My Car Was Incorrectly Registered By The Previous Owner. Advice by Guest911(op): 10:08pm On Nov 12, 2019
I bought a Toyota Camry 2008 last August. And the vehicle papers expired August too.

So I got to the VIO office to do brand new license plate and after cross checking, the chassis number on the car did not tally with the one on the current vehicle license. Even the engine number is completely wrong. Basically the current license doesn’t hold accurate info about the car. The only legit doc that tally with the car is the custom paper.

I’m not exactly sure what to do in this case, I’m thinking of a fresh registration but what if the previous owner made the mistakes but the other owner he got the car from correctly registered the car?

You didn't have to make a silly comment. Better not to let others know how ignorant you are than speak.

In the end, it's your ignorance, your problem.

It can be corrected by the VIO officials. They will only require the customs paper to verify. It might however cost as much as a new registration so i would opt for a new one if i were in your shoes

I hope you have the sale agreement given by the previous owner or have you done change of ownership?

Seems the car no dey travel interstate, those highway boys for don milk you tire! cheesy

The best option is for u to obtain a new plate number. But make sure u cross check d chassis number directly from d vehicle and d engine number also.

Re register the car on your name since you are in custody of the original copies of the custom papers

Previous registration is invalid and cannot be transfer

I realized some Nigerians do not properly register their vehicle especially its Nigerian used, if the original custom papers are available, there should be a way round it, they might register it afresh.

Re: My Car Was Incorrectly Registered By The Previous Owner. Advice by agyo(m): 7:49am On Nov 16, 2019
The Car has a history of erroneous engine number because the engine number is hidden and not every body knows where to find it. So at the point of registration, there is every tendency that the number they visibly see on the gear box is what will be captured. Police use me chop money before i got to learn where this issue is coming from during my interstate trips.

Secondly make sure u confirm if the engine was also changed before, also locate the correct engine number and make sure it is accurately captured. Otherwise u may have to visit the court for Affidavit and proceed afterwards to the Police for Police extract to effect the correct engine number.

The best thing is to make sure you do the correct one so far the custom duty is okay and concerning the engine num they might have change the engine before so if that has happen the engine num may be different but the chassis number will always tally so far is not a serious accident car from abroad that can make them change chassis
