It's a means of encouragement and an esprit de corps kind of thing. The least you could do is clap back.
Reminds me of my early morning jogging days at Uniben. How time flies.

As a matter of fact I have been wondering about that clap during morning exercise but I suppose is a kind of greeting since the jogger are so exhausted to greet each other

Omo the day I jogged from Hall4, down through staff quarters (SSQ), down to student affairs, down to basement, medical complex and back to hall 4, unit 1. Boy I almost perished that day . Boy its almost 10 years back.

My brother you dey learn nao. I do jog from hall4 to JSQ to basement, to student affairs, to auditorium, to SSQ, then back to hall 4(that tarred road)twice, sometimes thrice then. But then that would be after loading up on a lot of beans, the night before.
