$500 in Toronto? Maybe with two or three other room mates. Having room mates gets old after a certain age

Hope you know there's a difference between Toronto and the GTA. If you stay in areas like Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York, Markham etc you could find accommodation in the Five hundreds renting a room to yourself in a house most probably.

Alright then.

Sometimes its good to pay the extra cost tho. I personally like the modern condos as the community is always clean with lots of amenities.

Most days i leave my door unlocked because im confident my neighbours have no business stealing from me.

I also like to see logos from my patio , taking a bus or even walking more than a stone throw to buy something can be troublesome in suburbs. No were is cheap atleast in vancouver like it used to be

Ah Vancouver is king when it comes to accommodation pricing na. Everybody knows that. But you are right about having housemates becoming old and annoying, more so when they are total strangers. This is why i am taking a keen interest in Edmonton. Accommodation for Bachelors is so enticing in that City. Just hope they've got a job market to match.

I've never lived in a Suburb lol I have experience in Ottawa so places like Barrhaven, or even Brampton seem so isolated with nothing but houses around for kilometers.

Canada must be treating you real nice. Carry on.

It is really appalling when after people struggled so ahrd to get the PR status to Canada, they now bad mouth the country. It is very very absurd and a sign of ingratitude to God and the system.

People come here, especially Nigerians, to complain about so many things as if they were forced to come live here in the first place.

I mean, if where you're coming from is any better, if your Banana Island in Lagos, or Maitama in Abuja is devoid of any problem, why come to Canada in the first place?

You hear them complain of cold, complain of the primary and secondary system and be looking for Catholic School here and there. We have come again with our entitlement mentality to a foreign land.

If only you know how many desperate young and men women out there that are struggling desperately to be in this position. I mean, how!!! How can anyone from Nigeria in particular be complaining here? Even if you earn millions monthly back home, you should have stayed back now and stop whining like a baby. Like I said, after some people have attained the PR status they want to now demistify it- making it look like it doesn't worth of afterall.

All the issues and problems that have raised here on this forum, we face more than all that, and if not worse, back home. Nobody told you they pick money on the tree in Canada nah! You have to work mehn! You have to wake as early as 5am, if need be, just like you in Lagos, and go to work, just like every Canadians do as well, and earn your pay cheque to pay your bills.

The good thing, as far as I'm concerned, is that you'll get value of every cent you spend. Unlike where I come from, where I pay 5k for NEPA every month and spend 15 to 20k on fuel for generator. Isn't that madness?

Please, we shouldn't complain abeg. If you're going through tough times, yes tough times are bound to happen, like I've been out of job for the past three weeks, let's simply cry out for help, period! Not castigating and making it look like it was a bad decision.

Bills! Bills! Bills!

This Canadian dream sometimes feel like Canadian slavery!

I was watching a video on YouTube about Canadians with very 'marketable' degrees like Engineering and Accounting who have to work three jobs just to pay their bills...I was just wondering if this is the same Canada some folks want to quit Chevron jobs for.

I think many Nigerians need to watch videos of ordinary Canadians earning minimum wage trying to eke out a living in cities like Toronto and Vancouver. I'm sure many would not be as enthused as they are about this 'Canada Waka' if they understand that the struggle of living in Canada could be as tough as the process of getting into Canada.

You are correct on the bills seeming to take a huge chunk of your income. However its not limited to canada, its how most developed countries work. (plus tempting u with credit and if you are not careful you get into serious debt and are trapped in the rat race) I can attest to the same for the UK and have friends in the US also lamenting on bills, health insurance etc. Your acess to basic amenities and advanced facilities come at a cost.
On the canadian dream, the question that should be asked is whats the purpose or motive behind coming to canada. Is it because others are doing it, or solely for your kids. In my opinion these are valid but not enough to sustain you when it gets tough. Yes canada is not perfect, no country is and a lot of immigrants seem to forget that moving to a new country literally means starting over and it takes a while to settle in.
If you dont know why you moved to canada in the first place then you can easily get discouraged. But most importantly do it for yourself. Yes the opportunity is there, yes you want the best for your kids, you want to pepper them in your old neighbourhood by relocating abroad, Yes you want to escape the madness of naija but after u have escaped then what. This is where we get stuck. If you have no strong purpose in yourself driving u, then u might not be able to find the inner strength to push through when it gets really hard.

For me, my strong reason is freedom. Ultimately my choice gives me the opportunity to go anywhere and do what I want without my green nigerian passport as a limitation. Yes i want to escape the madness, yes its a better life for my kids and saner way of living for my hubby and I. Those are great bonuses but for me what makes me smile when im home alone with my kids driving me nuts( i have a baby barely three months) and missing the african support system and cheap daycare and the fact that im stuck at home till im comfortable to leave my baby in daycare. Its that in the not too distant future I can plan to volunteer for an orphanage in south america and just up and go no restrictions.
What im simply saying is that I did canada for me and not for 'others'

I am alone with my kids in canada and am looking to start working soon. Considering the high cost of daycare, does it make sense to hire a nanny instead to take care of the kids (eg 5 kids of different ages all less than 7) at home; the school aged kids would go to school and be dropped off at home when they close.
Is there any scenario where the cost of a nanny is subsidized?

I would really appreciate the opinions, advice and/or discussions of people who are very familiar with this.

Please do we have Winnipegans who can shed light on average accommodation / living expenses and what to expect? I know the weather is extremely cold and the rest (Also been scouring Kijiji for updates btw) but additional specific information wrt living and life in Winnipeg will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

DISCLAIMER : THIS PPR STORY IS FOR ABYEJECKS.

My Ppr Timeline
ITA: June 26th
Aor: July 5
Adr(schedule A): July 31
Mep/Bil: August 6(wedding anniversary)
Bil completed: Aug 9
Long silence
I raised cse Sept to find out Vo and a week later response came Ottawa.
Another silence till early November I raised cse for eligibility status and response came that background verifications is in progress and eligibility in progress. Nothing about security. I relaxed.
Ppr came in early this morning by 5am.
Relocation Story
I first heard about Canada Pr in October 2018 when my hubby's colleague disclosed to my hubby that a mutual friend had just moved. Unknowingly to us, she has been writing Ielts without telling hubby. I decided to research and found out another family friend had just completed her pebc report and never told me. She introduced me to nairaland. I joined in part 5. I was a silent reader. I studied nairaland like novel. I started preparing for Ielts.
November 2018, we did passport for my son and mine was to be renewed and changed to hubby's name. It was very stressful thanks to Immigration. Finally, it was ready early January 2019.
We did evaluation with Ices. Hubby's school Unn was fast within 2weeks sent his transcript. Unilag was stressful and finally sent my masters transcript in April after 2months delay. We wrote Ielts together March 12 2019 computer based with BC
Myself(pa) L8.5 R8.5 W7 S7.5
Hubby(spouse) L7 R9 W6.5 S7
Hubby's Eca report came out in April. Miraculously my Eca report came out in June.
We created profile on June 17.
We got ITA June 26th with 475 at cut off 462
We booked medicals for July 4 with Qlife. Did PCC 3rd July.
Paid upfront fees both processing and rprf.
Work experience
3yrs plus as a secondary school teacher. Noc 4031. Put hubby's work in his personal history.
I submitted employment letter, Reference letter from nairaland, ID card and payslips. I indicated I was paid in cash on the reference letter.
Proof of funds
We did a fixed deposit in our joint acct and used hubby's pension letter and statement of account for buffer in case of exchange rate. We wrote an loe breaking proof of funds down. The second loe was to explain the name change in my ID card as the date was reissued due to name change.
Then the long wait.
Finally, ppr has landed. A big shout out to Nairaland. I learnt everything here.
P.s Justwise banned me from nairaland so simeone else has to post my ppr story.
Ppr will come for everyone waiting. Thank you all for the support.

My values are average using Alberta and Sask as examples. Cost will vary for provinces and within cities in a province too. e.g rental may be cheaper in Red Deer compared to Calgary. Car Insurance will be cheaper in Winnipeg compared to Toronto.

Minimum Rent: Condo ($1000 and up), House ($1300 and up), sharing rooms - if you are single ($500 and up)
I aded "and up" because cheap housing will come with issues such as pests.

Car finance: $300 (Assuming the car is $18,000 and financed for 5 to 6 years). For starters, better to buy a small car outright.

Car Insurance: $150 (could be more or a little less depending on several factors. e.g premium or 3rd party, your postal code, parked in a garage or street, distance driven, used for Uber, age of driver, winter tires etc

Phone. (around 5 to 7gb): $80

Home Internet (no cable tv): $70

Water (if house): $80

Gas - Home heating (if house): $80

Electricity: $80 (if you love cooking, and also frequently use your oven and electric heaters in winter, then it will be higher)

Petrol: $200 (assuming you drive 20 to 30 min per day and you don't drive an SUV. if you do not have a car, Bus pass: $110)

Tenant Insurance: $20 (some landlords and housing agemcies will ask for it).

Bank fees: $10 and up

Single people can save lots of money if they decide to share. Bills like internet and electricity can be shared too.

if you intend to buy a house not long after landing:

You will have to consider the following additional costs:

Home insurance: $100

Property tax: $350 (condo fees is extra, but property tax for condos are generally lower)

House maintenance: $500 (This has been averaged over certain number of years), You can spend 0 in one year but can also spend $7k the following year.

Miscellaneous (some important and some are not)

Food: $150 per family member

Clothes: $30 per month (This has been averaged as well)

Entertainment/refreshments and eating out: $150

Gym: $50

Sports participation for those with kids: ($50 to $150)

Daycare: $1000 per kid for full-time

Personal care and Healthcare: ?

Amazon (people that love shopping): ?

Car maintenance:?

Costs are monthly. I hope this helps someone or families preparing to land.

Others can add or subtract since this is just an opinion.

Dear Seniors and Experienced Folks,

My wife and I got our passports back with COPR this week. I am confused about airline to book to Saskatoon this December for next year - February/March. I am thinking Ethiopian Air or Egypt Air? I really wish to get a good deal in terms of cost and reliability. Please advice.

Cost of living in Winnipeg would be similar to what is obtainable in the other prairie provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan. It might be a little cheaper.

Canada is expensive like it or not.. i live in a place i pay 15% HST on anything and minimum wage is 11.40$..there is no train and bus works from 6am to 6pm..

Lol you didn’t research beforehand to know that HST is 15% and minimum wage is $11.40 where you chose to settle? Please stop.

Neither of those airlines fly to Regina directly. Use Lufthansa, Airfrance, KLM or BA. You will most likely have a transfer in Toronto with either Air Canada or Westjet to Regina
