Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) on Wednesday cautioned that setting free alleged repentant Boko Haram members could be dangerous to the society.

Babakura Jato, commissioner of information in Borno State had recently said that 1,400 repentant Boko Haram suspects had been released in three tranches since Operation Safe Corridor programmed, an initiative for the deradicalisation and rehabilitation of all former Boko Haram members was launched.

However, soldiers, who confirmed the release of the suspects said they did not understand why suspected Boko Haram members are being released in large numbers.

“A lot of soldiers are not happy about this. We were there at the Maimalari barracks when some of these Boko Haram people were released,” one of the soldiers said.

“The authorities are releasing them, but Boko Haram elements are killing soldiers that they capture. This does not make sense to us at all. We continue to sweep across the bushes to flush these people out, and then the government will release them. Does that not amount to wasted efforts?”

Speaking on the issue in a chat with Daily Independent, Sagay said while the idea of deradicalisation of the Boko Haram members is a good idea, he is not sure the Nigerian Army is implementing it correctly as it is not easy to tell if the Boko Haram members are genuinely repentant and won’t go back to their former ways.

“I think the idea is to deradicalise them and change their orientation after which they could use them for information purposes and then turn into useful citizens”.

“While it is not a bad idea, the implementation could be dangerous because if you now release people who have not really changed at heart, it could then become a danger to the society”.

“It happens. In Britain now, somebody was in prison for a very short time and then released prematurely. He went about committing terrorist acts in the streets until he was shot. So, that is the issue”.

“To what extent have you deradicalised and totally reoriented these repentant Boko Haram members to make them committed to a democratic society that is free from danger? It is a difficult thing. The idea is okay but I am not sure they are implementing it correctly. That is my fear” he said.

Releasing Boko Haram members to the public and yet Sowore,Bakare, Ibrahim El zakzaky that did nothing wrong could spend their whole life in jail or be executed for treason charges.
May ALLAH Safeguard us and our family from the hands of Tyrants.

Are you sure this is coming from Sagay?

In Bubu voice: I don't know the type of technology they used to record Sagay's voice on this interview... grin

Hear me , the earlier you understand that this present government doesn't mean well for Nigeria and Nigerians the better.

I believe by now you should be ashamed of yourself.

One by one they are backing out.
Sarrki has took the brave steps but we are still waiting for .

But I see as a sociopath. He can never repent!

No. since they're Northerners it is not dangerous. But on a serious note, These people are the real enemies of the state. Compare the rate of atrocities committed by these people and that of Sowore and Kanu still the Federal government illegally detained them and now they don't even charge the Boko Haram guys to court. Power is more important than lives of innocent Nigerians to this Gov't.

It is too early to release them when we have not totally won the war. Their atrocities can t just be wished away ,just like that. Yea ,we know that amnesty can hasten peace and healing but not when these guys have not helped us find Leah Sharibu and others they have kidnapped. Even if they have helped the Nigerian military with invaluable intelligence which might have shown their being remorseful, it is too early to give them freedom while our soldiers and communities are still in bondage unleashed on us accumulatively by the wicked and unpatriotic PDP past administrations.

bros the thing tire me oooo. it insults our sensibilities and may make some victims and their families to no longer cooperate with the healing process especially if they were never part of this questionable amnesty.

Yessoo. It's sad. I lost my darling in-law to the war.

The exercise is international best practice elsewhere, but in Nigeria, it's a tool against some other people.

BH can never end because those who claim to be fighting them share some sentiments with them.

A soldier who was at war front told me that the war will never end because northerners share adeep sentiments with them, which is religion and tribe.

He said they could get Intel that some folks in town were hiding bh in their house, when soldiers storm the place and begin to scatter ground in their usual manner, their hausa soldier colleagues would warn them to treat the accused gently because they are his people.
My guy said you stand the risk of being gunned down by your hausa mooslim colleague, if he thinks you are killing too many BH guys at the war front.

This story is a true story from one who was there and deserted.

My guy...

Before I went for NYSC, I worked for a cottagd company that produced herbal tea. They became well known in their locality, so fraudsters began faking the product and dropping our name everywhere they went to sell their fake.

So we had to send out words to all our key clients that those people were not part of us and should be disregarded.

During that period, my boss was going on air to market the product, so it was suggested that he should also issue a disclaimer on air about those fraudsters, so that a larger audience could be wary of them.

My boss refused!

His reasons? If he went on air, paid with his hard earned money, and ended up giving a nonentity, a slowpoke, a hustler, someone without any recorded success media attention, No! He said that would be an undeserved publicity!! To mention the slowpoke on air for whatever reason was a disservice to our own reputation.

I was young and I was confused. But today, looking back, I know better.

I hope you know what I'm driving at. I will say no more.

The soldiers should stage a coup. In the history of Nigeria it has never been as bad as this. We warned you idiots not to vote terrorist into power. This is the result.
God punish you fools...especially those who supported this calamity to come into power the 2nd time.
