The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) said the N1.17 billion fine slammed on the four biggest telecoms operators in the country should be paid as compensation to the over 100 million subscribers in the country.


The telecoms sector regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), had on May 11 ordered MTN Nigeria and Etisalat Nigeria to pay N360 million fines each.

It said Airtel Nigeria would pay N270 million while Globacom, Nigeria's second national operator (SNO), would pay N180 million.

The mobile phone companies were also ordered to pay their respective fines not later than May 25 or risk a fresh round of punitive fines pegged at N2.5million per day if they default in meeting Friday's payment deadline.

But NATCOMS in a statement at the weekend said the N1.17billion fine should not be paid to the Federal Government, but to subscribers as the FG is not the direct sufferer of the poor quality service.
