The wall is not cutting off Mexico. It's to curb illegal entry via the porous areas. The walls have gates through which anyone can enter legally.
We could try that too.

Yet they have customs but still have porous areas right? You admitted so yourself.

Well Nigeria has done same. We have blocked the porous areas and asked you all to use the airports to freight your goods in. That is the door we have left open same way the Americans have a gate in their wall

This is an absolutely obtuse way of reasoning.
Do you know the difference between land, air, sea?
Imagine asking Benin republic and Ghana to load a ship and sail it on the Atlantic to Nigeria when they can make that journey in 4-6hrs by land. Does dat sound reasonable to you?

Besides you surely can't compare the land mass between Mexico and US with that of Nigeria and Benin. Not to mention how vicious a neighbour Mexico are. Even at that, are you saying no land trade between US and Mexico now?

I wonder if the border is truly closed cus I still buy foreign rice 22k n turkey dey for my area Wella. It was last year that the border was closed. This year those army n mopol are bringing it Wella. When last did u hear custom intercept xyz? It was all initial gragra

Either the foreign rice you bought was smuggled or if was imported through the ports and then the importer was made to pay really high tarrifs.

So because we have customs other nations should keep exploiting us?

I guess US customs and immigration are also non existent yet Trump chose to build his wall cutting off Mexico.

If that's the case then why is Nigeria even part of Ecowas ?

Ecowas was meant to be like NAFTA. A free trade Bloc composed of West African countries.

This is a very obtuse way of reasoning. Perhaps you thought items are not being allowed in through the borders. You are so wrong.

The reason behind the closure is so smugglers can no longer smuggle but come legitimately through the borders as they pay all duties required rather than Dodge after paying duties at Benin.

Those who ship to Benin and pay duties there only to now smuggle same into Nigeria without paying duties should desist from that and those items on the no import list should be stopped.

The airfreight option is open as an alternative for those who feel cheated

Imports through the land borders are still going on and those complaining are obviously those who before now have been smuggling in their goods without paying the duties attached.

Benin cannot be among the top 5 importers of rice in the world just so they can smuggle same into Nigeria.

The money they spend on importation of rice which they smuggle into Nigeria and gain from it is what we lose to them.

We cannot keep getting exploited. I suggest you read up on the reason behind the ban and if imports are not being allowed in at all so this obtuse reasoning of yours can cease.

Being a member of ECOWAS does not mean you take each other's countries and trade laws for granted.

Free trade does not mean you should violate bans on goods not allowed into your receiving country

A very big blow to the igbo business men and women. The igbos thrive more where there's choas! However, it's a welcome development as many fake/inferior and clone goods will be stopped. At least for the time being, nawah remain small make alaba boys take produce human beings. Let them go through the seaport, wayo people.

Obasanjo did it and there were positive results especially from external countries, Buhari is on point!

*Their economy depends on our poverty.

They are begging the most corrupt nation on Earth to do business with them.

ou mean goods are still passing through the land borders to Nigeria? Are you that ignorant or you're deliberately trolling me?
So you mean Ghana has been asking Nigeria to allow goods from their country be smuggled into Nigeria? Have you been to the borders to see abandoned goods there?
You need to get the right info before you argue.
The fact you keep talking about airfreight shows how ignorant you really are. So you think hide and skin which Nigeria exports via it's land border to Niger and Mali can be loaded by air? Do you know the cost of moving things by air? Not to mention the volume of goods that can be so moved.

FYI, Nigeria had an agreement with Benin republic to allow ships meant for Nigeria berth at her ports while the cargoes are moved into Nigeria via roads. Benin collects duties for the goods but those same goods end up getting smuggled into Nigeria. How do you now blame Benin for your ineptitude.

Thank God you've been cured of the stupidity of comparing land border to sea and air. What remains is dis madness of blaming Benin republic for the corruption and ineptitude of your customs.

It is now apparent you are Ghanaian which is why this is hurting you.

Make use of the alternatives provided as Ghanaians. You share direct borders with Togo and will get to Benin before you get to Nigeria. Since you have about 4 countries directly sharing borders with you why is that one country which is 2 borders away your main headache?

Nigeria reserves the right to do as she pleases within her own borders.

We are done here

You're back to being obtuse now. Pity. You should realise that the closure also affects your countrymen too. Ghanaians are not the smugglers we're talking about. Neither are they the corrupt customs officials. They don't trade in hides and skin nor do they export palm oil from Nigeria. They don't sell clothing and electronics to west African countries from Onitsha and Aba. Nor are they involved in importing goods through Benin republic seaports. All these activities are carried out by Nigerians. It's shallow of you to think everyone is a Ghanaian or gives a Bleep about them. You don't cut your nose to spite your face.

We've been rubbished over our porous borders and now we decided to follow due process.

Ghana should go and relax..... They can't use ECOWAS to open our borders.....

I thought with the closure of border within 3-4 months we will notice some difference in our economy but till now nothing is showing forth.

Things are still expenses,I was thinking if these people decide to use the right channels,we will make more money but yet the government is still planning on borrowing more money.

Ecowas is complaining because they don't know how things work in Nigeria, they are viewing it from a moral and just angle not knowing that things are done upside down in Nigeria. Border closure is more effective down south unlike the north were it is still business as usual. Most Ecowas trade routes are down south, expectedly, they will feel the heat.

So this border closure is hurting our neighbours?

Perhaps we should start taxing them for the benefit they derive from us!
It is affecting them and also affecting us. Nigeria is a big market for most of them meaning they would have issues with their revenues. And the closure of the border is also causing increase in inflation in Nigeria which is not also good for our economy.

Even though everyone is rejoicing because of the impact it has on Nigeria's economy, I don't consider this a smart move. Imagine if all the countries we sell our goods to shut down their borders in retaliation.

If Buhari feels that there's too much smuggling into Nigeria, it means that the customs is not doing its job. Yes, it is an internal problem, so it should be sorted out in-house.

Notice that there are Nigerian businesses that export through the land borders, and they are out of business now. This means that when the border is finally reopened, their customers would have sourced for other reliable suppliers.

Again, the solution is not closing the border. Apparently, Nigerian customs is the problem and should be reformed with many officers with questionable characters laid off.

Buhari has been a bundle of disappointment because if Sunday Ehindero could stop the police from collecting roadside bribe in his time as IG, Buhari can sanitize the customs.

It's very annoying that Buhari hasn't been able to "clean up" one institution of government even though he tells us that he is fighting corruption.
Thanks .you have just said it all.

Arrant crap! Is it not the duty of nigerian customs and other security agencies to stop illegal imports? Why blame other countries for Nigeria’s inability to police its land borders?

If every country in the world closes its borders to nigerian exports, will nigeria survive?
