Hello Nairalanders, I will be traveling to the Southern part of the Country for the first time in my life. I was born and raised in the North Central, Plateau state to be precise.

I will be traveling to Aba to buy some goods for a Client, initially I was planning to move to Port-Harcourt, then from there enter Aba and Onitsha after I'm done with shopping I will move back to Port-Harcourt and take a Bus back home.

Now the issue here is I have never travelled to the South, a lot of people here are telling me that there's no security, even lodging is not safe because EFCC might raid the lodge anytime. And the Streets are also not safe.

Pls Nairalanders in port and Aba should recommend a good and safe area for me. I was told keke and bus drivers don't usually speak English na so so language dem dey speak.

Help a brother pls.

See person wer Boko Haram be ur neighbor dey talk of security...

The south is the best place to live in Nigeria and by extension the south east

Well.... Be careful

You will be tagged onye ugwu!!

Be careful... Be very very careful...

Aba is the capital of Biafrans...

The biafra proponents especially masobs are very deadly especially towards Northerners...

They don't care weather you are from Jos,Nasarawa or Niger... What they know is that onye ugwu bu onye ugwu... (a northerner is a northerner) and they see you as an enemy

I have been to Aba,Onitsha, Enugu and Ebonyi...

Ebonyi and Aba na danger for Northerners...

Those Niger migrants hustling over there dey hear ram hot cos they see them as Hausafulani

Don't think that you coming from Jos will save you... You are a brother to yakubu Gowon Just have that in mind

Lastly when Making call in public don't use Hausa to speak with any of your friends... They might tag you a Bokoharam informant and you're likely to be lynched or ipob among them will tag you Hausafulani spy
So many little children on this forum! There should be age restriction on this forum!

Don't be carried away by what you read online

My own concern is you going to the market alone.. You need a guide who will assist you.
Even if your stranded approach any level headed igbo man he will be willing to help you irrespective of where your from.

And like the dude that provided his number to you, he is willing to help you.
Don't be afraid, There are good people Der.

Also don't near water lines, rumuola, obgunabali, mothercat at nights.... I don talk my own finish o.
You can easily get a bus coming to the north from aba than ph.........u might even meet ur fellow aboki there cos those guys with shops in abuja market in jos(amadu Bello way) always come to aba.

No cause for Alarm....When u get safely to Phcity Lodge somewhere around waterlines...U can always get a safe hotel or guesthouse there...Then first thing the next morning u can join a bus from aba road straight to Aba...Port Harcourt to Aba is less than an Hour.
Note:
While in PH city,
Don't go about using any how Slangs.
Don't Keep Wild Night Life .
Don't go to Diobu especially Azikiwe street.
Don't visit tourist attractions Like Mr.Sweet or Casablanca.
Don't go to Town.
And most importantly go about affiliating with people u don't know from Adam.
And try and Avoid doing Drugs or Crime until u get back to Plateau State.
U can Thank me Later.

From Gada Biu enter bus to Onitsha straight. Don't tell them you're going to Aba. When you get to Onitsha, you can now get a vehicle to Aba.

Aba is safe but remember that security begins with you. Speak your English/Pidgin, they understand very well. Also you'll get more info from your fellow passengers if you talk to them.

We'll be careful. My In-law shuttles from Kano to Aba to buy stuff for his business. He says he keeps his head down and speaks only English and pidgin and keeps speaking Hausa to a minimum due to some natives over there looking at him suspiciously and a few times have tried been aggressive with him when they learnt he speaks Hausa. Based on his experience. Just get there , do your business and get out asap.
The civil war experience that lingers till date, is the reason the Igbos don't want to see your arses around their communities!

am in aba, first of all you don't from aba to pH to enter bus traveling your way rather from ph people enter aba to enter bus to anywhere, aba is safe and onitsha too

Welcome to my city

People from PH to Aba to enter bus.... chisos chisos, nothing I no go see... lie small small naaa...

OP if you can live in the north without wahala, then you can as well in the south. I know as a northerner you may be looked at as an enemy especially in Aba or any other SE city or state, but PH is too cosmopolitan for that.
Language will never be a barrier for you in PH as long as you can speak pidgin english or correct english. In Aba at first they'll use Ibo to communicate with you, but once they know that you dont understand they'll switch(sometimes they will still use Ibo unknowingly), however they've already marked you as an outsider.
For cities that you've never been to, I'll say stay close to your own(other northerners) and avoid unnecessary night movement. PH and Aba are safe especially during the day.

It's your country so feel free to explore, but be careful. Dont listen to anyone telling you onitsha. How can you be going to Aba and be lodging in faraway onitsha?
The guy is exploring his country and dont wanna move from one ibo town to another Ibo town.
Re: Travelling To The South For The First Time by manneger2: 3:21pm On Feb 15, 2020
This happen to me also, the first time I went to Kano I was so scared, I can understand but Onitsha is ok, pH is not secure atal, don't keep late night, but seriously though Nigeria is not secure atal, u can be moving around with huge sum of money in Dubai at night without being afraid of someone taking ur money.

What a ridiculous comment. Lol
You see my good friend, some westerns still think that blacks can't read or communicate in English ( hence Universities will always ask you to do one foreign English test or the other). Main reason is because of these unguarded comments from one of us.....I suppose. You may wish to know that blacks from Nigeria still gain admission and top the dean's list.
Some of those guys you are insulting are retired civil servants that can communicate more effectively than you bro! They can ALL speak pidgin English at least. Must they speak Queens English to take you to Kent, Nsulu, ahia ohuru or Ariara market?
Aba is a hospitable city......just like the west have painted Africa black, don't give Aba a bad name.
What's your knowledge of Aba if I may ask?
As an indigin or what

60% of Igbo's can speak Hausa fluently.

Don't be scared, Aba is safe as heaven, even at Night.

Northern Nigeria and Eastern Nigeria faultlines is primarily and basically religion and not tribe.

North will welcome Igbo Muslims while the East favours Northern Christians but in business, money is the language and basically customers are good friends to keep.

You are a customer in Aba and will be treated well for the sake of next time

Everything you are worried about is exactly what someone travelling from South to North should be worried about, not the other way round...

Someone from North is even concerned about language barrier... Lol... What a joke!!!

Guy, travel your travel, and enjoy yourself!!! I have lived in almost every part of this blessed nation... South is far safer than the North. grin

Just keep your wallet well hidden, mind where you enter, and be careful.

You are just starting business that's why you are just asking this question.

Aba is safer to foreigners than even the indegine, they value business more than anything, once you are there for business no problem for you.

There are people from Camerons Ghanains and other West African countries, doing business there.

- Have money on your account pay with pos unless you trust the shop.
- Get a contact person, so that you won't have to travel, whatever you want can be waybilled to you.
- Hotel is relatively cheap.

aba is not south.... to an extent south east, please your best bet it's to use your decent sense, mingle with hausas more and only relate to trusted persons....... You can come down to onithsa then take a bus to aba via peace mass or you go directly to aba. the luxury park at gada biu handles both routes. abeg delete all bank statements from phone, and two better blend well

Honestly, all southern states are peaceful but its only applicable when you maintain orderliness.

In South East & South South, don't argue too much and don't flex muscles with them ( Intimidate anyone).

Don't discuss politics with them ( many don't like buhari)

Make friends as many as possible and don't hate anyone.

Don't stay out late at night

No where is safe in the South East. I was there a couple of times before. The people in that region don't even trust themselves. I rather leave in Borno than to stay in any part of the East.
