Glaucoma AKA the silent thief of sight!, it can be hereditary or acquired. Its a group of eye disease that leads to Optic nerve damage usually characterized by ocular hypertension (increased eye pressure). There are of two types: Open angle glaucoma and closed angle glaucoma (acute).

Now why is it called "the silent thief of sight"? The disease do not affect your central vision initially thereby giving you the false believe that nothing is wrong with your eyes. Nerves cells damage usually starts from the periphery, the ones responsible for side Vision. Note also that these peripheral nerve cells are populated by cells called (Rod Cell) this cells only sees black and white, so since we are in a colourful world we barely notice that something that may lead to Reduced Vision or possibly total blindness is happening to us.

However, the good news is that the disease can be detected at an early stage. The reason why people are scared of this condition is because of Nigeria factor i.e we don't go for medical checkup unless we are in pain or something abnormal is discovered. So most patients usually become aware they have it at moderate to severe stage.
The only way to avoid stories that touches the heart is to have a regular eye checkup.

On a foot note, if you have already be diagnosed of glaucoma, fear not for there are remedies even though cure hasn't be discovered yet. For now no cure for glaucoma for now, but you can manage it with some eyes drops, am in my mid 30's and I have the so call glaucoma, dont fear it not going to take your eyes away, not untill you stop using your medication

Yes it cost intensive to treat it but it pay off, you have to spend minimum of 3k to 5k for eyes drop per month

Yes glaucoma is hereditary and no it can't be cured permanently. However, if you're diagnosed with glaucoma and depending on the state of damage at time of diagnosis, you can live a very satisfying life as long as you adhere to treatment given to you. PS: Go get your eyes checked, you'll be fine

@op, a family history of glaucoma puts you at a higher chance of developing the disease hence it's necessary for you to be screened for glaucoma.
Secondly, there isnt any known cure yet for glaucoma. It can only be managed to prevent further damage to your eye hence early detection is key. Do not be misled by those offering you a cure; they know little to nothing about the disease.

Truly there are some products that can promote eye health but they aint curative of any eye condition. My old man went for his usual glaucoma check up yesterday and I went with him. Doc on duty decided to run a quick check on me with some hand held device and informed me there and then that I’ve got it too but advice to do a confirmation check.

And it turned out I definitely have glaucoma but at the early stage. There you have it bro it is definitely hereditary according to the doc.

I advice you go for check and if positive you resume treatment ASAP early detection is key as it can be aggressive sometimes.

Glaucoma tend to run in families which means it is hereditary, if there is an ocular history of glaucoma in ur family there is about 80% chance of you having it in the long run. But for now you may not experience symptoms because glaucoma takes years to manifest and at the time it manifest damage may have been done to your eyes, so the way out is for you to always go for regular eye examination where an eye pressure test will be done for you. Mind you glaucoma can also be acquired through excessive smoking and taking of hard drugs, so someone who has an history of glaucoma in the family and also engage in excessive smoking and taking of hard drugs will automatically develop the condition in time and the severity may be worst.
Glaucoma has no permanent cure but can be damaged with anti- glaucoma medications when it is detected on time but when some percentage of vision has been loss the drugs can only but work to preserve the vision let but not to restore what is loss.
