It is not just about tolerance. What about the consequences of reckless comments, who handles that? I am sure you know what power the tongue holds. What might have prevented the Rwandan genocide? Mere tolerance? megama: |

NaMeAboki: Very good camoflague of your intentions until the second to the last paragraph where your punt for the President surfaces. That is where it all falls flat and gives ammunition to those who say the former president was criticised and perhaps harangued much more on social media. And yes, more ammunition to those who see this as the deepening of the personalisation of goverment. I remember then that I warned in clear terms (check my posts of 2014/2015) that the APC and its supporters were setting a precedence in the media storming of goverment that would be difficult to recover from. So here we are years down the line you want us to support laws to dismantle your own creations. First of all, laws should not be made for the protection of one individual(s) interest against the interests of the majority. Or laws made to benefit an individual against the profit of the majority. Secondly, laws should not be made after the sensibilities and tastes of individuals when viewed against the interests of the public particularly as regards tenured elected goverments. If not it may becone impossible to change such goverments whether they perform or not. Finally, the power to criticise and oppose freely is the clear distinction between democracy and autocracy. Democracy is all about holding power in a flux. The moment you begin to tinker with and counter the balance of power in favour of either side democracy begins to falter and inevitably breaks down with devastating consequences suchas we have seen in much of Africa and its underdevelopment for decades. A call to office and leadership in a democracy is not a tea party. The world over leaders come out looking spent, aged and shrivelled. It has no attraction but the passion to serve and sacrifice to drive home an ideology to better the country and her peoples. You and your President must understand that. 5 Likes |

Now that we have the 'Rubber Stamp' Senate, people are in trouble. That's why I hail Saraki, the most strongest Senate President, yet failed to be understood by many. If this is what you call Democracy, then America and Europe could have dissentegrated since. We borrow our anti-social policies and ideas from China, yet we failed to borrow their Judicial System of governance. Anyways, Papa God dey. 1 Like |

Its sad that with the pressing needs like constant power supply, good roads, properly funded and managed public schools, properly equipped hospitals...high unemployment rate, the list is endless. But its gagging people that interest these so called leaders who rigged themselves into power because you should actually deserve reelection based on your performance in office. I can recall someone saying baboons will soak in blood and so on just because he failed an election. Imagine if we had this social media bill back then, would he even be here today? People are angry that's why they criticise your govt, if you were performing you wouldn't be scared of the criticism. My uncle once told me that criticism is like fertilizer, it smells bad but makes the plants grow. You can't stifle the poor suffering masses with your evil bill. If the kitchen is too hot, then leave it. 2 Likes |

Of course his second to the last paragraph would come to the fray because it is much deeper than what he has expressed. It isn’t about the president or the presidency, but about a tribe and a religion. He only used Buhari as the focal point to reference the attack on the people of the Fulani stock to which our president happens to tribally belong to. Do you honestly fault his comment that the effect of this ethnic profiling of the Fulani as terrorists or killers will outlive the presidency under Buhari? Reason again and you will understand the import of the dastardly act by uncontrolled free-speaking citizens. Remember the free-speaking Hutus and Tutsis were simply expressing themselves, but with so much hatred. The consequences? Over 800,000 souls needlessly lost within 3 months! Even religious leaders as highly placed as Archbishops played active roles in these barbaric acts. Pursuant to the 2015 elections, you will realise that we never heard that PDP was a Christian political party. But you can’t deny that the APC was called an Islamic political party simply because of the the political choice of its members. We all remember the unfortunate statement from the then First Lady, Patience Jonathan, referring to a people of a section of the country as ‘born troway.’ With so much wisdom and patience (which the First Lady didn’t have), the people of that region simply responded that they would reply her on the 28th of March 2015. I believe we are all witnesses to the mandate given to Muhammadu Buhari, which is now history. So, talking about hate speech, we all knew the roles played by the members of the then ruling party PDP and their supporters in propagating the act. AIT was the media vessel for this, what with ‘The Lion of Bourdillon’ documentary and that made about Buhari. Let’s just be honest and fair in our comments. Reference: |

EagleSquare1: Much like you guys, I don't pick sides in arguments or champion tribal sentiments. No one on this forum can even try to imagine from which ethnic group I come from because technically speaking I have no ethnicty and absolutely find tribe and culture of no positive consequence and a serious challenge to our development. Having said that your argument in summary is that because the fulani tribe and by extension the president is being profiled we should pass laws we fully know the real purpose of which is to crack down against dissent. I want to take you up on the fact that the previous president and the peoples of the Niger-Delta have been racially profiled ever since Ken Saro Wiwa was hanged for agitation against the cruel exploitation of the resources and the peoples of that region. Did the past president call for a censorship. No he called for understanding. I will tell you that every tribe will get a mouthful in the media when the maxim in office comes from that tribe because he will play regional politics, administer nepotistically and be seen as an ethnic champion. And it has been so. The west got an ear full when OBJ was in office the degree to which he was viewed as a nationalist. If the fulani tribe is in the cross hairs it is because of perceived acts of taking undue advantage of power, nepotism, and other unpatriotic, deeply divisive acts perpetuated at the highest levels of government. It is the duty of leadership to douse these tensions not enflame them or ignore them and expect people not to speak out aggressively. Once again, leadership is all about sacrifice, the failure of which destroys society. 1 Like |

Fist of all you dundee, recent estimates say our population is 201 million. Secondly, you take advice from China? China is an authoritarian/communist state, they're oppressive, can't you see what they're doing in Hong Kong? Is this fool learned at all? |

jahsharon:Fast developing nation on earth? Are you sound? Do you understand the trade war between China and the US? What do you want to copy from China? Their authoritarian style of government? Or the way their police are brutalizing people in Hong Kong? Or how they put spy cams in African Union's HQs? Or how they're sinking African countries in billions of dollars in debt? Stop talking nonsense. Condemn evil when you see it. It is regulating speech on social media now, soon it will be regulating content on news channels on TV, and so on. We're a DEMOCRACY, NOT A COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT. |
