greatbrian: This is how it goes..the first person that bought it as tokunbo will be the first registration on the data of Lagos state vehicle register. If someone bought it from him later, that person becomes second owner.. he will be given the photovopy of the original documents of the car by the first owner. owner. Also he will hand him the original copy of the custom papers .this and the photocopies of the original papers from first owner will enable the second buyer to do what we call change of ownership. ...that means new owner wanna inherit the car properly according to our laws. After doing change of ownership and is properly done...he will be giving a new plate number and the first plate number returned to the first owner cos is still in his name. On the Lagos state vehicle registration data base, the second owners name and details will appear after the first owners name and details. .However in some cases most people didn't do the right thing. They just went ahead and remove one letter or number out of the chassis number and 're register it as if the bought it tokunbo....in this case is criminal and could land the person in trouble with police... |

A registered car will show up on the database.. If you need to change the ownership - you will need an agreement doc signed by you and the current owner.. Then you re-license the car with a plate number that is registered to you and a proof of ownership that is in your name with the name on your plate number.. |
Re: Can A Nigerian Car Be Registered More Than Once? by novexme(m): 8:40pm On Nov 12, 2019 |
Registration before isn't the issue, it can be registered and then sold, but if the seller sold it to you as tokunbo then you must request a refund. Buying an already registered car isn't a crime as long as you have the necessary documents and change of ownership to proof the last owner whose name is on the documents sold it to you. Best of luck though. *Vehicles can be registered without change of ownership sef. They do it well* as long as proof of payment with documents and the car isn't reported as stolen. 1 Like 1 Share |

In my opinion, I think the OP is a crafty human being. He doesn't really give a fucck about you guys opinion. I think what played out is this; OPs mother requested him as her son to help her source a tokumbor car. But OP being crafted decided to buy a Naija used to make more mulla. Now he is worried about what might come up during registration. (More likely) Its either the above is in play or OP is still in the process of buying the car. So he needs to weigh options as to perfect his plan of conning an innocent woman of a tokumbor car and getting her a good Nigerian used but still make enough raba by the side Or a stolen car is about to be washed and he came up with that SOB story (I doubt this though) If its not any of the above, THEN MAYBE AM RUNNING CRAZY 5 Likes |

1.Register the car with a new plate number. 2.if you want to retain the old plate number, use the previous registration paper then do change of ownership |

greatbrian:yes but first d roadsafety officer need to get d information/phone number on their data base and call to confirm if d vehicle was truly sold or stolen. After confirmation they deregister d Chasis no of d vehicle from d current plate no nd u buy a new one and they register it as new with yr poc (proof of ownership) |

nurey: Boss, please my own question is quite different from this. If a Tokunbo car arrives Nigeria and custom duty fully paid, for how long can it be used in Nigeria before it must be registered. |
Re: Can A Nigerian Car Be Registered More Than Once? by pattybf(f): 9:10pm On Nov 12, 2019 |
I believe you are aware of what you bought, a Nigerian used vehicle. Do yourself and mum a favour by doing d right thing, which is getting a change of ownership/ reregistration. Like Nurey explained, a vehicle can be acquired n reregistered by different owners, there is no crime in that. People buys Nigerian used vehicles daily n reregisters them. If mum loves d vehicle, simply tell her d status. |

Even if u possess a change of ownership form with other important document for registration, the name of the first owner fixed with that car VIN can never be erased or changed. This is the main reason why im planning to sell my nigerian used car again. |

Toceenay: you can drive it on Nigerian soil for 3months without plate number. you can drive it forever with dealer plate number. so if you are into car sales, adviceable to get a dealer plate number so you can drive tokunbo car as long as you want until it is sold 4 Likes |

brodalikeme: from what I gathered from the op I am guessing he bought the car for his mum to whao her but due to some financial constraints he can't afford tokunbo. not that his mum gave him money for tokunbo and he bought naija used, I wanted to ask but sometimes it's better for one to not insinuate negatively. |

Better be careful Bro. Get your documentations right to void problem. If you are having problem registering a car then something is definitely wrong. A lot of people give excuses for buying stolen car, moreso you mentioned that the deal was too good to be true. Your mum is involved in this, remember 1 Like |

EasyPeazy: Young ma your assertions are so wrong. I saw the car here on nairaland. Auto section. And I show my mum who loves it immediately coz of the colour etc. don't need to describe it even the guy who posted the pix didn't know its not tokunbo and I travelled down to lagos to check the car. It was perfect looked like tokunbo infact it was tokunbo the customs papers everything was perfect I did a text drive and we agreed on the price it was after payment I was called by the owner of the dealership company who gave me the number plates s and former particulars. I was shocked etc and I called the attention of the guy who posted the car and he was confused himself. You don't need to think everyone have a criminal mindset even if you do. And the only reason am hiding the status of the car from my mum is she has big trust issues with Nigerian used cars due to past experience and no matter how i sweet tongue it she might never touch the car. |
Re: Can A Nigerian Car Be Registered More Than Once? by easyniyi(m): 10:51pm On Nov 12, 2019 |
The change of ownership is the issue. It will bring things out that the vehicle has been registered before. Sorry bro but without the change of ownership can the vehicle still be registered without anyone finding out there and then that it has been registered before. Thanks What you will do is change of ownership without plate, if you do change of ownership with plate it will take month/months before the plate number come out and the will be the real issue with your mother. This is applicable to Lagos |

A car can be reregistered since the plate no is now attached to the owner and not the car. Not up to 3 months but within 10 working days. Make sure you get the Receipt of purchase, means of identification of the old owner and a transfer of ownership duly sign by the old owner and the new owner. Don’t know if other state but will do it here in Lagos. But pls inform your mummy no matter what. If you don’t mind you may contact me on 08030683994 for further guidance |

greatbrian: Too many stolen cars around dude. Do your due diligence well. That you are given all the original paper doesn’t mean... meanwhile, you sound desperate to swindle your mum. Be careful. |
Re: Can A Nigerian Car Be Registered More Than Once? by greatbrian(m): 11:56pm On Nov 12, 2019 |
soyemi: am not planning to swindle her bro. The only reason I don't want her to know its used is because she will have trust issues with the car. I have all the originals and even I already went for a police report etc. If she gets to know the car is used, she will automatically believe its not worth it at all. And as for the dealer, he was even the one who went for the police report with me etc |
