Good Afternoon FAM! Its TESTIMONY TIME!!! It's with grateful heart, I write to tell everyone that I've been ADMITTED to study Medicine & Surgery.
I did not get this MBBS at my very first attempt, in fact I wasn't offered anything with my supposed good score. I refused to be deterred, I picked myself up and tried UTME again. At the second attempt, I was served with Microbiology instead of my Medicine. I cried and at the same time was left with no choice than to accept it for fear of ridicule that will come with me sitting at home doing nothing. That was when I stumbled upon this thread.
Mother used to tell me that 'achieving one's goals are the perks of life - we shouldn't give up because we did not get it the first time'. On my final lap as an undergraduate of Microbiology, I picked another UTME form which was JAMB 2019. I really did not have enough time to study, I dabbled between reading for my school exams and preparing for UTME.
At some point, I agreed that my decision was a stupid one, I won't give up on my dream and at the same time, my preparations seems not enough. I tried harder and today I can boldly say my preparations did not go down the drain. Today, I write to tell you that for my Second Degree, I'll be resuming come January 6 for my Medical Education at Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto.
To all the Student Doctors here and the Doctors whose success stories above have helped us remain motivated - I say Thank You. You all are the real MVPs. The list is endless but believe me, I can't thank you all.
Salam.

Provided you don't have a deficiency in Chemistry, then LamLad Chemistry is enough abeg. Killing yourself over Ababio is not advisable.

I don't get the ishh about Ababio self, I use it only for reference. Understanding Chemistry and Lamlad Chemistry were my mains. At the end, it's all about what works for you. Different strokes for different folks.
Well said!!

I'm honestly surprised no one mentioned understanding chemistry by ojokuku.
That textbook is maaddd
I read the textbook last year's jamb and chemistry was my highest in jamb
My mistake this year was getting that textbook very late, like 1week to jamb, and I still did well in chemistry
I even prefer it to ababio sef

You're right. I only managed to hold back my tears when I saw the cut-off point and vowed to come back strong, likewise others of my kind. Boys are not smiling lol.
But must you put in UI
Is it UI that is your passion or being a doctor?
I'm not saying it's a bad thing choosing UI,but you know your strength.
You alone will know if you can take the risk of competition in UI.
And if u think you can't,go somewhere less competitive, otherwise, you'll just end up wasting years for nothing.

U.I admission process is free and fair (based on knowledge), all I need is improvement unlike other varsities which require money and influence (I've got none).

It's just that the book is not popular lk ababio. it's not old also.
But when it comes to explicit explanations I will advise anyone on this earth to use UNDERSTANDING those words inside the tb re well arranged. Every single thing in the Tb is muaaahh book wey dey sweet body
It's not jam packd like ababio.
The questions inside re well selected also.

If you're an indigene in other varsities,it's easier for you.
It depends on where you're from tho.A few states don't have teaching hospitals and maybe you're from one of them. Some state schools are very expensive too.
My point is that if you're from a state that has mbbs approved by NUC and you can afford it,go for it.
If not, then UI is actually your best bet.

Let me correct this notion of yours. Even at the University of Ibadan there are back doors. The doors are very few and not so obvious to the larger public hence creating this illusion of "free and fair". This is Nigeria my dear Brother.

Nevertheless, the UI operates largely on Merit.

"Not true"?
I was given that information by a nairalander who created a thread for DELSU's admission for this year.
Others confirmed it too, the very reason I changed institution to another one, Unical.

Sir, I have a classmate who was admitted via the just concluded DE using his jupeb results from another school.

So When I say it's not true, please take it to the bank.

Big congratulations to you bro... I wish to congratulate everyone who has been admitted into MBBS/BDS most especially DrAuthentic, Horpeyemi, Acecube et al.. you guys won the good fight of faith. I wish u all a safe flight through med sch.....

OK.... with 100l done and dusted, and preclinicals in sight, guys I need your help... confused on the texts to use for MB... pls u guys should recommend straight and concise texts for anatomy, physiology and biochemistry for a beginner like me... also don't know which is better:

Anatomy: Keith Moore vs Last vs Greys
Physiology: Guyton vs Ganong vs Sembulingam
Biochemistry: Vasudevan vs chatterjea
Histology: Junqueira vs Vasudevan vs Wheaters

PS: I'm the type that don't really like voluminous books cos I like repetitive reading..
Thanks In anticipation, your boy is ever loyal..
cc: the whiz. zkid, donp. re, Mara. vel et al.

Although am just also starting my pre clinicals but when I saw Straight and concise text then I couldn't help but to give you a few suggestions as I was also Stranded on this part.

So For Gross Anatomy, I recommend you start with Vishram Singh, For me I started by opening last Anatomy, and straight up I started disliking Anatomy as last Wasn't so explanatory As I had wanted, So I skipped it and went For Keith Moore, although this was a little bit friendly, It was so voluminous, and since you said you don't like volume, I won't push you there, but when I opened Vishram Singh textbook on Anatomy, I started seeing clear waters, so for Gross anatomy, with Extra concise and straight to the point, I'll recommend Vishram Singh. I although it's no Harm if you combine Vishram with Keith Moore, as Keith Moore got real cool Diagrams and Clinical correlation(Blue box).

For Physiology, Although sembuligam seems to Be the best pick for most of us due to the fact that's it's just bullet point without much history and all that, I'll still prefer You go with Guyton and hall because Guyton is So user friendly and Way more Explanatory.. I'll say u start with Guyton first then mayb later switch to sembuligam when preparing for MB...although i still find comprehensive physiology Sweet to my eyes. So once again I can do some combo here. Guyton x comprehensive or Sembuligam x comprehensive.

For BCH, Well I won't say much on this cause I haven't decided yet, I started with vasudevan as that is the most common in my school, But Essential Biochemistry by Naik seems to be more Explanatory to me than vasudevan, chattegea also Makes more sense to me than vasudevan, but the book has some so to say unessential details.. So for consiceness just go with Vasudevan ND make a combo by adding Lecture notes and Essential.

For Histo, Indebir Singh got my Vote here, although Junqueira Should be the best book for histo to me, but I just somehow like Indebir more because of its conciseness.. Am not sure Ave seen Vasudevan histo before, And wheaters Histo is also cool.. So for combo sake, just go with Indebir Singh ND Wheaters, but don't neglect Junqueira, that book got some good stuff..

PS: it's just my recommendation based on your requirements, It might not suit you like it is for me.. Actually the best way to select text is by Doing a quick experiment on them all to ascertain the one that suits you best, recommendation from a colleague sometime might not work.

okay here are my recommendations
Anatomy: Read Gray's at first, then switch to vishram later on when you start understanding anatomy

Physiology: I would always recommend sembumlingam and Guyton combo for a start... later on for CVS, GIT and other systems, Linda Constanzo physiology(Simple, concise yet stuffy and easy to repeat multiple times). you can combine with Ganong for extra stuff
Sembumlingam is very useful when preparing for essay exams.

Biochemistry: Essentials by Naik, sometimes I play around with chatterjea and Vasudevan but Essentials remains my default

Histo: Junqueria, then BRS afterwards(BRS is 400pages of just bullet points, currently revising Histo with it and it's been just pure joy)

Embryo: vishram singh embryology

Las Las I would say you speak to senior colleagues in your school and hear what your lecturers use.
Also, my recommendations might not work for you, so experiment with those books yourself, you won't get past chapter 1 before saying "Hell no, this is not for me"

Good luck and Godspeed

LOL see my Homie Dem.

As you know very well, I didn't have the smoothest of Journey to Med school, It was Hail, Rains, And Mist for me. But it would take more than those to stop a man with Passion.

Back In my Aspirants days, There were lot of challenges, as it is for every aspirants, That Ugly Feeling of Not performing To the Requirements can Kill a man confidence.. No be say we No pass ooo.. As in 290+ for jamb nah correct score, But somehow somehow, it just seems to be so little when aspiring for medicine because of the competition.

So it's not just Perfection we are talking about here, It's also Competition and Struggle. Just We need to sit down and Draft a plan.

CHOOSING AN INSTITUTION

First priority has to be set when choosing An institution, Yeah you might want the Top schools like the UNN and UI, or somewhere nearer to your hometown, But that might just be where The competition is Far much Intense, The competition in med school across the Nation is intense but the Intensity varies from school to school, The way it is in unilag, is not the way it is in Uniport, so think smart and choose a place with Lesser competition if you're not The Type A student.

MATERIAL SELECTION
This is where some of us gets it all wrong, Fine Jamb has its syllabus, and that u should have been thought in secondary school, I honestly don't believe In Extensive reading For Someone preparing for Utme or post Utme, There are some info and books u just don't need.. Making research while reading is cool, but solving the problem A level Maths or A level physics while preparing for ur Utme and post Utme, is just unnecessary.. That is why I'll always advised One to stick with his past questions.. Run through front to back as many times as you can, then let textbook and online forum be your resort if u find any confusion....I won't recommend any Textbooks for any subject because I for once don't think A special textbook is needed for Success, Just Take your syllabus, Read the topic in any good textbook, Run through the past questions, ask questions and remain within your boundaries, don't go seeking irrelevant info.

HAVE A DRIVE

Sometimes I see all these post that am 25yrs, can I still study medicine?... If u have a drive you can study medicine at age 30!..so it for you to know what actually drives you for the course.. It is this Drive that would sustain you even After failing To gain admission after 4-5 trials.. But when there is no drive, u just try two times, and you end up quitting, afterall My mates are already in school so why should I keep Sitting at home all in the name of medicine.

And you know say Nah Baba God be the Ginger for all things success, I sure say if you wahala am, Im go reason your matter.

Just stay positive man, Work and Work some more, This is a very difficult stage in med school(Entry), so just picture you got about 10,000 people aspiring for the same thing u want and only 180 would be given, So try working much harder than the 9,999 people and Nothing will stop you from being called up!

Peace man, Peace!
