than the 2019 figure of N65.71 billion by 4.69 per cent”.

He said the capital expenditure stood at N100.77 billion, representing 59.43 per cent of the budget, which is above the 2019 figure of N43.93 billion by 129.4 cent.

Highlighting the key deliverables of the 2020 capital budget, Mr Ugwuanyi, stated that the state government, among numerous others, plans to construct the first Enugu Underpass/Flyover at Nike Lake Resort/ Nike Road T-junction, Enugu, construct and reconstruct more urban and rural roads, upgrade and remodel the Hotel Presidential, Enugu as well as enhance facilities at Nike Lake Resort and complete the construction, landscaping and furnishing of the International Conference Center (ICC), Enugu.

Others include the reconstruction of Michael Okpara Square, Enugu with provision of additional pavilions, construction of Adada Campus of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Nsukka, operationalization of the Enugu Medical Diagnostic Centre and full implementation of the Universal Health Coverage in the state, establishment of Small and Medium Scale Industries in the 17 LGAs and the upgrading and revitalization of Primary Health Care facilities across the 17 Local Government Areas to ensure quick and easy access to healthcare delivery in the remote villages, etc.

“We have done a lot to make Enugu a destination of choice for credible investors. Under my watch, Enugu State has transited from its 2014 World Bank Ease of Doing Business ranking as 27th out of 37 States (including FCT, Abuja), to an enviable ranking as the 2nd State in Ease of Starting Business and 3rd State in Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria in the 2018 World Bank Ease of Doing Business sub-national ranking. For this feat, Enugu State was honoured on 3rd April, 2019 by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council at Abuja. We are committed to sustaining this position and possibly improving on it in the coming years”, the governor said.
