I'm not sure it is overated. For a phone using a single lens, it outperforms even the s9 and phones many generations after. It's second best to a few in my opinion.

It is not overrated bro. Good details, saturation. Apart from slight exposure issue in the first image, the second is just perfect.

I've seen phones that are priced way lower than the pixel 2xl but take stunning pics that can easily beat the pixel's(especially redmi note 7 )
