ELEMENTS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

There are two main elements of photography: the human element and the equipment (camera) element.
The human element is obviously the most important (from this author’s point of view). A lot of people feel like photography is all about aiming a camera at anything and then taking a shot and expect the camera to magically produce Pulitzer award winning photos. No. It does not work like that.

THE HUMAN ELEMENT

The human eye is the most important part of photography. The camera is only but a tool to capture what the eye sees so as to share with others. One has to train their eyes to appreciate aesthetics and beauty even in the most mundane things like a tea cup on a desk. Allow your mind to see the photo.

A good photographer has to:
i. Familiarize him/herself with the camera at his/her disposal.

ii. Have an eye for a good photo (a good eye for detail).

iii. Visualize a scene to get the best results

iv. Know when, where and how to shoot

v. Note that not every scene is worth shooting at

THE CAMERA

This is the second most important part of mobile photography, the sensor at hand. Once upon a time, photography was only possible by owning a bulky DSLR camera and a dark room where photos were “washed”. Later on, photographers could hook up their cameras to PCs and go through a rather tedious process of editing photos. Now life’s easier, you can do all on one device in minutes and move straight to the printing process. The days of buying Kodak films have almost come to an end.
To make optimal use of your camera, it has been arranged into modes that are specially designed and programmed for different situations.

Camera modes

Camera: this is the standard mode for taking pictures.

Portrait (bokeh mode): for taking shots (of human face) with blurred out backgrounds.

Lens blur: this mode is for taking shots of inanimate objects and then blurring out the back ground. The blurring can be done only after the photo is taken.

Panorama: For taking photos of a wide area or for landscape photography

Video: for recording videos

Night sight: for taking low light photos

Photosphere: for taking 360° photos

Time lapse: for speeding up and slowing down time while recording a video

Slow motion: for recording videos in slow motion.

Photo booth: for making shots with weird, funny and silly faces

Burst mode: this mode is designed for taking motion pictures or rather objects in motion e.g. a bird in flight or a sprinter in action. To achieve this, simply hold the shutter button for longer than a second. Keep the useful photos and delete all others.

Google Lens: shoot at a subject and Google’s AI will tell you what it is (requires an internet connection).

The Settings For your Camera

The important aspects of a camera to note are saturation, exposure, white balance, aperture, focus, shutter speed and ISO. The Pro Mode on the RN7 allows you to tinker with focus, shutter speed, white balance and ISO; while Gcam allows you to mess around with saturation, megapixel settings and quality night sight.
There is no fool proof method of setting up a camera. People have different tastes and you can never please anyone. Do what works for you as an individual. Try and tinker around with the settings a bit until you can find a natural fit for your photos. Once you find a winning formula, stick to it but don’t be too afraid to switch the settings around a bit. You can always return to your old winning formula.
