Matilda Mark Itonyo: Police Arrest Ex-Boyfriend Of Murdered Rivers Student by jamespeter10(m): 8:20am On Dec 16, 2019
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of a 500-level Law student of the Rivers State University, Miss Matilda Mark Itonyo.

The suspect, whose name was withheld by the police, was only identified as a former boyfriend of the murdered student.

It was gathered that the police had in the early hours of Saturday tracked the suspect to his house in Port Harcourt before taking him away to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The 24-year-old Matilda was stabbed several times in the neck and head by her assailant(s) at her private apartment outside the university campus.

The killers were said to have broken into her room in the early hours of Tuesday and allegedly raped her before snuffing life out of her.

The incident, according to sources, forced some of her course mates to shun classes when they got wind of the incident.

Confirming the arrest of the suspect, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, explained that he was apprehended for interrogation in connection with Matilda’s murder.

He stated, “We cannot say that we have arrested the killer of the student. He was only arrested for interrogation and at the end, if he is found culpable, he will be prosecuted. But if he is innocent, he will be allowed to go.

“Yes, the suspect is the former boyfriend of the late student. He was arrested on Saturday morning after being tracked to his residence.”

The father of the deceased, Mr Ebikene Itonyo, told our correspondent that he rushed to the state CID when he learnt that a suspect had been arrested.

Ebikene called on the police not to relent in their efforts to fish out the killers of his daughter and bring them to justice.

“I was at the state CID. I rushed to the place when I was told that one of the suspects had been arrested. We know that the suspect will deny, but I think the police must have seen some certain things that made them to arrest him,” Ebikene added.

I personally like the fact that they refused to disclose his name so that if he is innocent his image would not be tarnished...which is a far cry from the media trial, that another FGDD(name has been changed) does.

Someone says the boyfriend should be hanged already. Nigerians don't ask for facts. We just like to pin things on people to ease the pain not necessarily to get real justice.

I like to be told why the boyfriend was arrested and why its so automatic that its the boyfriend. Rather the investigators to move in with U. V lights scan the room collect biological samples and then conduct scientific forensic investigation, they've started with the usual guerrilla tactics.

I'm a big fan of justice but not the one where innocent people are sacrificed so some agencies don't look stupid.

There are many ways to do this. If I were on the legal team of the guy, this move can be cou there's of he's innocent

1. The sperm of the offenders one way or the other would be either on clothes around, the body of the corpse or in the body, one way or the other extracting the sperm cells would spearhead Intelligent investigation

2. In the process of the scuffle, hair/body parts could have dropped in the apartment

3.even handprints. Using a UV light would give lots of clues not available to the bare eyes.

First investigative search before arrests. Some persons in the area should have been the first to be questioned so they can describe the males they saw in the area that day/week

They should at least be able to get fingerprints and several other forensic evidences. But, since Nigeria is like 1,000 years away from the rest of the world, it's rocket science to us. angry

Nigerian Police do not have sense!
They do not have a forensic unit and the few people they have are dumb.
True story

Police arrived at a crime scene and came with their finger print tool kit

Dusted the entire surfaces with black power and lifted the prints
Out of curiosity, i asked them against what database they were going to run the prints, the "forensic expert" said we will just put the prints inside machine and it will build the profile of the owner.

Till today, we are waiting for the profile..

It still may not work because we don't have a data base for fingerprints of all citizens in this country. What wound happen after extracting the fingerprints from the crime scene? They should of course be a system where they run it against millions of other registered prints in their database. But sadly, we don't have anything like that in this country.
