So far, the test result has been so impressive. I must confess, the system is performing above my expectations.

Though the test is still going on and I have had course to run the system for 7hours from 8:00am starting with TV and home theater then after some hour's the home theater was removed and decoder and fan came on. At about 1:45pm I connected the refrigerator, then it ran till about 3:15pm when power was restored and system switched to grid power.

To my surprise the inverter battery indicator is still on full battery status and battery was @ 12.6v when grid power was restored.

The inverter has really proved very efficient in conversion and load management. From all indication, my load wattage seems to drop drastically when plugged to the inverter. The inverter seem to indicate lower load power than the actual load rating thereby, leading to very low power consumption.

Testing has been on since Friday and up till now I haven't run out of power even though power is not really stable.

From all indications, my project seems to be a success even as the test continues.

This is no doubt a standard backup for me because I have power since Friday on the appliances I stated earlier at the beginning of this thread.

Currently these are my load and power consumption:
32" TV: 67w
Gotv decoder: 18w
Home theater: 68w
Ceiling fan 20w
Refrigerator: 100w

System still on testing mode, more update still coming.

Feel free to ask questions cheesy cheesy cheesy

This is really nice, how much did you buy the inverter, and is it 12v or 24v?

With Almost a week of installation and with over two days of power outage due to PHCN strike, I was able to test my setup fully.

I can say that it's quite impressive because the setup can last up to 12hours or more if the load shading is done correctly especially, when heavier load like refrigerator is kept out. My gen had to come up twice for about 3-4hours within the over 48hour of power outage just to recharge the battery and I have enjoyed power for quite a good number of hours.

This for me is a very big success and worth the time and efforts. Adding a solar panel to this setup means 24/7 power supply...

Now I'm moving to the next step. Which is, hooking up a solar panel to my current setup and see how well it will work.

I must say lithium iron phosphate (Lifepo4) battery is very good and strong for any backup system that will be subjected to heavy load because they do very well in handling large discharge current and very steady in their active voltage.

Hello house!

Truly! Lifepo4 really rocks and it's worth being use as a replacement in any grid tie and off grid setup.

But one must be careful enough and be ready to go the long road when setting up a backup system with lifepo4. Like I earlier said most of the inverters and charge controllers in the market today are designed with the traditional lead acid batteries in mind so can not be completely safe or compatible with lifepo4.

Though there are a number of hybrid inverters and charge controllers with lifepo4 functions. I strongly recommend using such devices for your setup just to prolong battery life and for safety.

Lifepo4 is actually not a cheap way to go due to the fact that it comes with a premium price but I must say it's worth it if you're able to get the setup correctly.

For me, enjoyment all the way! Though a small setup, but quite good and impressive since I can actually power most of my appliances for good number of hours...

I know very well that almost everybody on this thread would want to ask the same questions. How did I get all the stuff I used for my setup?

Lifepo4 is not common, especially those with higher capacity. Trust me, I tried getting it locally and it seems almost impossible to get, so also is the charger and the ATS...

Like I said earlier, all the stuffs I used for my setup was gotten directly from manufacturer in China. That's because I do product research and since I don't have any Inverter or solar setup before and because I'm considering going into this line of business I decided to use my personal project as a test sample.

This is the reason I created this thread even before I got the materials needed for the project.
I decided to make it a real practical thread from start to where we are now.

Also have in mind that this is a continues process as I'm yet to hook it up to solar soon...

The battery you see here cost 140k.

HELLO HOUSE! cheesy cheesy cheesy

So sorry for the long break, I have been busy. I like to say a big welcome to all of us who made it to 2020...
May we find fulfillment and joy all through the year in Jesus name!

For my system which has been the soul of this thread, I'll at this moment call it a great success and a very standard backup system. All thanks to my discovery to Lifepo4 battery tech.

So far so good, my setup is over a month now and the system its doing amazingly well. I haven't gone off grid yet but, with the kind of power supply I get from PHCN, the system has been able to hold very fine.

The system runs up to 10-12 hours with the following load: TV, decoder, Fan and home theater without the battery getting up to 50% DOD.
Power supply for me now it's 24hours and my generator has been on holidays now.

Solar project loading as my charge controller has been secured. Note; I make sure all my charging devices are Lifepo4 compliance so is the charge controller.

Feel free to contact me if you need a Lifepo4 battery setup and I'll be glad to help and if you already have a Lifepo4 pack and will need accessories then you can hook me up.

Please, simmer down! No vex!!
When the limits of DIY are reached, it is time to go with the PROs.

I do contribute to DIY topics in general. However, people do ask DIYers if solar+inverter can carry heavier electrical loads. We design-build and maintain independent power systems that can carry any electrical load from 5kWh to 5MWh.

So, if you make any introductions, we will acknowledge you, accordingly, so you can earn from what you love!!!

@simydan..Kudos for this impressive thread..

I am currently in a desperate bid to have this set up, and I am willing to make the jump to Solar as well..

I have a few enquiries concerning cost of the LiFePo4, cost of your setup and some technical info..

I went to Alibaba and i saw quite a fair good deals on Lithium like the link below..

https://m.made-in-china.com/product/24V-200ah-32650-LiFePO4-Lithium-Ion-Battery-Price-877417665.html

My lil queries are:

1) Can we trust these merchants to deliver a good product and can your link offer us a cheaper and viable alternative grin

2) Does the absence of BMS incorporated into the system place us at an disadvantage?

3) Does your setup have the BMS? If no? What processes are you deploying to manage your battery charging demands.

4) What is the total cost of your project..?.

5) Can an area with a paltry 3 hours power supply per day match your energy performance, assuming the solar option isn't functional..

Abeg... No mind my plenty questions oo... Consider me a friend in neeeeeeeed.

The main reason i started this thread is to have a practical and a first hand experience with Lifepo4 battery performance over the traditional lead acid batteries. Because I'm a tech and diy person who believe there is always a better or new ways of doing things from the common or traditional ways. That's the reason I started researching and outsourcing for things I need for my personal project... I can say at this time i have made some level of success and have some amazing stuff in my home that are not common but are very compact and power efficient.
This item's range from ceiling fan with 20w power, a pressure booster water pump with 135w power, an inverter generator...

While I admit that I've really been successful with this projects even though one of it may had failed, I choose to make this one a topic and a live setup from idea to implementation for the sole purpose that if it work's fine for me, then anybody can implement it.

To your questions:

1. Yes! You can trust the quality of the product. As for the offer, my link can offer you a very good deal and a much better deal for commercial purpose.

2. The absence of BMS in the lithium battery tech is very risky and dangerous as such considered a bad practice.

3. My battery pack is factory build and has a BMS in it. Even at that the factory provided me with the recommended charger suited for my battery voltage and current. As well, i just got a charge controller suited for it too.

4. The estimated cost of my project is 225k
Battery=140k
14.6v 20a Lifepo4 charger=30k
12v 600w(900VA) pure sine wave inverter=40k
ATS=15k (though not compulsory if you wish)

5. This is where Lifepo4 is sweet especially if you are building according to your application because a manufacturer will always ask this question.
Yes! You can charge it full in 3hours if that is drawn to the attention of the builder. This is where BMS and the type of cells comes into play.
A spec of 12v 100ah or 12v 200ah can be built with a constant charging current of 35amps and 70amps respectively.
For 100ah battery (35×3=105amps)
For 200ah battery (70×3=210amps)
Note that this kind of build attracts extra cost as quality of cells and BMS are highly considered, and chargers with higher charging current are more expensive.
Mine is a 20amps charger so, it charges my 100ah battery full in 5hours if the battery is completely drained.

Hope I've not bored you with too much talk...

I'm most glad to start this thread as it is going to be an interesting and practical one...

I got tired of poor power supply by PHCN, coupled with the fact that I live in a house that is not metered and most tenants will fail to pay their power bill on time which eventually leads to the PHCN guys disconnecting our wire.

I have a generator that power's everything in my room including the AC as it's an INVERTER type but, the stress of going out at night to put on/off the Gen or on a raining day plus the cost of buying fuel every now and then made me thought of a backup inverter. If possible an off grid system, just to keep some of my basic appliances powered during outage or disconnect as the case may be.
So, I started my research and since I'm an electrical inclined person and an onliner who knows how to source for stuff's that may not be locally available, and since I needed a good system that no matter how small it would be but will worth it and deliver maximum satisfaction...

It was then I discovered the lithium battery tech and that they are superior to the well known inverter batteries around and then I discovered that they were of different types and more expensive than the traditional inverter batteries. This was where my problems began because I was running on a very tight budget but then I realized that a standard backup power is never cheap even when made with lead acid battery. As if that is not enough, I realized again that the super lithium batteries are not easy to come buy in Nigeria.

It was on this note I deepened my research and discovered that aside from the fact that these batteries have a lot of advantages to the other inverter batteries, like higher depth of discharge (DOD), longer cycle life of 2000-5000, less in weight and volume, higher charging voltage and current which result to faster charging with the term CC/CV ( constant current/constant voltage)...
I also found out that they are of different types and made up of different cells with the

1. Lithium polymer (lipo) being the first with individual cell voltage is 3.7v. These are cells used for cell phones batteries, laptop batteries, power banks and other portable backups and have a cycle life of 500-1000. They are mainly made from the 18650 cells

2. Lithium iron phosphate (lifepo4) with individual cell voltage of 3.2v. These cells are best used for larger battery set up for power backups and are more safer and more expensive to the 18650 3.7v cells, they have cycle life of 2000-5000. Lifepo4 cells are categorized into 32700, 32650, 38120, 40152...

3. Lithium titanate (Lto) with individual cell voltage of 2.3v these are very recent and far more expensive than any of the lithium battery. These cells are very rugged an can charge faster than you can imagine with a cycle life of 15000-25000

After having an in depth understanding of this battery tech I decided to settle for a lifepo4 battery for my inverter set up.
It is also very important to note that, since lifepo4 is not common and does not have the same characteristics as the traditional inverter battery we all know, their charging sequence is quite different as it requires a voltage of about 14.6v CV to charge and does not undergoes float charge like other batteries, with most inverters built in chargers designed with agm and other lead acid in mind it would be hard to charge a lifepo4 battery with these inverters except some inverters with the features to charge a lifepo4.
Proper care needs to be taken in terms of charging this batteries.

Because I'm a ware of this I decided to get a stand alone inverter and a stand alone charger.

This are the list if item I ordered for this project and because I want to keep it simple and cost effective I have to make do with what I can afford.

List of item's:
1. 600W pure sine wave inverter
2. 20a lifepo4 battery charger
3. 12v 100ah lifepo4 battery made from 32650 cells
4. Automatic change over switch (ATS)
5. Breaker's and cables

Since I'm still expecting these items I'll be stopping here and continue when all item's finally arrive then we can move to the next stage...

Hello, I would like to ask if the products has arrived

I will answer your questions in light of the "ridiculous prices" comment made by simydan.
Q1 - 4
The FOB price from China is USD920-USD1104 for the 24v 200ah battery. This sort of battery retails for about USD1650 on ebay-com. By the time you add international shipping and a modest mark-up profit, the retail price in Lagos may become about USD1700. At ₦360/ USD1, the price is ₦612,000 for 24v 4800Wh. Multiply by 2 for 48v 4800Wh - ₦1,240,000. Is this a cheap alternative? Wait...

Remember I am offering 5.6kWh, so the equivalent price for the above DIY setup is 5600/4800 x 1,240,000 = ₦1,428,000. For a DIY battery that only has internal BMS of suspect quality, has no warranty, no additional safety features, and is held together with nuts and bolts probably by a DIY person who may not have even a torque wrench, or enough electrical competency training!

Contrast with Ritility offer of ₦1,257,000 for a factory-built energy storage solution that is deployed in data-centres by top business enterprises. It has laser-welded connectors, manufacturer’s warranty of 5 years or 5MWh throughput, and multiple, redundant protective devices.
Is it really ridiculous pricing to pay less money for better quality components and access to professional help?

Q5
If the solar option is not functional, you will need large-capacity inverter-chargers to replenish your batteries during the 3 hours of PHCN or long periods of diesel/petrol generator input, to carry your loads for the remaining 21 hours. I will suggest you contact a professional solar contractor who may be able to find alternative sites for solar PV to power your loads.

Thank you for your well thought out response.. But you did agree a negligible number of Nigerians have the capacity to fork out over a million for just a battery backup system ..

It defeats the main essence of having a fairly steady source of power supply at a reasonable price offering...

Moreover, you used an Ebay cost rating in excess of $500 to extrapolate your estimates.. That will add a huge chunk of about N180K per 24V set up..

Personally, I did make do with a 24V 100AH LiFePO4 setup, since it covers my needs ..

Although, the prospect of a 24V 200AH system will be heaven for me...

Not a popular one that you know I bought it direct from the factory in China along with every other items listed earlier except for the breakers and cables.

Just for your curiosity, this are the pictures...

Hi, please how did you buy it directly from the factory? Which website?

U were right, I got a 3days ban just when I replied your questions. Why say I can't attend to urgent queries on my thread.

Nevertheless, I'll find time to reply your questions.

It's good to be back again!

Buying stuff from China it's not new to me because that's my line of business.

The goods I sell are sourced directly from China.

@Adeprince01

All products arrived since December, installation already done and testing is over a month now...

So far so good, test result has been very impressive.

Note: system is actually doing beyond my expectation but holding on to see how well it will hold over time.

I'll go ahead to answer your questions but note that I'll quote your comment and if for any reason I'm quiet again then it means I've been given another holiday. You can find my contact within the thread and reach me directly.
