…65 New Buses For New, Old Routes Monday

…14 Ferries Join Waterways Tuesday

The government of Lagos State praises motorcycle and tricycle operators for complying with the restriction from six local government areas, major highways and bridges. The enforcement of the State Security Council’s order began on Saturday, February 1, 2020.
The level of compliance was over 90%. In fact, some of the ride hailing companies directed their riders to obey the directive. This is commendable. The high level of compliance has shown that Lagosians agree with the government on the need to stop the danger that commercial motorcycles and tricycles have become - a big threat to safety of lives and security of our people. They should stand firm in supporting the government.

The little discomfort experienced by commuters on some routes due to the absence of motorcycles and tricycles is noted. This will not last as alternatives are being rolled out.
A fleet of 65 buses will join the others on some major routes as from Monday , February 3, 2020: No less than 550 more buses are being expected. Besides, 14 ferries will be commissioned on Tuesday. This will further open up the waterways, reduce travel time on various routes and provide safe, dependable and comfortable alternatives for commuters.

The government is not unaware that enforcing this directive may lead to some job losses. The Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, plans to announce some measures to tackle the likely effects of the order, besides the programmes of various agencies, such as the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Office of Civic Engagement, Lagos State Parks and Gardens and others.

The government hereby warns all those who are planning to unleash violence on the state because of the ongoing enforcement to have a change of heart. Lagosians are peace loving and law abiding people, who will not embrace any disruption of their legal activities by failed politicians hiding under the evil of unwholesome activism. The law enforcement agents have been directed to ensure that nobody takes the law into his hands. The government places a very high premium on law and order in the interest of all Lagosians. It will not fail to act when peace is threatened.

Our government have ideal, the problem is when and how to implement it. i agreed, taking Motorcycles and tricycles out of major cities has it advantages like reduce accident, beautification......... but have they done their part before the implementation. Lots of roads are not Motorable, some are waterlogged, population is more than public transport and not all have personal cars..............

Taking cart before the horse. as usual

EXPECTED EFFECT
*Lots of people just lost their source of income which will likely cause surge in crime rate
*Some lagosians will have to be walking miles everyday while hustling

While I totally agree with the ban because of the sanity that obviously had to be restored on Lagos roads, I think the government should have provided small buses or cabs than can reach inner city roads where these keke and bikes normally ply, before effecting the ban.

Lagosians, especially those who don't own cars, are being made to suffer as there really isn't any means of transportation for short distances apart from the keke and okada...

I wonder why we always take actions without proffering solutions first... It wouldn't cost Lagos state anything to introduce mini buses and cabs for joint taxi rides to cater to inner city roads and intra-city transportation.

Those in Alausa didn't do their homework well, as usual!

LASG should also consider the following:

1. Fixing damaged roads aggressively and creating alternative routes.
2. Reviewing the ban on organized bike services like Opay, Gokada, Max etc.
3. Creating bus parks to eliminate traffic on the roads...

I hope the 90% compliance will be maintained or improved upon..

One thing I know for sure with Nigeria..
Nigerians will obey the regulations but with time when there is no enforcement ..it will become worse than it was before..

I would think the government would put the comfort of her citizens first before taking such a decision until I saw the security and sanity in it.

The days ahead are going to be tough for us all, but we will brave it.

. Suffering and smiling. Berger to Agege of #100 before was #200 as at 2/2/2020. While to Ogba of #50 was #100 because of no keke. Put things in place before banning anything. You don't go to work that's why you are hailing these people. Ban them from major roads like Lagos Abeokuta express way and co not places like Agege oko oba road, Capitol road, Meiran road and those places that abuses don't go and people are living there. My cousin living at Grammar school at Ojodu Berger have to trek from Bus stop to his house carrying his 4years old daughter. Something of keke #50. Don't be so quick to accept all manner of trash thrown at the masses by these heartless people.
If that is the way your brain processed our not supporting Lagos state government in this ban of okada and keke decision, then sorry you cannot be helped.
If you have programmed your mind to type jargons, anytime you see @ posts, without assimilating their posts, then that is on you.
Live with it Andy!

When Ambode said this Sanwo-Olu had mental problems, I thought it was a joke.

I don't have problems with the ban on bikes, but why include tricycles which are the last-mile means of transport in a place like Lagos?
What kind of amateurish decision is that?

Sanwo-Olu needs to sit down and use his head to think, not jumping about. This is a policy, security, political, economic and welfare issue. He should not because of 1 spoil 5.

65 buses to replace all those maruwa and Okada? This ban rendered thousands of people jobless and you are replacing them with just 65 buses.

This is what happens when a nation elects a mad man.

The fool should have waited for the 550 buses to arrive first.

The irony is, even those with cars will be severely affected - other things being equal. The traffic that'll be experienced in these times will be record breaking. Ban is the regular regulatory tool used by a government lacking creativity.
