Whoever is of the notion that only dull students make third class is obviously backward. Quite a number of vicissitude can result to this: ill health, lecturer's personal vandetta with students and even the system itself( my department feels it's a tabboo for students to ace their exams, so our results are always moderated)...
True. About the result moderation, I can relate. It's true in some federal universities. Getting a first class isn't easy, but it's not impossible either.
Anytime I see people bash first class graduates of private unis, I'm usually laughing at their ignorance.

Hello,
My candid advice for you is to stick to marketing in your PhD pursuit because you might have issue when you finally get a lecturing job.
First issue: Departmental politics and sadist: some lecturers will tackle you when you want to contest for any office....
Second issue: your foundation is economics bro management science go show you pepper oo because you didn't have BSc in management science courses..
But you if you can just complete your PhD in marketing surely you will be fine and get you desire lecturing job. Having BSc in Economics, MSc in Marketing and PhD in Management bro makes you look like Jack of all trade ooo Abroad it make work but Nigeria omo our reasoning faculty is faulty since 4BC.
Just go for marketing in your PhD pursuit and believe all well work out for your favour.

Thanks

This phenomenon is peculiar to public universities

You will enjoy the research.....it was when I started interacting with people I discovered alot of 3rd class graduates end up very successful and also very smart.....but Nigeria is a stereotype country.....once you are not what is expected of you .......that's the end
That is why the country is stagnant

I'm not guessing, first, Good first degree, without this even with your PhD forget lecturing job. If you have Master degree, they will still requested for PhD registration. You know why?? They wanted to know if you made PhD grade. Why do you think, first class always get retained by the University?? Is NUC rule not University choice. Not even College of Education or Polytechnic will employ 3rd Class even with your PhD.

My advice****** if you so desire lecturing job, as you doing your PhD programme, put in for Bsc conversion programme. A friend did so, after he face the real truth, now "he is a lecturer at one of Federal University, even with PhD in view.

The truth is, most University, ( private ) will rather force you to extra year than 3rd class nowadays.

Reason for all these University running Conversion programme which is meant for both HND / BSC 3rd holder.
Not all first class are retained

My brother, I fought that demon endlessly in the course of my undergraduate program and still ended up with a 2:1. It hurts because I knew I deserved more, but courtesy of moderation and backdoor politics, I ended up with that. I am on another academic pilgrimage and I honestly hope to fight it heads on.

Good day all,

Please I need honest advices on my career path. I made a third class in economics and applied for pgd management but got admitted to study marketing after I got the Pgd marketing I moved on to study Msc management which I made 4.0 cgpa.

Now I am about to apply for PhD management. The issue here is that I am confused if I will get a lecturer Job since I made third class and I didn't study a particular course from my bsc to PhD level.

Further more, can I get a scholarship to study for PhD with my degree in any foreign university still admitting? If there is, kindly avail me as the schools I had search have closed admission.
Thanks alot in anticipation to your kind replies.

Please which university offers PGD Marketing

The truth is that you might even be more knowledgeable than some of your mates with first class.

Please don't let the result of your first degree affect your self esteem. Go on with your PhD and make sure your works are well published on reputable journals. You'll definitely get a lecturing job.

I know that uninformed people might want to look down on you because of your 3rd class degree, but don't let that bother you. You'll always meet people like myself who understand that examination is not a true test of knowledge. Such people will appreciate what you have to offer currently without recourse to your first degree.

Yes, not all first class can be retained. Most first class nowadays are just - just first class on paper.

Do you understand the word "Prequsite "?

When it come to lecturing job, anywhere, PhD will never replace first degree with good honours.

my mum is responding to your comments. Shes an associate professor in a nigerian university. Do you know the implication of Pgd. It means balancing up where you were weak at during the first degree.

Op please dont be discouraged. Pgd means you have covered up those areas you were weak at that made you got 3rd class. I wouldnt want to mention few lecturers at OAU and other public universities with 3rd class. They are senior lectirers and professors now. Make sure you do good research worl and publish them both in reputable national and international journals. You'll surely get a job God's grace

Oga, I don't know where you got this ideology from. shocked

So stop saying what you do NOT know. There are over 170 universities in Nigeria (i.e. 48 federal universities, 43 state universities and 79 private universities). Do you want to tell me this your strange rule applies in all of them?

I know 4 people who had a 3rd class. They did their PGD and Masters', then later completed their Ph.d. One of them did his own Ph.d abroad. undecided

As I am talking to you, they are fully employed by different universities in Nigeria. One of them is even in a state-owned university. cheesy

So stop peddling theories you know nothing about, by claiming "First Class are always retained by their universities." That is a massive lie, that does not happen anywhere, anymore. Maybe in the '80s and '90s, they did so. But not anywhere, these days.

So stop those false claims that all 1st class are retained by their universities. That one is a big lie. I have 2 cousins with 1st class from their Nigerian universities. They could NOT get a job within their schools, despite their 1st class. sad

One of them was lucky to be assisted by his Dean, to get a scholarship abroad for his PG studies. The other one is still at home, writing application letters. undecided

Not everyone applies for an academic position, with just a Master's degree. There are many that apply for such posts, with a doctorate degree. So you think after getting the Ph.d, that university will still send them back to do a conversion course, again? What fallacy is this?? shocked

Private universities only recommend that people should do an extra year, if external students approach them to say they want to take this route. They do NOT force anyone to do so, especially if he/she has a Masters degree or a Ph.d already.

In fact, your post is riddled with illogical statements. I don't want to engage you further, since you lack clarity on this subject.

I beg to disagree. There are several PhD holders that are seeking for jobs iin Nigeria. I know a good number of them personally.
I agree that there are Ph.d holders searching for jobs. I even know one, personally that is job hunting at the moment.

But some of those Ph.d holders searching for jobs, do not want to lecture in a university. They want to work in multinationals or local conglomerates.

Ask them how many universities they applied to, at home and abroad for teaching jobs, and see what kind of answers they give you.

That's crazy. It's sad when your potential is being canned because of insecurity of our institutions.
Crazy.
That's why private universities have my confidence any time.
One day, in school, the department legit changed our grades.
The result had been posted in the faculty (law) but when we checked our portals, it had been downgraded seriously.
