I support Al u said, she can't be freed cos she's complicit.
But I'ld say she's gullible and not stupid. Most young people are. They most live close-by in the same area. She's not just a facebook friend. He knows her somehow.
However I say she's gullible because he wouldn't tell her he's sending that amount. He will just say I want to send u 3k or 30k, then he will claim he mistakenly sent 300k and ask her to bring it to him and maybe keep extra 5k for her troubles.
Most ladies will fall for this scam.
Just check in ur nearby police station and see the number of such cases ongoing

Hmmm Original Street Guyman, You really sabi the FORMAT well well. I salute your Intelligence!!!

No issues with the guy. He stole, got caught and will pay for it. As for the girl, I'd have said she should be released but seeing that a man you have never met before suddenly transfers 300k to your account and then you go see him for the night? She should be grateful to you that you are punishing her well...this will keep her from being used by ritualists if she has ears. Weldone @op

The guy was clever but unfortunately by half. The lady should be thankful that the man didn't leave him with a 5000k debt and prison sentence if he had succeeded.

By morning he would have collected that girls atm and made physical withdrawal from the nearest machine and disappeared into thin air.

He didn't intend to give the lady the 300k. He just used her account to clean the money. He would have collected at least 280k back from her.

Look, if a middleman feigns ignorance and can convince the authorities that they knew nothing of the money and didn't know it was a product of money laundering, they often let them off the hook.

There is nothing overly suspicious of a "supposedly" rich guy sending 300k to a girl.

It happens all the time. Guys with legit money have done far worse for women they haven't seen.

The girl neither obtained the money by deciet or trickery, so she cannot be seen as guilty in the eyes of the law.

This is all based on the report, wether there is more to the story remains to be seen.

Again, there's a difference, middle men or 'picker' as you call them, as they are often very much aware of what they are doing. They know it's a product of fraud and they get a cut for transferring the money.

Also, how you can even equate an established money laundering scheme to a lady 'harmlessly' being transferred 300k from a supposed "sweetheart" is even more perplexing than your stance in this argument.

U are just painting Scenarios ...:so it's now a rich guys sending 300k to a random girl ?? Is this one a rich guy...??
Again, how is this woman different from a picker claiming he doesn’t know the funds were fraudulently acquired??.....

the same way u are saying pickers often know it’s proceeds of fraud before allowing themselves collect it is the same way this woman too cannot be let go. she cannot say a random man sent random 300k and as a human being there’s no need for due deligence on her part...

Okay, lets assume this man took the 300k to an apple store to purchase an iPhone.

How then is this case handled?

Does the apple store get sued?

Does the salesman get's fired for not grilling the man about his source of income?

Or is Steve Jobs exhumed from the grave to return the cash?

Because I think it's "girl" that's getting you stirred up. Let's replace girl with "business" or "store owner."

Like I said, from the story, nothing indicates that the girl knows that the guy stole the money.

Again, you justify my point. There is nothing different from this woman and a "picker" that can successfully convince the authorities that he wasn't aware that he was transferring/laundering money for criminals.

Of course, with laundering money, a lot more is involved than just accepting the money.

Nowhere in this story is it quoted that the lady knew he stole the money.

Again, if a friend of mine decides to send me 500k today, the prerogative lies with me to either accept or refuse the money.
Either way, receiving money on its own is never a crime. In the girl's defence, she is oblivious to the actual source of the fund and all she has to do is cooperate and return the money if compelled to.

Again, nobody goes to just "lodge" with a thief, especially when they have no idea that they are lodging with a thief.

It's like all these sorry tales of innocent people being accused of being fraudsters because they happen to be in the same company - usually by accident - with fraudsters.

If that man had gone to buy a brand new phone with that same stolen money, does the police go and toture the shop owner? Is the shop owner supposed to interrogate the source of the fund before accepting it?

In this case, Why should the girl be harrassed too?
I'm forming my facts from the story, which does not state that the girl was privy to him being a thief or involved in the whole scam.

All I see is an opportunistic thief that happened to pry on the ignorance of a poor old woman.

As you can see, there is a logical thinking to my argument.

If you are going to be sentimental, or unnecessarily petty in your reply then don't bother.

Enjoy your weekend.

If that's the case, then the lady can't claim she doesn't know the man. And if the man is well known to her, then she has to provide convincing proof that she was completely ignorant and could not have reasonably realised the money was proceeds of crime.

Exactly my point. But even better, because she dosen't have to 'provide' proof.

The onus lies on the accuser to provide proof against the accused, and not the other way round.

So long as nothing can tie her to being aware that the man stole the money, she is as free as a bird.

Hence, my disaapointment at the way she's being treated. The police just wants to cajole her into saying she was aware to probably extort her (my wishful thinking).

Bros, if you're on the road, having a random conversation with the thief and the police swoops in, the onus is on the police to explain why you should be arrested.

However, you're in a hotel room at night with a thief, the stolen goods is in your possesion and the police swoops in, the onus is on you to explain why and how you are innocent.

Both scenarios are similar but the circumstances in the latter puts the onus on the lady

You're misunderstanding the law. Because in Nigeria police randomly arrest people without any factual cause or reason. (Guilty until proven innocent).

In the actual sense, you are INNOCENT until you are proven guilty by whoever arrested you. In this case, the Police via a competent court of law or whichever instituted authority.

Also, you normally cannot just randomly arrest an alleged criminal. You can detain them temporarily, but you 'usually' require a warrant to effect an arrest.

Again, before a warrant is granted, the police has to establish enough evidence or cause for an arrest.

You've got the law mixed up. But it's understandable, you are used to the 'nigerian' way of doing things.

I’m not stirred up cos it’s a girl, I’m only saying what’s obtainable in this very scenarios, while u are are trying to equate unrelated scenarios with this one that’s clearly fraudulent...

if she a business owner like apple...scenario has changed....cos apple is an established collector of such kind of money in an everyday business transaction...they can’t be accused of conspiracy..scenario is completely different...

There are cases sales reps gets arrested for such...i was once a banker...and a young foot baller that was not known walked into our branch with 26million cash to make a deposit...he said he just changed the cash from malams at sabo

..I refused as the head of cash unit then... He called our my contact center and complained that we refused him service and that he wasn’t gonna leave cos leaving is now risky as a lot of people in the branch were getting aware of the issue due to his lack of decorum.....
See business owners exercise due deligence more than the way u think...especially in this era of fraud...if u don’t fit the profile of someone that can have such in cash they can refuse u service.
The popular Samuel Etò was humiliated on the streets of london cos he was black trying to buy a 36k pounds wrist watch...they used delay tactics on him no knowing the shop owners had called the cops... funnily the cop that arrived was a football fan who knew Eto as cash loaded footballer...

See it's different in your case.

Legally, nobody should have 26 million in cash without a good reason. So in that instance, you acted right.

But in this case, no law stops anybody from receiving 300k.

Can't you send 300k to your mother or friend today and not reveal the source of the money?

If you happen to have stolen the money, should your mother/friend be in handcuffs in a police cell suffering for it?

Like I said, the girl was oblivios to the source of the money, or so the story says.

As long as the girl agrees to repay the money sent to her, and nothing ties her to the money, she should be set free.
