It was a journey of about five years. I only added the solar panels just recently.

5years ago, luminous inverter was got new for 35k. 100ah Leoch battery for 30k(now bad and out of service), ancillaries(wiring etc) 8k.

Late 2018,
200ah mercury battery 83k,
60a pwm controller 8k on Aliexpress,
25 metres 6mm dual core cable 850/metre,
Four 150watts panels from alaba about 35k each,
Ancillaries(changeover, etc)about 10k.
On average say, at today's cost about 300k

Hello house, been a while.

Pls I have a set up similar to this.

2 250- watt solar panels
220ah luminous battery and
A 40 ah mppt charge controller.

When I changed my controller from pwm to mppt, I was getting harvest of around 85 ah per day, that was around July last year.

But since around October last year to today, the harvest has dropped sharply to about 35 ah per day.

What could be the issue?

NiyiOmoIyunade:
Rolls have Flooded, AGM, Gel and Lithium.

The specific one I committed to is an AGM - Rolls Surrette S12-290AGM.

It is rated 290Ah at C100, 260Ah at C20 and around 230Ah at C10.

More importantly, I chose it because it promises 1,250 cycles at 50% DoD - if the claims are true, I should get at least 4 years if I consume 300Ah to 400Ah daily from a 48v 1,040Ah bank.

One interesting tidbit I picked up from talking to a battery seller is that the cycle life is not actually end of battery service life but rather when the battery has dropped to 80% of initial capacity and from this point on begins a rapid decline.

this video may interest you, @ house, whats your take on the comparison, i know this issue has veen discussed severally here

@rover, yes they are still serving ok, offgrid installation, hooked to an epsolar 60amps with 8 x 250w array 24v inverter

Did you at anytime clean the surface of your panels? are your cables copper or aluminium coated with "copper" ?

I have not cleaned the surface of the panels, they don't look dirty though and I installed them just last year.

The cables I think it copper, I don't think they are coated.

It's probably your battery that is gradually giving up the ghost. You may also check if some structure was introduced that may have caused some form of shading

NIGERIANS ARE UNIQUE AND INTERESTING PEOPLE. ...

GOVERNOR EL-RUFAI installed solar street lights in Kaduna RIGASA area.
Within no time, all the batteries of the solar lights were stolen, incuding the ones in front of a Police station. Each of those batteries cost more than #100,000. ELRUFAI Summoned all the Police DPO's, & all WARD HEADS in the area & told them that in one week if those batteries are not found & returned and the thieves apprehended, the Ward Heads will be removed & all the DPOs face Police Orderly Room Trials.
In 48 Hours all the batteries were returned & the thieves apprehended smiley

It appears as practicing diy in solar, we have similar and sometimes varied experiences acruing from being a diy.

To me battery balancers have performed great and had delayed purchase of new set of batteries for my 48v few months ago. Even though am yet wondering why you consider it culprit. Perhaps you're right in my view that it covers up the weaker links in your bank. It also point to the fact that you had no time to tend yourbanks always in order to detect bad battery in series early enough. Nevertheless I will encourage you to plug in your balancers back from the beginning of your new bank.

If you have more than 48v200AH bank I will recommend the grid or loop structure (not NEPA) ss expanded by NiyiOmoIyunade few months back if you don't want to use balancers.

hancock:
Hi bigrovar, welcome to Lagos....

I believe lead acid batteries are not suitable for Nigerian market due to regular power outage that can last for days/weeks forcing one to heavily discharge and re-charge the batteries
I Hope this helps...………
PS: Battery balancers appears to be the culprit in the untimely death of my previous bank. story for another day...... grin

This is indeed better than the previous one as it has mppt, though I won't also recommend this due to the very low max pv

Thanks for the response bros.

But does the state of the battery affect harvest?

It's a new battery by the way, luminous tubular.

I want to try washing the panels first cos on a closer look, they appear dirty with fungi growing on the edges.

Let me see if there'll be improvement

Yes it's possible there was a time my batteries were giving up and hervest reduced. However it seem that is not your case since you have a new battery.

Dear sirs,
will the zinox ipowerplus xplus 3kva 48vdc puresine wave inverter last for say 5 years and more when put to an off grid daily use? The red type. Are these of high quality?
Thanks for anticipated response.

SolnergyPower:
You can use the attached device, it's a timer. You can set it for Monday till Sunday and it continues to work every other day.

We do set for most clients from 8am till 3pm everyday. That means the timer triggers your load ON by 8am and turns it OFF at 3pm

It goes for about 10k or so in Alaba.

Okay Alaba too rowdy tho smiley.. I've got these items in brand new & few weeks used up for serious clients ..

Hi, I am not sure anyone here has used the model you're asking about but I believe it should come with a warranty and also after sales package and since zinox has a presence in Nigeria, you may not have much to worry about.

bigrovar:
Hi guys I made the transition from my base in abuja to lagos, as such I had to decommission for solar installation over there and sold it (for scraps) to neighbours. I intend to start from stretch a new installation. I have already gotten 9 x 355w Yingli Solar Panels and A Victron Smart MPPT 150/100 Charge controller, I would be reusing my Axpert 3KVA 24v Inverter from the previous project. My problem now is batteries. I am at a loss which battery to go for..

My traditional choice are Tubular Batteries (Flooded) but they can only take limited number of currents.. and with a setup able to output over 100A my fear is even with opportunity loads, I would still be over charging those batteries almost on a daily.

AGM seems to be the way to go and Yes everyone says Quanta truth is Quanta's own datasheet https://www.quanta.in/images/pdf/Quanta-SF-Brochure.pdf does not cover itself in glory It states a between a 500 - 700 cycles at 50% depth of discharge this is about 2 years max of useful battery life.. economically I don't find it viable. I know people who have been using their battery for more than 2 years and still rave about it. But when a manufacturer says their product will last 2 years if used ideally.. I pay attention.

I am also considering ThunderVolts 6v 400AH from solar deport, unfortunately there is hardly any official spec sheet on the battery, no manufacturer's details, no recommended charge voltage no nothing. Some asked about the spec sheet and got no reply. If anyone has used it before place share your experience

Fullriver is within my purview but most of the fullriver sold in Nigeria within the 200AH range are the HGL Model which are not designed for deep cycle application the DC model designed for deep cycle (hence the name) is only available in 260AH at a price point above my budget.

Monbat too has same issue, the model sold in Nigeria are not designed for deep cycle application (I can be wrong)

If anyone has suggestions on good AGM batteries please share.

http://www.felicitysolar.com/c/solar-battery_0031

U can check out the datasheet for the 2v 200ah(though it's gel opzv) just have a look.

Good morning house. Please I am a novice with solar instalation. I have a 200ah battery, 1kva inverter connected charging with PHCN. I am planning to install a solar panel in addition to the little charging I will be getting from PHCN if there is light.
Please I need guide of what I should buy and how to install them.
Many thanks for your contributions.

It you are on a tight budget, buy 150watts ×4 solar panels, with a 30amp pwm charge controller, get a professional to help you install if you can't diy, you can reach me through the number on my profile if you need real time assistance.

Its still available..both the UKA &Qasa fans..
Seems i would buy both now and see
Check for dabamat seller.

Edit: just bought both fans now

So got around to unpacking the fans today.
Here is the unbiased review

1. QAsa : 18 inch blade.5 blades.has remote control and timer.consumes 5w on lowest and 26w on highest.since its soft touch it has upto 8 speed settings.the build is nice and professional.no rechargeable fxn, however comes with a factory cable to be used to hook upto an external battery.price on jumia N10,715

2. UKA: 16 inch fan. 3 blades.has the traditional 1, 2, 3, 0 fan speed setting. Not much difference in energy consumption at the diff speed settings.drawa btw 19w to 22w. Comes with a small 12v 2.4ah smf battery.located o n the base and has another free comparment, that a diy person could install a 2nd battery, and connect it in parallel with the factory battery, thus increasing the run time.Factory spec runtime is 1 to 3 hrs, depending on speed setting, as stated by the manufacturers. Had it run for over 45mins on meduim speed, zero issues..price on jumia N8,765

Conclusion, both fans hv strength and weaknesses, the best of both worlds would be a hybrid wherre. by the strengths of both fans are combined.
I like the remote control fxn in qasa, as well as the big 18 inch fan size. It was thoughtful of qasa to also throw in an already made cable for external battery usage.the qasa fan is also more elegant.
The empty slot for a 2nd battery is also nice as a diyer could swap the factory lead smf, install a compact lithuim battery pack and use the free 2nd battery slot to e house a bms . Or a 2nd battery as well.

The UKA fan arrived with fan 3 speed button malfunctioning, and unfortunately, the return window has elapsed, as i was out of town the period the fan was delivered, so thats a minus already for it.

edit: was able to repair the speed button malfunction, a bunch of cables, were not making proper connection inside, was able to plug then in properly, and all is good now
