Some policemen on Thursday were reportedly disgraced after they tried to seize a power bike belonging to a Lagosian while on his way to work.

According to the facebook user who also happened to be the man in question; Nmutaka Chikwendu stated that he was accosted by the officers of the Nigerian Police after they sighted him on his power bike while on motion , and before they could take any action, passers-by had already surrounded the officers, asking if the bike was a commercial motorcycle popularly referred to as 'Okada.'

The Policemen however, turned a deaf ear to the lamentations of the passersby and blatantly refused to release the power bike to the owner but things turned around when one of the passersby put a call through to the Police Command and it was finally released.

The Facebook user Nmutaka Chikwendu had to narrate his ordeal:

So.....I was heading to work this morning dodging massive potholes and meandering through heavy traffic. The Nigerian Police decided to arrest me because "bikes are banned". The 2 things that stood out for me the most were:
1. The speed with which a huge crowd built up. Within a short while people were yelling at the cops. "Is this one okada"?
2. How unintelligent our cops are. A team of 4 senior officers with guns could not say anything meaningful beyond "they sent us signal to arrest all bikes"

A good Samaritan parked his car...showed them the broadcast sent by Lagos state police command. They refused to read it. He then called the numbers in the broadcast and the policemen refused to speak with their superiors. The man put his phone on speaker and we could all hear the police command asking if it was okada and the whole crowed roared "No!" Our street crew cops refused to budge. The Samaritan eventually called their DPO who asked them to release me....then they started looking for one Officer Ojo of Ifako police station who took my bike key and went away.

Crowd kept building.....policemen became scared. Tried to disperse crowd. People refused to budge. I actually started getting worried and started asking people to leave. They said they wouldn't move until I was released. Eventually the Ojo fellow sauntered out with my key and I started my bike....revved it a few times which drew cheers from the crowd.....and continued heading to work.

every rule that has to do with banning is a medium to flex muscle and make money by police

The same Police will still make use of ordinary bike for different purposes, most especially for public transport.
Don't mind them

I wonder if these policemen are actually orientated before being unleashed on the streets or are just being deliberately dense for sake of the bribes they want to extort from road users.

Very useless people.

this is one of the reasons why i hardly felt pity for them whenever they find themselves in a terrible situation or when something bad happens to them, because there is no difference between their heart and the Colour of their uniform.....that was how i overheard one telling his colleague how it would have been more profitable if the bike where being sized rather than being impounded, so that the people whose bikes are being sized will still come back to bail it with huge amounts of money.

stupid people, trying to eat from someone else's misfortune.

Don’t blame them...

Yoruba doesn’t have a name for POWERBIKES ....

Everything is OKADA.

Modified: For those quoting/mentioning me, I am full flesh Yoruba man. And anyone with his right senses will know my comment was pun intended.

It takes nothing from the fact that The Yoruba language does not have names for powerbikes. I don’t understand how that is a problem with you lots?

Illiteracy is not a disease, it is something worse.

Our Policemen need a total orientation programme, especially at this time.

Police.

They are such a disgrace.

Like seriously many of them are so stone age era.

They came to raid our cafes years back, and met a stiff resistance (I don't send them aside not liking them). After tensions were cooled down, around 3 of them with "iron bars" rank sat down in one of available computers.

The one without rank was beckoning to the reception and me thinking they wanted to start trouble, came with double. It was not what I thought.

They wanted assistance to open "Yahoomail". They (four of them) knew next to nothing about opening an email address. I had to assist. Free of charge. After they left, I went inside to weep.

Policemen are the most useless set of people.... I know there are good ones bit the bad eggs just make it impossible for me to like them.

Exactly same thing happened .... A Naval friend of mine came visiting and we decided to go and hang out at a cool spot. On our way there was a road block with policemen, they stopped our bike and asked us to come down.

Despite telling them that the Okada is private and we were friends actually going out they corked guns and pointed to our heads and seized the bike. My naval friend kept quiet , he just told them to tell him their station that he is coming to bail his bike .... The idiots were busy shouting "come with your #50,000".

He went back to Naval base and came with a whole lot of naval guys went to the station and requested to see the corrupt policemen or else they will turn everywhere upside down. You need to see the way the Foolish policemen were shaking and begging .. U will not believe that they are same people who cocked and pointed guns to our head. My Naval friend and his guys collected the bike and took the men away.

I Can only Imagine the Kind of drilling they would have received at naval base!!!!

Imagine how they delayed the man unnecessarily despite all efforts.. Are they even supposed to arrest Power bike users? Does Power Bike look like a commercial bike?

The Nigerian Police consists of at least 85% gun freaks, trigger happy miscreants and illiterates who just found themselves to be in that Uniform. They miss no opportunity to exhibit their foolishness, greed, incompetence and illiteracy whenever it arises. Lord knows if i had my way into position of power, i will scrap the entire Police force and do a total reset by employing new ones who are more competent, well qualified, enlightened and have undergone proper training...

THE RANK AND FILE GUYS MOST TIMES DISPLAY GROSS UNINTELLIGENCE.
UNTIL POLICEMEN ARE RECRUITED VIA A PROPER RECRUITMENT PROCESS THAT SIEVES THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF, THE SAME VICIOUS CYCLE MAY JUST KEEP REPEATING ITSELF.
