The future of Everton manager Marco Silva was the key talking point ahead of the Merseyside derby between the Toffees and league leaders Liverpool but match commentators Peter Drury and Jim Beglin dished out a great commentary and their assessments of Super Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi caught the eye.

Iwobi was in action for 90 minutes in Liverpool's 5-2 win at Anfield and Beglin said the following about the Nigerian.

"He knows he's got time. I'm surprised that he's not gone with his laces and power (to shoot)," Beglin, a former Republic of Ireland international who played as a left back and was a Liverpool player between 1983 and 1989 where he made 98 league appearances and scored two goals said in the 40th minute when he let fly a shot that missed target.

Soon afterwards Beglin said: "Everybody was feeling let down by Iwobi's disappointing long diagonal pass meant for Dominic Calvin Lewin," albeit his co commentator for NBC Sports Peter Drury did commend a good pass from the Nigerian few seconds later.

In the 85th minute the Nigerian laid a great pass for former Juventus young striker Moise Kean and Jim Beglin could not help but say a nice wood to him.

"The ball from Iwobi was class," said Beglin on the Nigeria international who created about two other goal scoring chances in the match.

Those creative moments was commended by former Everton midfielder Phil Neville in the post match analysis.

"Good pass from Iwobi," Neville noted as he found central defender Michael Keane who finished brilliantly for the first of Everton's two goals.

The Nigerian also set up another good pass for Calvin Lewin who was slightly pushed by Virgil van Dijk but no penalty was handed to them.

Everton now find themselves back in relegation places placed 18th with 14 points after starting Wednesday's game in 17th place.

Dessers has chosen Nigeria to get more time on the field. With Belgium, it will be almost impossible for him to play. He is not anywhere close to the Belgian team.

Rohr's team selection has been generally fair. If Dessers keeps scoring, he will be in the team in March. We also have to look at the form of Maja and maybe Iheanacho.

Onuachu, Dennis and Olayinka would probably be dropped depending on their own form.

Rohr gave an interview lately (aired on Supersport's SE show) in which he stated in no unclear terms that he was focused on developing his team and had "no time for new faces". With Rohr's track record of loyalty to " his boys" this is cause for serious concern.

It is the biggest disgrace that Lionel Messi won that award over Sadio Mane. I will continue to say that football is the most racist sport on the planet. As an African it makes me feel worthless that a man can do so so much and not even make the top 3.

I am a Barcelona fan but Messi did not deserve that award. Mane defeated him in the biggest moment of the season. If Harry Kane did what Mane he would surely be the world best.

Mane snubbed for being African, claims Kouyate

Cheikhou Kouyate indicated he feels European and South American players are favoured in the Ballon d'Or voting - at Sadio Mane's expense.

AS.com

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane would have won the Ballon d'Or if he was European or Brazilian, claims his Senegal team-mate Cheikhou Kouyate.

Mane came fourth in the final standings with 347 votes from the panel of world football journalists, behind winner Lionel Messi (686 votes) of Barcelona, Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk (679) and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo (476).

As well as helping his team to Champions League glory in June, Mane has continually excelled in domestic action for the Premier League's runaway leaders and Kouyate, who was part of the Palace team that lost 2-1 to Mane's Liverpool in November, suggested the 27-year-old was overlooked due to an anti-African bias.

Cheikhou Kouyate: No doubt Mane should have won

"For me this Ballon d'Or is for Sadio Mane, there is no doubt about that," Kouyate told The Mirror.

"Listen, if Sadio was a Brazilian or a European there would not have been no debate.

"It would have been him for the award straight away and it's not because I play with him at international level, or because I know him; it's just what people who watch football feel.

"Just go back and watch what he did for both club and country and you will see in between the lines that no one has been better than him."

Mane was instrumental in Senegal's run to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals in five appearances before they were beaten 1-0 by Algeria at the last hurdle.

Kouyate added: "We all know that Messi is really good, maybe the greatest player, but last season, come on.

"Maybe it's not just football that they look at because there is no way three people had a better season than him [Mane].

"It's just unbelievable how some people are judged but that is not fair."

Stats which show just why Messi deserved to win the award.

– In 54 games for club and country, Messi scored 46 goals in all competitions.

– Messi also provided 17 assists in those games, meaning he averaged a goal or assist every 0.86 appearances.

– Across 2019, Messi recorded a win percentage of 68.5% in the games he was involved in.

– That win rate saw him become the player with the most La Liga victories (346, overtaking Iker Casillas) and the most victories in Barcelona’s history (496, overtaking Xavi).

Messi finished as the Champions League top goalscorer with 12 goals in 10 matches.

He has scored three hat-tricks in 2019, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 34 La Liga hat-tricks in the process.

The Argentine ended the 2018-19 La Liga season by winning his sixth Pichichi Trophy as top scorer in the competition, equalling Telmo Zarra’s record which has stood since 1953.

– Messi also extended his record for the most European Golden Shoe victories after finishing as the top league scorer in Europe with 36 goals (scored in just 34 games). In doing so he also became the first player to win the award for three consecutive seasons.

So, how is Mane the best player of 2019?

In the biggest moment of the season Messi failed. Mane won the most prestigious competition in Europe. Didn't messi have better La Liga stats than Ronaldo when Ororo was winning world best?

Mane also was the joint top scorer in the EPL if winning the Champions league wasn't enough. The man is the best player in the world by far.

How can you reject what has not been presented to you.

When and where was Dessers given an official call up to the Belguim team.

First of the Belguim FA recognise that thier league is not the best in Europe. So what you find is the vast majority if not all of thier top players play in the top 3/4 leagues of Europe.

If Dessers was in EPL or La Liga or Seria A getting those figures he would be taken more seriously.

With regards to marketing and branding Dessers profile will attract little or no interest. For instance Rashford will be making just from Nike at least £3 million a year possibly more now.

How can you reject what has not been presented to you.

You kept on hammering on Rashford like he is your everyday average player.. That dude is a talisman for one of the most traditional teams in England

How much is Mane or Salah kit endorsement deal?

Are they not African players?

I wonder what rejecting Belgium will do to Cyril Dessers, maybe he'll stop scoring goals, maybe endorsements will stop coming his way

It isn't wise to argue with someone that will never admit he is wrong

GFFN think they're sharp... Maja is 100 percent a Nigerian international.

Even in the ligue 1 highlights I streamed this morning, the commentator was annoyingly referring to him as an England International angry angry
