Rangers manager Steven Gerrard wants to see the “real Joe Aribo” after moving the Nigerian international into a more attacking position in recent weeks.

The former Charlton star has played in a more advanced role on the right of Rangers’ front three and has linked up to great effect with Scott Arfield and James Tavernier down that flank.

Gerrard thinks giving the Super Eagles ace “less information and less tactical discipline” can help bring the best out of him and help fill a spot the Gers have struggled with this season.

“I’ve given Joe Aribo more responsibility and he’s benefited from that. It has also had a knock-on effect with Scott Arfield because he’s now playing as a midfielder facing the opposition goal, which is what we want from him,” Gerrard told the Daily Record.

“Joe came on to the scene and was really good, moving in from that left number eight position. Now he’s settled in, we believe that giving him less information and less tactical discipline will help the team. When we recruited him from Charlton, he was a central number 10, playing with his back to goal and with a licence to break the rules.

“Now he’s playing in a similar system for us, although more from the right side, and we want him to break the rules and have more freedom and show the real Joe Aribo from a more forward position.”

Aribo will have an important role to play tonight as Gerrard’s side head along the M8 to face Hibs at Easter Road in a crunch Scottish Premiership clash.

After Celtic extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to five points, the Light Blues can’t afford any mistakes against Jack Ross’ side.

Aribo’s recent move has also helped bring out the best in Scott Arfield in recent weeks so, hopefully, Rangers are on form tonight and can close back up to Celtic at the top of the table.

i have given up on the guy tey tey na una just dey stress una self. he really need to work extra hard to make it in professional football

his current ordeal was caused by the nff and coaches of our underage teams who pampers him too much by inviting him for games when he is yet to do anything tangible since leaving the shores of africa to europe.

he is always lazy,clumsy and too relaxed to my liking which is evident in his body language during games. talent without hard work na nonsense
