Clashy:I think what your referring to is a leopard which hoists it prey into trees as well as hunts animal preys on trees. Yoruba don’t know about Jaguar since it’s not that popular of an animal and also not native to any area in Africa wheareas the leopard is. 3 Likes 1 Share |

sammyfrosh: Nice work op. But there are many errors and misinformation in your write up. Here is just a few of the errors in your write up. 1) The following are not found in Africa, so they couldn't have Yoruba or any indigenous African names ? Tiger - South East Asia, Alligator - The Americas only, Pelican - NorthPole only. 2) Wrong names for wrong animals. i) Owawa is bushbaby also called galago not cheetah . As a matter of fact, Cheetah is indigenous to only East Africa, if found elsewhere then its in captivity. ii) Ahonriwon/Anta is also the local name for monitor lizard (not alligator) in some parts of Yorubaland. iii) Amotekun/Ekun is the name for leopard. (J.F Odunjo couldn't be wrong on this). Below is picture of a bushbaby/galago. 4 Likes 2 Shares

cosmos1440:Yea have been more enlightened now about some wrong infos on the lists than when I first created the thread since 2018 but I am still certain that owawa is a name for the cheetah and It was once widespread throughout the Sub Saharan Africa until recent times when they were extirpated from most of their former ranges but some fractions still exists in the North and ventures from Sudan to Northern Nigeria. As far as the tiger is concerned, tho it’s true that it doesn’t occur in Africa but am very sure it was well known to the yorubas during the olden days because the horses which is called esin was also not a native to the African region but was well known throughout the sub Saharan Africa. Also bush baby or galapago is called Egbere not owawa due to the noises it makes which sounds like a wailing baby and there’s also another animal called ofafa in Yoruba which is hyrax in English and it barks like dog at night. But I agree with you about the alligator tho. 2 Likes 1 Share |

gregyboy: I'm not disputing that fact, but you guys saying you taught us the language you do not speak %100 is quite insulting. P.s lol @Mecca, is this your idea of being funny what relation does the Yoruba have with the Arabic language. 2 Likes 1 Share |

sammyfrosh:You're wrong about the 'horse' naming. If you know about the history of Oyo empire, you'll know there have been contact in the past with the Hausa/Fulani. The empire's army has a calvary, so they might have engage in some sought of trade to get them hence the naming. 1 Like |
