It says a lot about the Nigerian Youths if we can't take our time to read before commenting.
As for the Light rail 2022 is a feasible date IF they really want to do it.
But it's quite disheartening that we couldn't complete a mere 27km rail project in almost 9yrs.

What now happened that the same project could not have been completed now that the military did not disrupt it. This rove it is time to stop accepting the lies these politicians sell to you. Politicians are the biggest criminal to grace the ground of the Earth, quote me anywhere. That is not to say APC is not beta than PDP in the SW. Anybody can decide whatever works for their state or region.

The project hit numerous challenges.

I have discussed some of these in other threads previously.

The project is a world Bank funded project. It is funded in tranches. Every tranche has to be guaranteed by the fg. The fg at that time. Gej administration delayed in guaranteeing the second tranche.

As stated, the project is in forex. Any project financed in forex or imported materials will be impacted by Rises in the cost of forex. The rise of forex 2014 2015 2016 impacted the project delivery. There were a lot of back and forth with ccecc

Repeated strikes. In the Badagry trade fair axis, there was constant friction between the workers and ccecc. They were always going on strike

Brownfield. Projects in built up areas are always difficult

Stop wasting your time on dead brains, from his speech you should understand his father can never own a house till he leaves the surface of this earth. That is why Tinubu who never ruled his state is the nightmare that is suffocating him.

What's your take?

Thank you for your report. It was very well presented. However I would like to fill in one or two reasons for the delay. Firstly at the time the project started, the state government had problems obtaining right of way over federal areas. This made progress very slow and led to a build up of time -cost in inventory. When Ambode took over, personal issues between him and his predecessor led to a shift in state government funding priorities as ambode sought to build his own legacy.

On the comparisons between other projects in Africa and indeed Nigeria we must bear in mind that the topography of Lagos is quite difficult quite apart from the right of way conflicts that are so common when we have different parties at federal and state level.

One of the solutions to my mind will be he reintroduction of the post war development plans which were long term and would today straddle several administrations. This would help with policy consistency.

Once again, good write up.

My brother, I am tired of excuse over the project though I can never support a take over by PDP.
First Buhari was the excuse why the project was not executed now world bank loan. If the state govt can not do it they should go n demolish what as already been built or simply suspend the construction instead of lying that it will be ready 2022. We all know this project will likely not be ready in the next 20 years.

This would have been the game changer in Lagos State as it will massively reduce the insane vehicular traffic in Lagos. Rail transport is like "Molue" in developed countries... everyone uses it.

[quote author=AutoReportNG post=84174172]It was reported in the news over the weekend that the Lagos State Government has set 2022 as the take-off year of the much-awaited Lagos Metro Rail. As good as this news may be, it is, however, embarrassing that a state like Lagos State can not complete a 27km railway line that will run from Okokomaiko-Iddo-Marina Line.

Let's quickly do a timeline review of this railway history, according to Wikipedia, these are the timelines.

- 2008: A metro is proposed for Lagos, allegedly with a completion date of 2011.
- 2009: Construction commences on the Blue Line.
- 2010: Lagos Rail Mass Transit to proceed.
- 2016: Phase I (the Blue Line from Marina to Mile 2) planned to open in December 2016.
- 2018: After an Alstom review of the project, Phase I (the Blue Line from Marina to Mile 2) is now set to open in December 2022.

The first section of the network, Phase I of the Blue Line, was originally planned to be completed in 2011. After many delays caused by funding shortfalls, the opening date was revised to 2022.

The mass transit rail project called the Blue Line awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation had suffered many delays due to the paucity of funds and other challenges. The Lagos Light Rail started 2008, same time Ethiopia started its railway and so far, they have been at the same location for the past four years.

For some of us who ply the Eko-Bridge, Leventis and Apogbon area at Lagos Island, you must have noticed some giant beams which are built close to the main bridge. The bridge belongs to the Lagos Light Rail, this is the carriage for the train that will stop at CMS.

It will be recalled that the idea of developing rapid transit in Lagos dates from 1983 with the Lagos Metroline network conceived by the Alhaji Lateef Jakande during the Second Nigerian Republic. The initial Metroline project was scrapped in 1985 by Pres. Muhammadu Buhari at a loss of over $78 million to the Lagos taxpayers. The idea of developing a light rail network for Lagos was revived by Lagos former Governor, Bola Tinubu in the early 2000s with a formal announcement of its construction in December 2003.

This initial $135 million proposal was part of the greater Lagos Urban Transportation Project to be implemented by the newly formed Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). LAMATA initially concentrated on developing a Bus Rapid Transit system, running from Mile 12 to Lagos Island. In 2008, LAMATA began also to make progress with the rail project, focusing initially on the Blue Line and the Red Line.

With over 22million people all using the road as a means of transportation says a lot about the state of our roads. Now that the Lagos State government has finally wakened up from its slumber all thanks to the traffic the people are going through daily with the bad roads which makes driving hellish for motorists, the Lagos Metro Rail will go a long in reducing hours of traffic time and also help to preserve the roads.

It will be recalled also that Abuja Light Rail Blue Line is completed, Abuja - Kaduna rail is completed, Lagos - Ibadan rail is nearing completion. All of these constructions started after the Lagos Blue Line which is in shadows of itself with no life at all.

A visit to the site shows that the workers and contractors have all abandoned the project as weeds and area boys have taken over the place. When you pass through CMS which ought to have a terminal shows nothing as the equipment of the CCECC have been moved close to Marina Statehouse.

AutoReportNG went out to capture the sights and sounds of the Lagos Light Rail, we covered the Lagos Island axis, you can be the judge. Except miracle happens, The proposed 2022 will be a facade.

All I see are excuses. The strikes, the high rate of foreign exchange, they are all the government's fault. Every falls at their doorstep. See my brother, if these were to be personal project they would have finished long ago. Look at the Dangote refinery, see the speed at which it's moving because they al have stakes in it. Some politicians complete a 10storey hotel in less than a year, some build mega schools outside the country in less than 2yrs.
So bros eh make we just forget someof these things. If they wan do am they go do am.

Anyone who has managed a project will tell you how the best laid plans often fall to shit during execution.
