WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER SAY ABOUT YOU

People have defined character is so many ways, but one that is quite popular is the definition that states that character is how you act everyday.

I'm not totally against this, but character could also be how you act at a specific time, especially during emotionally intense situations.

Let me give you an example

Physics Test

So the physics test was about to commence and we were all seated orderly, the hall was noisy as usual, but people weren't moving about much.

Suddenly, a guy in the department (pretty well-known) came around and announced he was giving out free foolscap sheets (for publicity I suppose).

Now here's what happened.

The ladies and gentlemen who were of their manageable behaviors a while ago, jumped off their seats in excitement and rush towards this dude who was already pulling out the sheets and handing it over to the early comers. Their enthusiasm in the free gift knew no bounds as they reached for their share.

I watched as they, instead of forming a single line or at least being calm about the whole situation, pulled on the foolscap sheet and struggled with the dude, who was screaming at the top of his lungs "there is more, there is more, there is more". But una know as Naija be...

The students grabbed, pulled, squeezed, and crushed the sheets as they all laid claim to something they would probably get if they had shown some manners. Some students used the opportunity to show their true colors, that they were from the street and could do anything they want. The well-meaning dude had no choice but to distance himself from the madness and allow them fight each other for a prize worth N10. It was laughable.

I even saw some students who presented themselves as well-mannered individuals during the first few weeks they arrived. It seems evil communication does corrupt good manners.

After the struggle, many of them made away with their prize and settled down for the test.

The invigilator walked in some minutes afterwards, luckily, he wasn't around to witness the decimation of the foolscap sheets.

He went on to announce a news that broke many hearts, that we won't be needing the foolscap sheets for the test.

I looked at the defeated faces of the warriors who had battled for the sheets.

But what's my point.

Some people judge by first impression, others decide if being your friend will be beneficial to them by watching the life decisions you make.

If you choose to be part of the crowd that always results to argument, rush to struggle to get what they want even when there is a orderly way to do things.. What does that say about your character.and what does that say about you.

You made a great attempt, but I see no correlation or nexus between the short story and character which is the topic you were trying to elaborate on. Your choice of story was not very apt for the topic you wanted to describe. You began the treatise with "People have defined character is so many ways..." rather than "...in so many ways". Learn to review your writing to correct any errors.

Moreover, your English is quite defective in many areas, but I will point out one error which many Nigerians are guilty of making. You wrote "...part of the crowd that results to argument". It is wrong to use "result" in that way, you should rather say "...part of the crowd that resorts to..."

There are expressions that could have worked better in certain areas in this piece. For example, instead of writing "...he wasn't around to witness the decimation of the foolscap sheets." I would have written "...he wasn't around to witness the melee that took place minutes ago" or "he wasn't around to witness the scuffle that took place". "Decimation of the fullscap sheet" sounds rather absurd.

All in all I will give you a score of 6/10 for writing style and 7/10 for grammar. There is room for improvement. Good luck in your quest to become a great writer.
