ECOWAS Challenges Nigeria’s Border Closure, Sets Up Committee by Rikidony(m): 10:33pm On Feb 11, 2020
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has formed a committee to study and make a full report on the closure of Nigerian land borders.

Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, who disclosed this yesterday, said the decision was reached Sunday at an extraordinary meeting of the heads of government of West African nations on the sidelines of the 33rd AU summit in Ethiopia.

The committee, headed by President Roch Marc Christian Kabore of Burkina Faso, would examine all the countries affected by the closed boundaries and summit its report to the body for further decisions.

“The President of Burkina Faso is charged with undertaking a full study of the situation, make a report and then we take it from there” the statement cited Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama as saying.

No timeline is given for the submission of the report
In August last year, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the partial closure of the country’s boundary with Benin to curb smuggling of rice, a staple. In October, his administration further restricted the trade of all goods across the land borders to curb smuggling from Benin and Niger into the country.

So this border closure is hurting our neighbours?

Perhaps we should start taxing them for the benefit they derive from us!

I totally support the closure of the border.....

We've been rubbished over our porous borders and now we decided to follow due process.

Ghana should go and relax..... They can't use ECOWAS to open our borders.....

Biko, someone should tell me the head and the tail of this border closure, cos the cost of buying a bag of local rice is still expensive, insecurity is still on the high side. This border closure some people are benefitting from it monetarily

*They said we are the poverty capital of the world.
Our Darling President decided that we should just close our poverty stricken borders to the outside world so that we can manage on our own.
Suddenly, scarcity hits Benin republic, Togo, Niger.
Demonstration hits Ghana. Vietnam, Thailand and other envoys all came calling.*
*Their economy depends on our poverty.

They are begging the most corrupt nation on Earth to do business with them.
They have no buyers for their commodity.
In our neighbors domain, scarcity have hit them hard.*

It turned out they need us more than we need them.
We have all it takes to stand alone as a nation.
All we need is a plan and a willing leader.

God bless Nigeria*

Good one on this border closure by the FG.

At the end of it all, SANE Nigerians will enjoy all the benefits.

A drastic change requires a drastic solution.

WE continue to STAND WITH THE BORDER CLOSURE,
It is for the good of all sane, honest and hardworking Nigerians.

Again, God bless Nigeria.

Suddenly Nigerians have accepted and given support to the border closure.

As usual, we have adapted and moved on even in the face of general inflation.
