many people do not understand the power the US possess, that's why you keepnseeing grossly ignorant opinions on Nairaland, it's annoying and to be frank sometimes irritating.

Simply put sanctions is like telling your family members alongside your friends not to buy from and/or sell(any transaction) to mama nkechi or mama nkechi's shop. Anyone of your family members(friends) who does will lose the support they get from you.
This is the simplest way I can explain it. Now, why is it very effective? Because a huge percentage of the world are friends to the US and/or recieve massive support economically and militarily from the US. You don't want to lose those support from the US particularly military support, no country would in its right mind go to war with an ally of the US, you're technically fighting the US.


Furthermore, this also include affects the high seas, because the US takes care of the high seas security wise and others, the british handed that power to them after the second world war, the treaty is not much talked about because people do not want to study how the US became world power.
