The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Friday apologized to Nigerians over the suspension of the Iju-Abeokuta free train ride during the 2019 general elections.

Amaechi tendered the apology during the monthly rail inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan modernisation project in Ibadan.

He said that the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) suspended the three months free train ride due to security and safety of passengers.

“It was suspended by the Chinese and the excuse they gave me was that they cannot allow it run because of safety, since they have not completed the second line but they are almost through with it.

“It is almost completed from Iju to Abeokuta. I want to apologise to Nigerians that they suspended it when they left the country, which I didn’t envisage, they will go back soon,” Amechi said.

Ordinary Lagos-Ibadan rail project has gulped billions of naira in loans and is taking forever to complete. How much and how long will it now take to complete this one that is about five times the distance? They should just focus on renovating existing rail lines, roads, bridges and completing the 2nd Niger bridge with the remaining time they have left. Any project they commence now will die a painful death once a new government comes in.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday commended the immediate past administration of ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan for embarking on massive projects that have been beneficial to Nigerians.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting in Abuja, the former Rivers State governor said his Ministry did not meet any comatose project on assumption of office.

He said the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration continued the projects of the previous administration because “We realised the impact of the recession.’’
Amaechi noted that the Kaduna-Abuja railway was nearly 80% completed by the Jonathan’s administration.

He said, “In the ministry of transportation, we did not meet anything comatose. We met an attempt to bring back our rail services.

“The Kaduna-Abuja railway was nearly 80% completed which we commissioned and commercial services have commenced.’’

Where will Nigeria government find the funds to finance a high-speed railway line between Port Harcourt-Maiduguri this is a railway line that will require electric-powered rails or overhead electric cables and expensive electric powered locomotive.

The Nigeria government is struggling to complete a standard gauge diesel-powered railway line between Lagos to Ibadan. The government must sell realistic visions to Nigerian.

My issue is,
Will PDP continue all this projects when they take over power from APC?
Cos PDP are specialist in delaying projects for many years while siphoning the funds to their pockets, which later leads to abandoning of the projects.

It is a welcomed idea but not realistic especially during this tenure/ regime.
I wish the FG could just finished the one they have started before jumping to another massive project. Lagos -Kano rail still battling to survive

He was a much younger young man with military dictator powers in 1983 to 1985 but was a failure then just as he is now.
