The police in Kano state will no longer handle criminal prosecutions on behalf of the state in magistrates’ courts.

Kano state attorney-general and commissioner of justice, Ibrahim Mukhtar, who revealed this to judicialsketch.com on Sunday said: “The criminal justice system in Kano has witnessed a major leap from the 24th day of December 2019 because we have put machinery in place to gradually take over the entire criminal prosecution from the police in the state.”

“We have started with 14 magistrates’ courts in No-man’s-land, where we have deployed three lawyers (state counsel) to prosecute cases before each of the 14 courts.

“In the same vein, we have also three lawyers to the three shariah courts at Kofar Kudu to prosecute shariah criminal cases.”

The commissioner said his office relied on section 211 of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, as well as the provisions of the newly promulgated Administration Of Criminal Justice Law of the state to relief the Nigeria Police from prosecuting criminal cases henceforth.

With the level of incompetecy exhibit by NPF I would think this is a good development.

However, I would like to hear from those that are well informed to enlighten us on this issues, more precisely on the pros and cons.

Very overdue.

those police prosecutors especially the ones at Nomansland Complex act like demigods. Let's not delve into how very corrupt and morally bankrupt they are.

Good one AG.

Exactly! I was waiting for any of the earlier comments to point this out.

Correct restructuring in progress. Just hoping the other parts are allowed to replicate same alongside other changes like is already happening in Kano.

Those magistrate courts will be starved of funds then the state will move cases to Sharia courts which is their ultimate goal

“In the same vein, we have also three lawyers to the three shariah courts at Kofar Kudu to prosecute shariah criminal cases.”
The bold is the real target, the headline is a red herring.
Ganduje is playing the 2023 game.
He cannot afford to lose out and give power to his enemies camp have gone the religious route.
His Sharia police would be firmly in his pocket by 2023 too, so that makes it a double punch for him.
He knows that all his sins would be forgiven as long as he acts more fanatical about religion than his opponents.

The positive side of this is that restructuring is becoming more mainstream.
If Kano can severe itself from national policing and laws, so can other states demand revenue independence.

I once said that Northerners are getting ready for possible break up of the country while IPOB and OPC are busy chest beating.
Things are gradually unfolding and soon Nigerian constitution will be worthless up North.

These guys are speeding up with their islamization but their Waterloo remains the South, particularly SE/SS. That will really be the make or Mar point. But I trust my brothers, we will rather die than accept the moon god and luckily for us, justice is on our side. Their greatest undoing would be their arrogance and feelings of invincibility. How can a country have two laws, one for the supposed conquered south and another for the north? At this rate, it has become very obvious to any discerning person that Nigeria is living in its last days. Go through history and check what happened in USSR, Yugoslavia, Sudan etc before everything went kaboom. Bring it on barbarians, we are waiting for you guys!!

Has the FG not be prosecuting cases in all the 774 local governments of the country? Why does good news gives you high B.P.? Seek psychiatric help before it's too late.

You want True Federalism, but you don't want the States to have their own laws and control their Judiciary. What do you call Federalism? This Restructuring that you have been screaming since we disgraced you at the polls in 2015, what is it about if States cannot manage their Judiciary?

You said Northerners should bring it on that you are waiting, the one they brought to your door steps in 1967 you did not wait to receive it. Instead it made you sacrifice three million of your brethren to the Yoruba gods of Ogun, Sango and Aiyelala
