This thing has been debated non-stop for years since Ojukwu said he was the one that released Awo. Unfortunately all the people (Gowon and co) who have been speaking contrary to Ojukwu's statement did not start talking about it until AFTER OJUKWU DIED... Gowon has also not written a book or memoirs for us to read and scrutinise.

My honest opinion is that the release of Awo would have been of huge PR benefit to Gowon/FG and Ojukwu. It’s a well established fact that Gowon ordered his release based on your own assertion up here.

What does Awolowo Owe Ojukwu or the Igbos at that time? Did he had any agreement with Ojukwu or the Igbos that he betrayed?

The head of states powers are limited under Regionalism. Real power lay in the Regions. That's why Gowon could not remove Ojukwu as military Governor of the Eastern Region even though Ojukwu did not recognize Gowon as head of state. Gowon who was parading himself as head of state had to meet Ojukwu in Aburi Ghana for peace talks

In reality, Gowon had no powers as head of state and the Eastern Region did not recognize him.

I was involved in an argument with a guy tonight on Nairaland and he was so brainwashed that he believed Ojukwu released Chief Awolowo from prison. Even when I tried showing him the actual prints of the August 5, 1966 edition of the New York Times Newspaper, he still doubted the truth in that assertion.

Why would Ojukwu be going for SMC meeting when Ironsi and over 300 Igbo officers had already been murdered? Why would Ojukwu go to a meeting where he could easily be slaughtered? Only a very foolish person will attend such a meeting
