A bill seeking the establishment of the South-West Development Commission scaled first reading on the floor of the Senate on Thursday. The bill was sponsored by the senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Ibikunle Amosun, in conjunction with all the 37 South-West senators in the red chamber. Amosun, who is the immediate past governor of Ogun State, told journalists that the proposed legislation was solely for the development of the South-West geopolitical zone. He argued that the South-West geopolitical zone was bringing a lot of revenue to the federation account and that it would only be proper for it to benefit in terms of development. He said, “Clearly, it (the bill) is for the development of our people and our area. If a part of a whole is not well, then the whole will not be well. Clearly, every part of Nigeria should feel concerned about the need to develop their place. “If all of us develop our place, of course we will have a beautiful country that everybody will be proud of. “So to that extent, this is not just my bill, it is being co-sponsored by all of us (Yoruba senators) from the South-West. “Look at just the contribution of Lagos State to Nigeria as a nation. So, I think there should be some kind of special status but not just for Lagos alone now. “Of course, we are saying whatever happens in Lagos happens in Ogun State. For me, Ogun State is the industrial hub of Nigeria based on the population that we have and what we are contributing to Nigeria. “We don’t want any place to be left behind. But in doing that, we should not be oblivious of the fact that we need to continue to develop too and that is why we are bringing this bill.” Amosun said the proposed bill was different from the one sponsored by Senator Gbenga Ashafa in the 8th Senate but promised to incorporate it in his own. Lawan swears in Olujimi Meanwhile, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Thursday, administered the oath of office on Senator Biodun Olujimi as senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District. Olujimi replaced the former Senate spokesperson, Adedayo Adeyeye, whose election was nullified by both the Ekiti State Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna recently. Lawan, after the lawmaker had been sworn in, called for unity among all members of the upper chamber. He added that Olujimi’s victory brought the number of female senators to eight in the upper chamber. https://www.nairapark.com/news/1573803339/south-west-senators-sponsors-development-commission-bill https://cdn.punchng.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/20030708/Ibikunle-Amosun.jpg |

North central deserves a development commission more than some regions... with states like Kogi, benue, kwara, Niger and Jos plus the all menace of fulani herdsman and incompetent Governors.. But am afraid, they will still squander and loot the money again |

At the end of the day, every region will have a commission to foster regional development on paper. Apart from additional bureaucracy, duplication of government agencies, and opportunity for political cronies to further milk the country dry, nothing tangible will come out of the proliferation of development commission. Obasanjo created NNDC since 2000 and I don’t think the Niger Delta is more developed than other regions today. The SW development commission is a direct response to the SE development commission bill being pushed by Igbos. Very soon, North west and North central lawmakers will also come up with their own and the argument will be the same. |

What is good for the goose is supposed to be good for the gander except in this case, there isn’t enough to go round. Whether Nigerians like it or not, we must restructure this entity, decentralize Govt or go our separate ways ![]() |

This people have forgotten their brothers in Kwara and Kogi. It's good they are asking for such buh i think priority is asking for our brothers to be merged with us at all cost. Then we can watch the development altogether everywhere. What's the essence of developing only SW while abandoning Kwara and our part in Kogi to ruins. I don't think it's making sense. |

Does the Yoruba have a problem with Ndigbo? In the 8th Senate, immediately that Senate passed that bill, the SW came up with the bill so as to frustrate the signing. This time around, just last week cos Buhari didn't sign the last bill on the SEDC Stella Oduah has reintroduced the bill , just from the blues the SW has remembered their own development commission. The truth is both will fail this time. The SW never thought of that but all their actions is geared towards killing the bill for the SE. The Igbo have always supported the Yoruba, I don't know why they will want to always frustrate the Igbo |

This is a regional bill There's no how they will do it to get those two state involve Because they are outside the southwest. The senators from kwara state and kogi can only support the bill. However when the commission is finally approved nobody will deny kwara or kogi from benefiting from the commission. Kapilta: |

seunmsg:So we all agree that the SW bill is meant to undermine the SEDC bill. But we have yorubas like oyatz claiming that it is the SE who undermines the SW when it is actually the other way round. Now who is undermining who? |

LabDNA:Before the south east bill, we already have the NDDC and the NEDC. Is the south east bill an attempt to undermine the already existing regional development commissions? The South west bill is not to undermine the south east bill. The south west also feel they need the commission to foster regional development just like south east. |

johnmartus:you didn't get the message. The yoruba people of Kogi have been asking for long to be merged with their brethrens in ekiti state for long or create a new state for them and merge with sw buh the fg paid them no attention same as Kwara. Why can't all the yoruba senators come together in the house and support their cry and move that they be added to one region and then we can all overlook the development together under one region development commission. You grab. Some kwarans love to introduce themselves as northerners because they are more used to them than their brethrens. Same as some yoruba kogites. It's appaling. |

celeiyke:The industrial muscle of South west is in Ogun state not lagos and shouldn't we have a development agency that uses money generated from tarifs at the port in lagos to develop the rest of the South west ? |

Every body seeks development commission. The question is why can't we restructure, do a co-federal system of govt so each region develop at its own pace? |
| Re: South-west Senators Sponsors Development Commission Bill For Zone by mercyville: 1:07pm On Nov 15, 2019 |
I do not know why the North fears restructuring so much.In the long run, every region will ask for a development commission which literally means that we need to restructure.. |

celeiyke: Also, there is a bill currently before the Senate for the creation of a North West Development Commission. The bill was sponsored by Jibrin Barau, a Kano State Senator, and was read for the first time on the floor of the Senate on December 13, 2018.Must everything be tribal? You are looking out for yourself and others are doing the same thing. The North West did the same thing so was it also against ibo people? When Lagos asked for special status as the only state shouldering Nigerian's economic and human burden, your ibo reps massively voted against it and I remember about people on NL rejoicing and celebrating. This commission thing is just rubbish that shouldn't be allowed or tolerated, it's all another avenue to loot. Aunti stella is and her SE colleagues are collecting constituency project funds that they can not show you and your people what they are doing with the funds, now they want another looting scheme to control via their cronies. Their cronies will be the board members, contracts and consult money will go to their proxy companies and so on just like NDDC. This foolishness must stop. |

Yes i got your message. If the people of okun, ibolo, igbomina and Ekiti really serious about their demand, they should petition their representatives in the red chamber and green chamber.... Then southwest senators can suppor them don't expect southwest senators to move the motion first . Dino melaye is there Sunday alimi is there, senator lola ashiru is there and many other. Kapilta: |
