The interviewer is indirectly asking you if you can 'think outside the box'.

Internalize it and apply your response towards the position that you are interviewing for. The question have nothing to do with Arts or design creativity; it can be apply to any discipline and job type.

It is a two edged sword question and your supportive narrative must walk in between a fine line....Companies need people who are creative or can think outside the box, but unless they are interviewing you for the position of the CEO or the President of the Board of Director; you will certainly work under a Manager or a Supervisor; so your answer must also interject how your creativity and thinking outside the box would not make you to overlook company leadership or get into your head or distract from your company's assigned role/responsibilities.

Creativity means so many things and depends in what context. For a bank job, what the interviewer wanted to know was your ability to think OUTSIDE the box.

All you needed to have done was to give an instance where you came up with something new and how it benefited you or the organisation or even your family and friends.

That to me would have been a bonus question!

"I can act sir, if knowing how to act counts as being creative".

Staying in the same acting line..
I can act, well it's no debatable fact that art is life and acting is a part of life. For one to be good in acting just doesn't center on stage performances alone but your level of creativity. How are you able to interpret the script into act depends on creativity. Well no one is perfect but I am and I can boldly say I am near perfection when it comes to creativity. Life they say is a stage and everything that we do is also part of acting which in the long run is a function of creativity. I believe that if this defines creativity, then, I am the right candidate to called a creative person

See the answer I would give if I were in your shoes: "I wish you could give me an opportunity to prove to you how very creative I am right."
This is a creative way of saying yes. If you just answer a point-blank "yes", it would mean little to nothing, but a creative answer (and the ability to deliver) would sell you.

The first key to passing an interview is by being confident...

Over the years, I discovered the best way to get confident is to see the interviewers beneath you and that they don’t worth your time, but you just want to showcase your talents to them, and don’t really care if given or not.

Being creative is nothing more than bringing new ideas to the table. Whether in acting, singing, even in banking operations and marketing.
Answer like, "Yes I think I am creative in different aspects. I can bring bring new ideas, and new ways to solving problems and taking on challenges".
This short and simple answer is enough and I dont think the interviewer will have any more question on that regard after you drop this answer. Goodluck to you and hopefully the best job is yet to come your way.
I remember back then 2006 I went for Finbank interview and I was denied the job cos the guy asked me who the deputy Governor of Delta state was. Like what da fu*ck? I knew it was Ada... something but since I couldn't mention her name in full, the guy bounced me, worst is, I am not even from Delta state for that matter. Life have been kind to me afterwards. So learn, clean ur hands when you fall and move on.

[quote author=MisterJeph post=84463061]Hello Nairalanders.

Hmmmmmmm,
Well your hesitation was not necessary. You should have started off slowly and think as you go.
If I was in your shoes( dis is me hooting my trumpet tho);

Well, sir/ma'am I cannot necessarily say I am creative as that might seem I am blowing my trumpet or being unnecessarily hyperbolic, but I would say I am ok in the creative department.
For example,
While I was a student, I did XYZ with my student Union that gave them a very profitable year.

I advised my Department to jump into a Printing and photocopying business that enabled us stay afloat with little need for soliciting funds.
I have also raised a couple of thousands by just being a man in the middle in multiple businesses.
Well sir/ma'am,
I must say I was an untrained Creator back then and I was able to hold my fort, and I strongly believe if given the chance to work with such an amazing team as found in your bank.....I believe my creative genie would be unleashed.
And if it is anything to consider, I am currently writing a book on "the woes of the Ex-corper", or "The tales of a Hungry jobseeker" (elicits laughter from your panel of judges)

The end!

I saw this and I fell into laughter too.

For crying out loud people need to understand the meaning of words and contextual application before assuming they know the meaning of a particular word.

it's sad that all the O.P could interprete as being creative is what he voiced out at that interview.

We Nigerians, because of our insecurities always waste time thinking about why the person asked a question before we answer.
A simple question that would need a frank answer would see us acting suspicious

Most of us are guilty, like it or not
For instance,
"where are you?" (on the phone). I bet you can't answer it right under 5 secs

What is your name? (what does he want with my name), ends up giving a fake name

How old are you? Ah, don't even go there especially the ladies
i don't think the @OP is insecure in any way. He was just stuck up in his head planning his next answers, which is a bad conversational habit, in this case an interview

You are absolutely right.

State of mind, adequate preparation and confidence are all that's required in any given test, examination or interview.

But you see anxiety written over some applicants as soon as it gets to their turn to be interviewed and I'll be like, this is not a do or die thing nah.
You see them failing before the test/ interview.

Nairaland is filled with Sadists, haters and Nazists, go to Quora, twitter, Instagram, Reddit it's totally different from this place.
This forum is unique in a negative way.

Spot On! It's getting annoying and crazy, you will log out of twitter to nairaland and meet the same news, but different comments, while the twitter comments are always sensible and positive. The nairaland comments are always the positive. Like this place is a breeding ground for tribalists and illiterates.
you forgot the kids who just want to laugh about everything to gain some likes. I hope the Owner seeks some innovative ideas or the impossible will happen (the forum will lose value completely and be overtaken)

Hello Nairalanders.

I attended an interview yesterday, it wasn't my first interview but it was the first time a question caught me off guard. I was always prepared before interviews and do my research on the hiring company. But yesterday, when the interviewer asked me; "are you creative?, (I would have just answered yes, and he would have asked me what creative things I've done) my brain went blank for a second and I started looking for a suitable answer.

Don't get me wrong, I have creative ideas, but have I really done something creative? I can act, write plays, but my guess was the interviewer wanted my answer to be in line with the position I was applying for, so I started fumbling for the right answer, after a while uneasiness began to appear on the face my interviewer, apparently I was wasting too much time on this one question. So I let out only thing bouncing up and down in my mind; "I can act sir, if knowing how to act counts as being creative".

I was applying for a bank job for crying out loud, not auditioning for a movie role. How does acting correlate with banking?

Over to you guys. How should I have done justice to the question?
Creativity in this context means problem solving. How to respond and solve the problems that might come during day-to-day operation.
