But Nissan ‘s new acoustic metamaterial is simpler.

The novel isolation system arises from a combination of a reticular structure and a plastic film that controls air vibrations to limit the transmission of noise from the broadband frequency (from 500 to 1200 Hz), such as road sound and of the engine. The Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen, G-Class for friends, has always been much more than an extravagant off-road vehicle for the masses. Over the years, it has been used as a military, ambulance or armed vehicle throughout the globe. The machines we bring you today belong to the first group. Specifically, the Swiss army, who has been a user of several of these models for a long time.

If you ever wanted a timeless collection of military vehicles that recall the private military strength of a villain from an action movie, Lorinser, a company specializing in visually and mechanically modifying star signature models, has more than thirty Mercedes Class G for sale right now. At its Winnenden facilities, about 20 kilometers northeast of Stuttgart (Mercedes’s house), Lorinser has numerous specimens with short or long wheelbase, three or five-door bodies, between four and eight seats, and both Soft roof format as rigid. Depending on the conditions of the chosen one, the mileage (between 45,000 and 202,000 km) and the model year (from 1989 to 1996), prices vary between 15,200 and 19,500 euros.

It’s time to cross out the Dacia Duster and Suzuki Jimny that you might have in mind to face the toughest terrain without spending a fortune. These Mercedes G-Class, although used by the army, enjoy a fairly dignified appearance. Even some of them have received a complete restoration with new wheels, fenders, paint, LED headlights or even an interior that looks like a premiere. But of course, the price to pay for such a unit is already close to 50,000 euros.

It should be remembered that Lorinser is one of the 46 dealers in Germany that can use the “Mercedes-Classic Partner” label. All units have the same drive unit: a 2.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 116 hp (230 GE) associated with an automatic torque converter transmission with four ratios. As a vehicle for military work, the power is sent to the ground through a system of all-wheel drive with rear differential block.

As you can imagine, cars are quite Spartan. The models with the canvas roof have longitudinally mounted seat benches in the rear, while the taller ones have a metal table and two individual seats with their own armrests, as if they were shelves. All functional and easy to clean. Being a model signed by Puch, one could say that any of these Mercedes-Benz G-Class is like the Swiss army knife of cars. If you’re wondering why it’s worth talking about a bunch of old military G-Class, here are two answers. First, because it is a G-Class, an iconic car that is always worth talking about. And, secondly, you just have to do a quick search on the Internet (or let your imagination fly) to see the infinite number of converted SUVs. And it is that ex-military vehicles can become excellent bases for future projects.

The four-cylinder Toyota Supra is coming to Europe

You wait decades to see the new Toyota Supra, and then it turns out that two come at once. First, we have met the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder, and now this comes: the Toyota Supra four-cylinder. Although this version was already marketed, at the moment it was only available for Japan. It will arrive in Europe in the coming months.

Toyota is open about the fact that the less powerful Supra will take a wider clientele to the car, as it should be cheaper, although at the moment we don’t know how much. However, less powerful does not mean it is less fun to drive. A smaller engine also has its advantages. Do not look for changes abroad, because there are none. Like the six-cylinder engine (and many components), the 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit is turbocharged and of BMW origin. It produces 258 hp of power and 400 Nm of torque, and is combined with an automatic torque converter transmission with eight ratios.

However, these figures are not the most important, because this Supra is handled better. It is the one you should choose if you like curves. And I don’t say it, Toyota says it. It is not only that the 2.0-liter block is 100 kilos lighter than the six-cylinder version, it is that the weight now also presents a perfect balance between both axes.

The slower Supra is here, and it is still fast enough to make you lose your card in the blink of an eye, and on top of that it will be more enjoyable to wear when cornering, if you believe in Toyota. Sometimes, less is more. In terms of equipment, the 2.0-liter Toyota Supra will come with 18-inch alloy wheels, a four-speaker audio system with an 8.8-inch touch screen and sports seats lined in black Alcantara. Standard safety equipment includes pedestrian and cyclist detection with braking function, lane maintenance assistance with active steering, intelligent speed assistance and road signaling assistance.

Optionally, you can opt for three packages: Connect, Sport and Premium. The first adds satellite navigation and connected services, the second improves handling with benefits such as an active differential, improved brakes and an adaptive suspension, and the latter changes the audio system to a 12-speaker JBL signed. Last but not least, at the time of its European debut, only 200 copies of the limited edition “Fuji Speedway” will be offered. This version is highlighted by a metallic white paint, 19-inch wheels in contrast, red mirror housings and decorative carbon fiber inserts inside. The four-cylinder Toyota Supra is scheduled to arrive in European markets starting in March.

Way to go: assembling a W12 engine, the jewel in Bentley’s crown

Internal combustion engines have something that makes them especially attractive. Is it because of its apparently simple operating complexity? Or because of the visual wonder of seeing all the pieces work in unison? Regardless of the answer, it’s a nice thing to see. And especially if we talk about large mechanics, such as the W12 Bentley engine.

This is one of the most interesting mechanics for sale today. This twelve-cylinder block is called with a “W” because, instead of having two “V” shaped benches, the cylinders are arranged in two narrow (15º) six-cylinder blocks joined by a crankshaft, forming a larger grape at 72 º. The W12 used in the different models of the house such as the Bentayga, Flying Spur, Continental GT or Mulsanne, is a 6.0-liter biturbo unit. The assembly takes place in a fairly clean and successful room, both by computer brains and by robotic control and human hands. The upper end is particularly robust, with chain-operated cams and cast in aeronautical grade aluminum, just like the rest of the block.

The W12 engine has been defending the most elite versions of the Volkswagen group since 2001, being also the heart of Bentley since it was acquired by the German giant in 1998. It was born with the idea of ​​competing with the competition’s V12 propellers, but with a design very particular that managed to save a significant amount in development costs and space within the span. Its dimensions, practically square, are similar to those of a V8. This engine has evolved over time to adapt to new times, especially in terms of consumption and emissions. Initially designed as an atmospheric engine, it was redesigned shortly after to adopt a pair of turbochargers that remain until today. Currently, all W12 production is carried out at the Bentley factory in Crewe, United Kingdom, and is the only brand of the group that equips them.

The first stages of engine assembly occur mainly under the responsibility of a human hand, but with the help of specialized machinery that facilitates the work. The block sits on a support, and a technician lowers the crankshaft in place. From there, two employees cooperate to install the 12 pistons. Then, lower the cylinder heads to their place. Once the turbos and wiring are in place, the switchboards wait together for the next step. Next, the engine / gearbox unit arrives to be installed in the front auxiliary frame and along with all its components. When everything is complete and the assembly seems ready, there is one last stop, because Bentley gives the powertrain a check in a bank to do a few tests before installing.
