What about India, is their government not doing better than Nigeria despite having over 1 billion population

India's government is a seabed of corruption, inefficiency, and nepotism.

They also have problems of power cuts, bad roads, illiteracy, etc.

Their economic growth is being driven by private enterprise. If they are ''doing better than Nigeria'' it's because folks like you are not being productive enough.

GDP per Capital has a factor of population in it.

respecting the fact that other factors also come into play but I think the population issue has to be addressed In respect to our limited resources.

population should be a driving factor for any country's economy but here in Nigeria the reverse is the case.

Nigeria population is exploding and all thanks to our brothers in the north who understand nothing like family planning.(almanjiri system)...I was listening to an interview on channels today and that Fulani man said "he has many children but does not know their number" (just imagine)

our dependent population is worsen by this large number of unplanned children and it has a huge effect on the GDP per capital.

I mean no offence but that's part of the fact

We just need a complete change of mindset. If we invest in agriculture sincerely it would build our gross domestic product in measures that we can't imagine. But if we choose to continue with oil, we would be on this free fall course forever. A crude oil based economy is not sustainable
What Nigeria needs is to sell technology. No country is making it on agriculture anymore. If you read the article properly you would have seen where it was stated about millions of Chinese moving away from agriculture as a measure of their development. Agric produce will not grow Nigeria.

But you have to be self-sufficient in food to the point it becomes VERY CHEAP. That is when the sector becomes saturated, and new business people will move into areas like tech. Every society that develops always achieves CHEAP FOOD first.

What is the meaning of 'poor'. Poor means lack as a result of not having. Now, is not that we don't have, we have, and alot of it but mismagement, corruption, ineptitude, nepotism...name it, have killed the economy. Till today, we are still recovering abacha loot.

We don't have sir!
That's a fact. Nigeria doesn't earn anywhere near $40 billion a year. Nigeria is VERY poor. Those stealing the little Nigeria has share the same opinion with people like you, you assume there's a lot when there's nothing. Until Nigeria becomes a very productive country it will only get poorer.

How many people in Nigeria are gainfully employed? Despite having one of the world's lowest minimum wages Nigeria still has one of the world's highest unemployment rate.

well neither rich or poor is like standing on the fence... Trying to deny a country's reality isn't being patriotic...

Nigeria is poor and can be rightly classified as "poverty capital", but it could become wealthy only if African Leaders stop being selfish and invest in her people

You have done well my friend.

Our population is growing faster the GDP qnd that's why we are far off South Africa and Egypt when comparing our GDP per capita..

We need to curb population growth especially in the north if our GDP per capita must improve.

No need adding lies to prove a point.

Use Google. Its educative and factual.

Being rude is not in anyway necessary! It is not called for. Your San Francisco is behind Moscow. I know some years back Moscow use to top the ranking and New York was second. Currently New York ranks 1st and Moscow 3rd. That does not in anyway change the import of my position.

European countries are largely homogeneous. Those that are not, have laws that make minorities feel a lot more comfortable. Most European countries made progress under authoritarian environment before they progressively became democracies. No democracy has been able to progress at China's pace in the last 500 years.

China and India have a similar population. Compare and contrast their progress.

Maybe the right phrase I should use is election circles because Nigeria is NOT a democracy.

If you say that Nigeria is not a democracy, are you saying that it is a dictatorship ruled by authoritarian governments

Anybody that belives this crap is smoking cheap weed! For example:

2. In India, the city of Mumbai alone has almost 60,000 millionaires; meanwhile, in Nigeria, there are just 12,300 millionaires in the entire country.

We all know this is highly incorrect, how was this calculated? In Lagos alone there are over 10,000 millionaires judging from bank account alone, when we now add assets such as houses, cars and so on, the number becomes even more. Let's not even get to Abuja where the big boys play...lol.

I look at the budget of all states in Nigeria, I shed tears. There is no hope. Even Lagos claiming the most commercialized is putting around $3billion budget money that can't even fix all roads in Lagos. We are going no where my people until you and I start thinking and adding value by being productive. Remember one company, Nokia By 2000, Nokia accounted for a mindboggling 4 per cent of Finnish GDP, 70 per cent of Helsinki's stock exchange market capital, 43 per cent of corporate R&D, 21 per cent of total exports and 14 per cent of corporate tax revenues. So Think people, think and create value.

Population growing is not the problem. Has our gdp increased by more than 50 percent in the last ten years?. The problem is about producing more. We are still heavily dependent on oil. Nothing will change if this doesn't change.

I recommend this book "Why Nation's Fail" for those who are desirous of knowing why Nigeria nay Africa and other so-called developing countries keep floundering. The book is on PDFdrive.com. After I read this book I stopped lamenting about our woes as a country. What do you expect when we have a country with an extractive political institution that has engendered a non-inclusive economy system? The way out, we need to dismantle our political institution and fashion out a workable system that is inclusive in nature. When we get it right in our political institution it will wear off on the economy institution.

Everyone knows that this nation does not have a very strong business and economic policy or blue prints.

When govt A makes a policy to favor him and his cronies. At the end of the tenure. Govt B comes in with its policy different from govt A, it will Infact cancel that of A and impose B, those people who are benefiting from policy A will automatically be crushed. Then govt C comes in.

Also let those policies be implemented to the last.

For example, the Nigerian govt banned the importation of foreign rice and so many other goods, as far back as GEJ regime, years later none of such policy was implemented. Those farmers that delved into rice cultivation then, lost out almost immediately, because, till today, foreign rice is still floded in the markets, even as PMB tried implementing by closing borders. Yet not all borders are closed yet. Some still keep smuggling it.

Let the govt make a policy and stand by it at all cost. Then you will see what will happen.

Let govt mandate all discos to give prepaid electric meters to all consumers, then you will see what will happen to the power sector. Sanction anyone that is not willing to abide by that mandate or even revoke their license. They will seat up.

Ban importation of certain caliber of goods that can be produced locally, then implement the ban to the last. You will see local manufacturers.

How long has our borders been closed? Because the govt is now a bit serious about it, see rice farms and mills springing up everywhere.

Good policies and implementation is our problems.and then good roads and security.

All Nigeria needs is just 10 years. We will be 50 times better than we are today.

Nigeria is rich but hungry due to mismanagement of few
You missed it 100%. Nigeria is poor but has the potential and assets to become rich.
The real wealth of a people is measured by per capita GDP and we have one of the lowest in the whole world. Even small nations like Kenya and Ghana have better standard of living than Nigeria.

We are like a family with a breadwinner that earns 200,000 but has 10 mouth to cater for and most of the nations bossing us are like a family with a breadwinner earning 160,000 but with just 4 mouths to feed. 200k into 10 places is 20k per family member but 160k onto 4 places is 40k per family member. The smaller of the two family is better off because of a higher per capita GDP.

What has government done about creating value?... Has our government encouraged our entrepreneurs?...any loan? Subsidy?.... Tex exemptions?.... About state government, the states are lazy and the governors lack ideologies on how to generate revenue. State governemtb wait for tax and monthly federal allocations without creating enabling environments. The little being generated will be looted one way or the other. We will back to square zero.

Real talk, man.

Nigeria's annual budget is 35 billion dollars. SA's annual budget is 125 billion dollars.

Why? Nigeria's main income source is oil and gas. SA is into mining gold, diamonds, precious metals, manufacturing, the services, tourism, etc.

WE NEED TO DIVERSIFY FASTER FROM OIL.

We are on the right track though. Agriculture and manufacturing are booming now. It will take time though.
