how many monikers here have said we are Giants of Africa who should dominate all the time? the comparison is in order because these countries are at similar or almost similar level as us if they all struggled to beat benin us getting past the same team shouldn't be a thing to gripe about

darkelf:

Why should I compare Naija to Cameroon or Ghana or morocco? Am I a Moroccan, Cameroonian or Ghanaian?

If we can call ourselves giants of Africa, we should dominate.

ogbeni Algeria has had good players for some years now. if not for mother luck the CIV would have knocked them out in the quarters of AFCON

darkelf:

Oga, quote me directly if you have something to say. Stop this backdoor thing.

I'm not French and thus they have the right to be mediocre and yes, I will make excuses for them.

But for Naija, No way. We have got to be better and yes it is possible. Algeria got transformed almost overnight by a determined coach. I'd like to see that from Rohr. Won't be surprised of Algeria makes it to the quarter final in Qatar.

LIFELINE For NIGERIA As SOUTHGATE Snubs TOMORI AGAIN In England Win

Published: November 15, 2019

The NFF have been handed a lifeline over their pursuit of young Chelsea defender, Fikayo Tomori after England manager Gareth Southgate failed to utilise him in their European Championship qualifier versus Montenegro on Thursday evening.

Tomori, 21 was on the radar of the Nigerian higher-ups prior to his call-ups to play for England, and could have become cap-tied for life to the Three Lions if he played even for a minute in the big win at Wembley.

The dual-eligible defender was an unused substitute in each of England's last two qualification games before yesterday's meeting with Montenegro, and he watched on yet again for the entirety of the game, with Joe Gomez, James Maddison and Tammy Abraham coming off the bench as Southgate rang the changes.

Thus, he is clearly behind all of Michael Keane, Tyrone Mings, John Stones and Harry Maguire in the pecking order of defenders for England.

His international limbo could however, change by Sunday 17th when the Three Lions play Kosovo in a dead rubber, having scaled through the series as group winners, and Southgate could give most of his first team players some rest then.

Anglo-Nigerian striker Abraham who became cap-tied to England on October 11th opened his senior international goal account in the 7-0 victory over The Brave Falcons.

Leave matter, Rohr has made his name as far as African football is concerned. Sack him today and watch African teams scramble after him with juicy contracts.

Now back to the point. I did mention the euro nations league and compared to their WC 2018 performance. Based on that comparison, they have slowed down....hope you get my point now.

"The former Arsenal man is the embodiment of the modern number 10: able to play in tight spaces, flourishing in crevices of the game, a prompter and one through whom the game flows effortlessly.

His ability to play the first pass, and up the tempo of the game with quick thinking and improvisation, should be celebrated. He has been consistently one of Nigeria's best performers over the past two years, and has made a home for himself in the hole behind the striker.

Yet, it is not uncommon to find people complain that he ought to do more, misunderstanding the essence of a team sport, which is to have a strong and consistent flow, each unit serving its purpose toward the advancement of the group.

Iwobi will probably never dribble gratuitously to thrill the crowd, or produce that one moment if devilry we can embellish and tell our children by the light of the full moon, but he does precisely what the game requires him to do at all times. It may not always come off, and he is by no means perfect, but he is the number 10 we have right now". Culled from this article.

Four talking points from the Nigeria vs Benin game
opera.com

Super Eagles managed to soar over Benin Republic 2-1in their opening game of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers played at the magnificent Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo on Wednesday.

Though we didn’t have the best TV coverage of the match but one could tell It was a really good performance from the boys, responding well after going a goal down early on.

Unusually slow start

Stephane Sessegnon put the visitors ahead within the first five minutes of play before Victor Osimhen restored parity for Rohr’s men a minute before half-time. Samuel Kalu then scored from a worldie of a run to give the West Africans brightest of start to the qualifying campaign.
Here are my thoughts from the game
Unusual shaky start from Super Eagles
As at the time the goal was scored by the visitors, Gernot Rohr’s men were basically at sleep.

We did the kick-off, passed the ball around a few times before losing it through Ola Aina . From the resulting throw, the Squirrels scored. Jamilu Collins was easily beaten by Benin’s Jodel Dossou, who then nicely set up Sessegnon for the opener.

Don’t forget I told you before the game that we cannot afford mistakes in the game. The first and only one we did led to the away side’s goal.
This was odd from them based on their past two games where they have started brightly by scoring first. I was shocked to see the Benin side stroll into our backline to score.

Joe Aribo is a gem

Aribo will be here for a long time. Everything he did in the game was to perfection. From his touches to the tackles he made and then his movement with the ball was magisterial.
He could have even got a goal early in the second half but his powerful low shot was well saved by the Benin goalkeeper Fabien Famolle.
Aribo played his position well and made simple important passes to set the ball rolling for the guys in the attack. With the way he is playing at Rangers and for the Super Eagles, I do fear for Oghenekaro Etebo who has been the partner of Wilfred Ndidi in that role for some years now.
He was simply unplayable in the game.

French league combo

Victor Osimhen and Samuel Kalu scored in either half to help the Super Eagles to victory. Osimhen scored at the dot of half time to draw us level before Kalu scored from an enterprising and mesmerizing run in the second half to secure our first three points.

Kalu came alive in the second half after a subdued first; had Jean Ngouchi for toast on countless occasions, before he scored what would be the winning goal in the second half.
I was particularly impressed with Osimhen’s work rate, movements both on and off the ball. His hold-up play has to be the pick of the qualities that he showed all through the game.
His presence in attack helped the likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Kalu and Alex Iwobi flourish in the game. Every time they played to his strengths, it produced meaningful and productive attacks for the Super Eagles.

Uyo or nowhere

Even after going behind early on, the fans supported and cheered the players all through it. The players also rewarded them with a victory.
I think if the Super Eagles cannot play in Uyo, then we should not play anywhere else then. This is unarguably the best football pitch in Nigeria as of today.

If others cannot better this wonderful edifice then we should forget taking them elsewhere. The boys were simply at home throughout the game.

Rohr has got a marvellous bunch of talent at his disposal and I believe he should be doing more with them.

However, it is the much-needed start for this youthful side in the qualifiers, I think another result this weekend in Lesotho will keep them on track and focused in the race to reach Cameroon 2021.

KANTE did played yesterday though.

France had qualified before yesterday game like you typed and they don't normally play a domineering football during qualifiers.

Inspite of the retinue of superstars usually on parade for France, they always struggle during qualifiers.

FRANCIS UZOHO: Nigeria keeper says knee operation 'a success'

By Oluwashina Okeleji

Football Writer, France

15 Nov

Nigeria international goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has undergone successful surgery after sustaining knee ligament damage last month.

Uzoho, 20, suffered the injury after the hour mark
during the Super Eagles's 1-1 friendly draw with Brazil in Singapore and had to be carried off on a stretcher.

His Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia confirmed the extent of the injury and that the Nigerian was facing an extended lay-off.

"And it was a success. I'm grateful to every prayer and good wishes said. Even the hidden prayers said on my behalf," Uzoho wrote on social media.
"I'm deeply grateful. Now let the healing begin."

He is expected to be out for at least six months and the injury comes as a setback for Uzoho, who had regained his starting place and had been picked for both of Nigeria's most recent friendly internationals against Ukraine and Brazil.

In search of regular football, Uzoho had returned for a second loan spell in Cyprus by joining Omonia Nicosia in July from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna.

A lack of top-flight football had cost him his place as Nigeria's number one keeper ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and consequently went into the tournament as third choice behind Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

Capped 16 times by Nigeria, he played all three matches as the Super Eagles were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup in the group stage.

He made a solitary appearance at this summer's Nations Cup in the win over Tunisia as the West African nation sealed a third place finish in Egypt

SAMUEL KALU Reveals His Two Best Positions; Partnership With Bordeaux Pal Josh Maja

Published: November 15, 2019

Samuel Kalu has revealed that his two best playing positions are the support striker and winger roles.

Predominantly a right winger, he has been deployed as a left winger by manager Gernot Rohr in his last two matches for the national team, with Villarreal's Samuel Chukwueze playing as an inverted winger.

Kalu showed his versatility by playing as a right wing-back in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa held in Johannesburg last year.

Speaking to our colleagues Naija Footballers via YouTube , Kalu said :''I can play both sides of the flank, I also play as a supporting striker.''

The Bordeaux number 10 went on to reveal that he has a great relationship with Super Eagles teammate Josh Maja on the pitch.

''It's all good, sometimes if we play together, we work together, he always tells me to give him the crosses.

''Anytime both of us are playing, he will know that he will have a lot of crosses, he has to put himself in a good position.''

Kalu netted the game-winning goal for the Super Eagles as they came from a goal down to beat Benin 2-1 in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Wednesday.

Yes very true.

COAST IS CLEAR Didier Drogba was offered Chelsea coaching job in summer but rejected it in bid to become Ivory Coast FA chief

15 Nov 2019, 14:00

DIDIER DROGBA turned down a "perfect" coaching job with Chelsea because he has his heart set on taking over as president of the Ivory Coast FA .

The Blues legend confirmed that he had the chance to link up with former team-mate Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Didier Drogba has chosen his country over a 'perfect' role at Chelsea

Drogba , 41, is eyeing his next move after announcing his retirement following a short spell with Phoenix Rising last year.

And he met club representatives to outline his plans if he is picked to replace Augustin Sidy Diallo.

He said: "I had an offer to stay at Chelsea where everything would be perfect and conditions are met.

"But I want to help Ivorian football because I love it!

"I am a leader, and my vision is bigger than just the simple role of being a coach. A coach has an impact on a club – but I want to have an impact on an entire nation.

"I want us to re-think football, with a nationwide vision, so we can develop the game here. The Ivory Coast has a glorious footballing past
